Subclass - Why Three

I am trying to understand why subclassing makes you lock in three lines. It is all rather confusing because as far as I can tell the max skill sub-lines you can level at a time is two - since the lines have to be swapped and you need an ability from that line on your action bar. I have not seen the selected subclass lines gain XP if not equipped so just curious as to this odd cap of three? Was this to prevent players from experimenting and bouncing from line to line to line before finishing? If they pay the attribute respec fee why would it matter?

Overall this choice seems to have made the experience and interface overly convoluted - at least on console. I don’t understand the need for an entire extra subclass menu. Why not just have a button prompt under your normal skill lines that says “X to swap” then offer up the list of skill lines to swap for. It seems inconsistent with how you do this normally and has a least three casual friends grow so frustrated trying to understand they messed up their choice and walked away. The sub class menu is really just a place to view your global progress so why not have this under collections as it takes up unnecessary space in the main skill menu.

I have not tried to swap outside using the quest npc.
You can swap out two skills with two other skills who has to be from two difrent classes.
Then I leveled up I only used one skill who I then had to swap out for another.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Exactly I understand the two and how it works. I am curious why there are these new “points” system having you to select 3 sub-class lines when you can only ever level two at a time. I could find no reference to why this exists. Originally I assumed the three classes would just level up gradually from gained XP regardless of you having the ability equipped or not but this is not the case so perplexing by the game and quests obsession with locking me into three lines at a time.

Many players have multiple alts who can all subclass different lines. I think goal of restriction is to avoid having 10 characters, each subclassing different skill lines, and thus letting you level up 20 skill lines at once. At any time, you can only have 3 skill lines less than Level 50 across all characters on account. So the 3 is just to mirror number of skill lines each class has but restriction is based around entire account, not single character.

I have many alts. At least one character for every class and then some. The cap of three is not global as my Alts are all focused on different sub class lines from one another. Each had to commit to 3 sub-lines but each alt can choose wildly different so it is not locking me to only work three lines at a time globally. Like the three cap in general, what would be the point of that? Especially considering that an alt sorc will want to maybe commit to learning a necrotic line while that line is pointless for my necro that already knows it.

I didn't have to lock in 3 subclassing lines. I actually only unlocked and leveled one at first. If I'm understanding correctly.

They coupd probably make further adjustments to the initial UI and tutorial, but I do think you should only be able to switch subclasses at a respec shrine.

If you have level 50 alts where you maxed out the class skill lines before there is no lock in anymore. You can also switch skill lines as much if you want even if they are below 50.

I levelled like 10 skill lines at once with my alts each profiting of the battleground and daily dungeon XP bonus + scroll. I levelled all the skill lines in 2 weeks.

If you have alts like that, just login with them once and you will get the 'Upgrade: Skill line unlocked' for all of their class skill lines.
