I think they'd be great for making this game feel less anonymous at times, as long as they're strictly optional. Anyone else agree?

NO! NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!
Defeats the entire premise of the UI in this game. Specifically designed so that you AREN'T encountering nameplates and flying text 24/7, so you focus on the game itself.

Sadly the 'immersionists' whined nameplates broke their 'immersion' so ZOS decided not to even offer the OPTION.
Of course those same immersionists are now among those screaming about bots .. with the huge irony that the lack of nameplates makes reporting them a LOT more tedious so many players don't bother.

Lack of nameplates is not the biggest problem when it comes to bots. I´m sure you are aware of that.

No. It will have no impact whatsoever on server performance. It's actually far less stressful on the server to render one nameplate than it is to render the graphics for a piece of gear. In fact, it's no harder than rendering the text on a tooltip, since that's essentially what it is - a persistent tooltip over a character with text and a perfectly transparent background.
Please don't say things like this unless you know what you're talking about, or gullible people might actually believe this misinformation.

Then...why mention it? Are you saying only the biggest "problem" should be addressed, and nothing else? Should development on the game stop until whatever is deemed the biggest problem is fixed?

No, that´s not what I am saying.
Can I help you with anything else?

Not if the help is as confusing and seemingly pointless as whatever you "were" trying to say.
I think it would be cool if they made guild members kind of like how you see characters in the world if they are in your group. You can see them on the mini-map and they have that "V" looking icon.
That way you could still notice guild members without the long obtrusive name and guild tags like most MMO's.
It could become obnoxious if it showed all 5 guilds like that, but you could probably make a toggle flag to turn guilds on and off at will.

Do you want your name to be visible to other players as a name plate above your character?

Why the 2nd option. It's not like they can't already focus on you and get your name.

It would make a lot of griefers, gold farmers, botters and exploiters very happy, though. So there's that I guess.
I wouldn't object to the no-tag-for-me option, but I would object to any kind of true anonymity.

Opinions never make good arguments and the fact is both sides of this are opinions. Therefore neither side has a really good argument, but Compromise can be mad so both sides are content. Like was stated earlier just give the option to show name plates, and the option for your name plate to not show up.Im always amazed at the bad ideas people make who run multi million dollar buisnesses.
This no option to display nameplates while not a huge deal is still probably one of the dumbest ideas ive seen devs implement in an mmo. Unless it was causing the game to crash or massive server lag for everyone I cant imagine a good argument for this bad idea.
