Skills like fatecarver only do damage while they are being channeled, so they are direct damage. They are also area damage as versus single target, but that is a different distinction.
They are also necro passive pairs well with dragonknight, several guild and weapon abilities, and sets such as Deadly Strikes (which increases DoT as well as channeled damage), Elf Bane (increases the duration of flame DoTs by 5 seconds).

Abilities that are traditionally referred to as “beams” have all been updated to now be considered Direct Damage, rather than Damage over Time. This affects the following abilities;
Radiant Destruction and morphs
Fatecarver and morphs
Soul Strike and morphs
Vampiric Drain and morphs

It’s true that necro is not useful for a lot, mostly that passive and if you need a group revive. It would be nice if necros could summon actual skeletal warriors and bone goliaths like NPC necros do, even a pit of skeletal hands like the final boss of Elden Hollow I. But at least with subclassing, my necros aren’t stuck being only crafters any more!
There doesn’t seem to be as many sources or sets that increase ice/frost damage over time, are there? That would be a nice pairing color-theme wise and one of necro’s few DoTs does frost damage.
