Why is the screen resolution option locked and set so low?

Why is the Resolution setting disabled? Everything in the game is low res for me instead of the usual 3840x2160 resolution it had been before the update?

Have you done the usual turn off any addons (especially those that may directly affect in-game graphics)?

I opened the PTS as the Resolution option is locked there as well but at least it is set to 3840x2160 which is my current screen resolution. I'm not sure why the live server is behaving differently.

@LonePirate Could you try disabling HDR and see if that allows you to adjust the resolution, as a start?

It makes no difference as it behaves the same when HDR is on or off. The option is still disabled and I cannot change it. It is still set to the low resolution. The PTS is working fine for me this morning as it correctly uses my 4K resolution setting.

Could you try closing and restarting the game after disabling HDR and see if that helps?

No change in the behavior after disabling the HDR option, closing the game entirely and relaunching it. Again, the PTS is working fine here this morning.

Huh, ok. Would you mind passing along your UserSettings files for both PTS and Live? You can post them here or send over in a DM if you'd prefer.

I don't see a UserSettings file in my ESO directories. There is an AppSettings file in the Client directory that's from May 12. There is an AppSettingsConfig.json file in the Game directory from this morning when I performed the update.

I'm not sure that is necessary any longer. I ran the /reloadui command and the Display Mode setting in the game switched over to Fullscreen (Windowed) and the Resolution option was active. I changed it to the 3840x2160 option and it saved, even with the HDR setting being On. Things are fine now. The Resolution option is locked again now that I changed it back to regular Fullscreen; but otherwise everything looks how it should.

ETA: Thanks to Maitsukas, here are the files but now that everything is back to where it should be, there's probably not much info to be gained.

The UserSettings.txt files can be found under Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live/PTS.

@LonePirate glad to hear the issue resolved itself! The team would love to get some more information so we can track down what happened, though. If you have time, would you mind sending over your DxDiag? You can find instructions here: https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/#en/answer/25236

Hi, I just wanted to report that I have the same issue and @LonePirate's method of resolving the issue didn't fix it for me. I am using a 9070 XT running the game with HDR. Monitor resolution is 1440p but before yesterday's patch removed my ability to change resolution I would up the ingame resolution to 2160p (using Virtual Super Resolution).

Same issue for me, game resolution stuck at a low resolution and no way to change it. As the option is greyed out. (have also posted this in the u46 sticky in the bug forrum.)

PS: Using windowed fullscreen, normally playing at 4k resolution.

Same for me, using HDR option freezes the resolution to 2k, while before u46 I was playing on 4k.

this happened to me as well; i'm now halfway through re-downloading the game after uninstalling it before i found this thread...

i did notice that the resolution settings in usersettings.txt were being ignored and overwritten every launch. i tried manually setting it, as well as letting Nvidia's app set it, but i always ended up with something bizarre replacing the 4k resolution i was trying to set: 1536x864 fullscreen, 1536x841 windowed. this would happen even if i set the file to read-only.

in-game, my resolution always appeared as an unselectable blank line rather than any actual numbers, regardless of windowed, windowed fullscreen, or fullscreen being selected.

as someone else said, i was using the HDR mode. i remember that toggling it off didn't have an immediate effect in the character select, and i can't test further since it'll be a few hours before this bloated monstrosity of an install is finished.

the monitor i'm playing on now is a different resolution than the one i had last time i launched the game back in 2024, but it'd be pretty crazy if that mattered. figured i'd mention it though.

Ah yeah I can confirm the restriction only happens when HDR is turned on.

yup, now that the game's downloaded again i can confirm for me as well, turning off HDR and then relaunching the game fixed this behavior. i went ahead and turned HDR back on and relaunched it again, and it seems to have stuck with the 4k resolution i'd set it at earlier, so for now this seems like an effective workaround.

The game does not even show the HDR setting for me. So I can't fix it that way.
Also tried the /reloadui to see if that allowed me to change the resolution, but that does not work either.

Will this be fixed in a next patch?

My in-game graphic settings, as you can see the option to change my resolution is greyed out:

Is this ever going to be fixed? My game was running fine, but then I formatted my pc today, suddenly I'm stuck at 1440p and can't change the resolution at all. I usually play at 4k no problem, and 1440p doesn't look great on a 43 inch screen. Using an AMD 7900xtx.

I remember this happening to me once, long ago. I think the game gets confused as to whether it is Full screen or windowed and applies the windowed resolution while in fullscreen mode and then lock it.

I recall having to dance between screen modes and several restarts to get it back to normal. Maybe try hitting alt+enter to toggle Fullscreen and Windowed mode and see if that unlocks the resolution.

Unfortunately this doesn't work - and its an issue specific to HDR.

It's annoying and makes me not want to play the game at all.
