Is it possible to Block all Whispers in game?

Is it possible to block all whispers in game so if someone tries to whisper it isn't even sent? Or is blocking a player individually the only way to stop whispers?

The only way I know of is to switch your account to "offline" mode.

You could also uncheck whispers from your chat tab in the chat tab settings. Sure, it’ll send but I think ignoring a sent whisper is an even bigger power move.

So if a player is in offline mode and someone tries to send them a message the sender doesn't see it being sent?

So if a player is in offline mode and someone tries to send them a message the sender doesn't see it being sent?

Yes. If someone’s in offline mode the message doesn’t send, no feedback. If they’re blocked or actually offline I think that’s the only times it says can’t find player.

So if a player is in offline mode and someone tries to send them a message the sender doesn't see it being sent?

I think so. I think it will say "account not found" or something like that.

The downside is that it applies to everyone-- friends, guild members, and strangers. On your friends' Friends list your account name will be grayed out as though you are not logged in, and it will say that you were last online however many hours, days, or months it's been since you put yourself in "offline" status. Same with guild rosters. If you're a member of any guilds that kick players who've been inactive for a certain period of time, you might want to put your status back to "online" every so often so your guilds know you're still an active player.

This is the situation that prompted me to ask this question.

I was in town and saw a player with an outfit that I loved. I whispered them to ask what the chest piece was they were using but I didn't see my message in the chat window. I didn't get a message about not being able to find the player like if they had logged off, or any other message, nor did they reply.

I would think maybe this player had me on ignore but it was someone I had never seen before or interacted with so that seemed unlikely.

That made me wonder if there was some type of way to just block all incoming whispers.

It’s one of a few options as to what could’ve happened:
    - They were AFK
    - Their chat was scrolled up and they didn’t see it
    - They ignored it
    - They’re set to offline

If they had you blocked it would say account not found I believe.

It seems they probably were in offline mode since the message didn't send and there was no feedback.

    Thanks for the replies!

I have three accounts and about to add a fourth and there are certain folks I put on Mute when I start a new account...that could be what's happening here... also check and see if you are using the old Mute addon...it can do some crazy things to your incoming tells and /Zone chat and should be deleted.

I would consider that but I had never seen or interacted with this player before. I don't know why they would mute me when we had never had any interactions at all, let alone a negative one.

You can figure out, if you try to mail him.
If someone is in offline modus, you still can send him a mail. If someone got you on ignore, it will say "you can't sent a message to player X" (or similar).

I think a lot of PvP players like to put themselves in offline mode to avoid getting hate whispers from other PvP players. That doesn't mean the player in your case was a PvP player, but avoiding any random hate whispers seems to be one of the most common reasons why players go into offline mode.

I don't remember their name now, and it was a long one. If it ever happens again I will try the mail thing.

... on that account. As Warhawke suggested, it's possible that the interaction happened elsewhere.

Most likely by far is the player was simply offline. I know several people that set themselves offline for writs as a courtesy while they cycle through alts.

They could also be on a Chat Tab that has "Tell" turned off, so if they are on that tab they will not see a whisper.

I'm one of those people. I always set myself to offline for collecting my hireling mails, doing writs, or anything else where I'm going to be doing a ton of relogging. I just don't want to spam people on my friends list with
"Ur-Quan has logged off with Caius Drusus"
"Ur-Quan has logged on with Bragg Ironhand"
    ad nauseum
So if I ever don't reply to a whisper, it's not because I have you blocked (the only people I have blocked are the bots and gold sellers I've reported, because they get auto-blocked), it's because I set myself to offline so that I don't spam my friends!

I don't go around whispering strangers. I could count on one hand how many times I have, to ask about their outfit like today for instance.

I only speak occasionally in zone chat, usually to answer a question or offer help when someone is asking. I don't often speak in guild chat either. I am pretty quiet in game and mostly just chat with people on my friend's list.

So I don't know why anyone would feel the need to just randomly block me.

I don’t know about PC, but on PS a lot of players just don’t have the text chat window open. We can’t filter on them and we get all texts in the same window, including zone text chat and some people don’t want to see that.

That's what happened. No whisper sent and no feedback. That's what makes it more confusing. I didn't even know who this player was and had never interacted with them before, so why would I be blocked by them?

As I stated earlier I'm pretty quiet in game and not running around whispering strangers so I don't get it.

I block players that I have bad experiences with in dungeons and such, you don't have to really say anything. Addons let me see the notes next time I get grouped with them so I know what I am in for and if I want to bother. IE: Fake tank, bad dps, no taunt. Healer that runs ahead and pulls everything causing a cluster muck, etc. That is the only reason I could think of, unless you bothered them and just don't remember.

This isn't correct for the offline mode in my experience; a friend of mine frequently sets himself in offline mode so as not to be disturbed and then sometimes forgets having done so and whispers me. When this happens, when I try whispering back, there is no feedback at all, the message just disappears completely.

When whispering someone who's offline you do get an error message. However the feedback doesn't appear in the chat window. It pops as a message at the top right corner of the screen. Same place as messages telling you someone has left guild, etc..

I think some people put themselves in offline and forget. One of my friends whispered to me, wanting to know what I was doing, but when I tried to whisper back it was as you experienced-- not sent, and no feedback, just nothing. I sent them a quick mail saying they must be offline as I couldn't whisper to them, then I saw "so-and-so has logged in" pop up, and I was able to whisper to them.

This is likely what happened IMO:

They logged out of the game by turning off their console without shutting down the game. When you do that, your character is left standing around where you left them when you turned off your console (or I guess PC). You can persist there for quite some time. Any attempts to interact with the character will fail because you are technically offline, but your character is still showing in the game as if you were there.

I've actually seen times in Cyrodil where a guy's character persisted in the same spot for over an hour after the guy got offline before it disappeared. It was really amusing because he was right at the edge of a lake in a combat zone, so we all teased him that he snuck away to do some fishing during ball group night :D
