Should Skill Styles change the creature of Pet and Transformation abilities?

Many have long asked for pet abilities (such as Feral Guardian and Summon Winged Twilight) and transformation abilities (such as Werewolf Transformation and Blood Scion) to have the option of using a different creature. For instance, common requests include the option to summon a wolf or senche with Feral Guardian, the option to turn Summon Winged Twilight into something much smaller like a nixad, the option to turn into a werebear with Werewolf Transformation, and the option to turn into a Vampire Lord instead of a Blood Scion.

Though, some others have objected to the idea, saying that such Skill Styles would cause more issues than they're worth. One primary issue is that animation and SFX may not line up when trying to match the new creature's attacks to the old creature's attacks. Since Skill Styles are purely cosmetic, they are limited by what the ability itself does — at what point is the creature swap better served being a completely new skill?

What do you think? Should Skill Styles change the creature of these abilities?

Overall yes, tired of seeing flying matriarch for Sorc and new skin for the Scamp would be nice.

i would love to see more combat pets.
But i think it would be odd to see a Harpy or Nixad with the Twilight Matriarch nametag.

i would rather we get Combat Pet Grimoires.
and have Skill Styles continue to only change the colours and/or effects of a skill.

    edited to add:
    Werebear aren't in ESO yet.
They'd therefore probably also have different animations and use another skeleton than Werewolf.
so seems better suited for either
    - a Lycanthropy Grimoire Ultimate.
    - another Skill line.
would love to see them get added though.

There's also Werebats, but i doubt ZOS would let us fly like them.

Blood Scion would probably be fine as a Skill Style as the only difference seems to be no wings.

I don't use Werewolf or Vamp line, so I don't feel I have a say.

As a Warden, I would love to have something besides a bear which gets caught in the scenery half the time and is relatively useless in battle. Why not a senche of some type? (oh yes, please!!!) Or a wolf?

As a sorceress, I find the scamp and the matriarch both ugly. Even a cosmetic boost would help them, though I know they're technically Daedric creatures and all that.

I think the base creature should always remain the same, but there are some minor alterations which I think are acceptable:
    • Texture swaps (like Feral Guardian, Slate-Gray and the upcoming Feral Guardian, Snow Bear skill style)
    • VFX changes (like the transparent glowing red of Summon Winged Twilight, Warrior)
    • Model swaps that retain the same animations (like those Blood Scion enemies who wear extra armor while transformed, or those Skeletal Werewolf enemies who still use the basic Werewolf animations)

I wouldn't mind such Skill Styles per se, but that's my main reason for choosing 'Other'. Considering ZOS would have to spend time creating matching animations for the attacks of the new creatures, I'd prefer it if they would actually create new morphs (or maybe a Scribing skill) with different creatures and effects instead.

Yes, Skill Styles should change the creature of Pet and Transformation abilities
For the most part: yes. Go nuts with Skill Styles. That's a great way to add customization, and is a perfect place for them to monetize as well.

I think there are two classes of Pets in ESO: those that are essentially spawned extra characters with AI (like the Sorc permanent pets or things like the Maw proc), and those that are essentially skill VFX (like the Warden birds or shalks). Because of the way the game works - and makes some AI pets targetable, it'll be a lot harder to do a full model swap for the AI ones than the others.

I know people hate the Sorc flappy, but changing her model too much will lead to a lot of "P2W" complaints in PvP. She would need to still use the same skeleton and size, so there's not too much that can be done with her beyond standard recolors. They might be able to model swap with something that uses the same skeleton (I think the Giant Bat mobs use a similar skeleton that could work out), but it will probably not be possible to swap her into something totally different like a nixad... which also means the "please make her smaller!" argument is pretty well out.

As for the other type, you have a lot more flexibility since those are more spell effects than anything else. I could totally see a Warden skill style that swaps the shalks into like moles or something, and I'd totally buy a Cliff Racer style that changed them into birds of prey like eagles or hawks. That seems totally possible.

As for things like the Werewolf - colors are a given (and the three default colors should 100% be in and free). Model swaps there... again, you'd pretty well be constrained by the skeleton and animations. Still, I do think that changing the beast slightly would work, and we have a few good ones. The werebats from ESO wouldn't - they're renamed Giant Bats in the first place. But I could totally see werebears working fine, and I could even argue wereboars. Those two specifically I'd also love to see since those were the two major non-wolf wereforms we've seen in the TES series - wereboars in Daggerfall (they were playable and technically stronger than wolves), and werebears in Skyrim's Dragonborn DLC (where they weren't playable without a mod, but there were quests involving them). Those should absolutely be paid (and give me my bear and I will pay whatever for it).

Yes, I can already hear people going "but bears don't pounce!" My response: shut up, I don't care. There are plenty of claw swipes in the werewolf kit that it'd end up looking fine overall. It would require ZOS to make a new model for those two forms though, so I could totally see a werebear/wereboar as a 'premium' Skill Style with a premium price. Heck, I'd even be okay if they still howled (but if they did also change the sounds as well, it'd be worth even more...)

My secondary is a werewolf in game, but in his lore he's a werebear. I would kill to get a brown werebear style for his transformation. Seriously, if ZOS ever gave that to me, even if all it was was a bear-shaped werewolf, I don't care. I would straight up write a blank check to ZOS for that. I need my character to finally look like he's supposed to.
(and yes, Skyrim mods proved that just swapping the werewolf model with a werebear and just keeping all of the wolf animations looks 100% fine)

I think it would be nice to use all those monkeys under the non combat pets as skins for the scamps given the similar movement frames.

Also the idea of turning exploding scamps into exploding monkeys has a certain degree of humor to it

Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

I wouldn't be opposed to a couple of these designed to address people's issues with the those skills. But I'd much rather them make new pets with scribing. I also wouldn't just kind new effects/colors on the existing models. For example, letting us change werewolf fur color pattern.

What I don't want to see:
    • A winged twilight style that turns it into a flame atronach that uses zap attacks and heals...
    • An eternal guardian (Warden Bear) style that turns it into a shalk that stands up to do a bear stun attack...

What I do want to see:
    • A grimoire that allows us to summon a flame atronach that uses fireball attacks and explodes when it dies
    • A grimoire that allows us to summon a shalk with a second ability that makes it stop moving and to start emitting flames in a small radius.
    • A texture update for winged twilight, daedric familiar, and eternal guardian
    • Styles for winged twilight and daedric familiar that don't change the types of creature they are, but instead change their color (e.g. Grey Bear or Summon Winged Twilight, Warrior) , or give them accessories like a backpack for the scamp (e.g. Undaunted Porter Scamp)

Yes, Skill Styles should change the creature of Pet and Transformation abilities
As long as you can still tell what skill it is. A snow leopard instead of a bear, a different clannfear instead of the clannfear we have, a storm atronach creature instead of matriarch. Those would make sense.
