The quest Forgotten Soul in Root Sunder Ruins, Grahtwood

As a Khajiit I have never liked this public dungeon since it's filled with lovely cats. This one have made sure that each character have completed the quest Forgotten Souls so the lovely kittens turn yellow and this one not forced to kill them.

Unfortunately I have discovered that they are now turned back into red mobs, this one does not want to fight his fellow kittens...
This one hopes it's a woopsie and will be fixed in the next update.

Unfortunately this one can not simply not go there since Bolgrul keeps sending me there.

Or is this one the only one with this problem?

I can’t say for sure, since I did that quest a long time ago, but I think that maybe the mobs in the area were only non-hostile immediately after the quest is completed so you may leave unharmed. Once you leave they seem to revert to hostile again.

Like you, on my Khajiit main I try to avoid fighting my cousins if I can, so I can understand. There are only a few places where I can think of that post-quest the mobs stay non-hostile and that is Nilata Ruins in Bangkorai and near Willowgrove Cavern in Reapers March, but those are areas outside.

There's also the Furykissed near Kynesgrove (Eastmarch). They'll still turn hostile if you accidentally attack them, though.

I did re-check two other NPC groups that I could think of that would be non-hostile to me in the same was as the kittens in the Root Sunder Ruins.

The ghosts in the Starved Plain was still yellow
The NPCs at Kynesgrove is still yellow

I re-checked Root Sunder Ruins and they where still hostiles.

Can anyone else here check and see if the mobs in Root Sunder Ruins is hostile towards you even if you know that they should be yellow?

I just did the two quests in the Root Sunder Ruins (Forgotten Soul and If the Dead Could Talk).
After I completed the Forgotten Soul the mobs where non hostile to me.
I then exited the dungeon to complete the quest If the Dead Could Talk and then went straight back in, the mobs where now hostile again.

    This have never happen before..

The question is, is this a bug or a feature?

It has been like this for me for years, nothing new. Since this is inside an instanced area, I don’t think there is any way to keep them non-hostile.

That is my understanding as well from when this was brought up last year: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/663084/root-sunder-ruins-monsters-hostile-instead-of-neutral

I am unaware of any official acknowledgment or intention to fix it.

Wow, I totally don’t remember reading that thread. It has been many years since I did the Mage’s Guild daily, which sends you there for the Big Brother Little Sister relic I think, and they have always been hostile. I am not sure why it would be intended to make the entire public dungeon non-hostile for future visits. What would be the point of going there at all?

Well I know to 100% that the mobs have been yellow to me and the alts this spring when re-entering since I have now done allllll the Fighters Guild, Mage Guild and Undaunted dailies for ... 7 characters now.
And this is to get every Focus, Signature and Affix script.

    Math time.
It's the Mage guild who gives us the quests to look for Mad gods items in public dungeons and there is 21 Focus scripts and 4 of them are free so it's just 17 left.
There are 15 Public Dungeons that we can be sent to so that gives us an 6.67% chance (per day) of getting sent to the Root Sunder Ruins.
So I have now then spent days on doing this on 7 chars, 17 x 7 = 4 months.
I know that I have been there several times during this grind and while doing this and each of those times I have entered the mobs have been yellow on those chars that have done the two related quests beforehand.

So, it appears that this is a random feature that kicks in now and then...

And this will also never be fixed since I'm not sure what version it's considered broken.

    1. Is the intention that the mobs will be non hostile only after you have done the Forgotten Soul and then turn hostile again when you re-enter the dungen again?

    2. Or is the intention that the mobs should continue be non hostile even after you re-enter the dungeon after you have done Forgotten Soul and be so forever and ever?

Unfortunately I think that nr 1 is the intended way this should work... but I liked it very much when it was like nr 2.

May I be so bold to ask mr @ZOS_Kevin what the intention is regarding the Forgotten Souls quest, should the mobs be non hostile forever or just until you leave the dungeon?

I see why it would make sense to make inhabitants of a public dungeon hostile, as that’s a hallmark of PDs.

But if they’re always meant to be hostile, why make them all non-hostile after the PD quest until the next time you enter? That sets players up to be confused. Where else does merely exiting and reentering change the hostility of all mobs present? (Genuine question - I’d love to know if there are other examples.)

And UESP’s note suggests it was not always this way, which would mean it either was bugged for a very long time or is currently bugged. Undocumented changes by nature raise suspicions of a bug for a good reason.
