Riding speed: Getting passed like I'm parked.

Returned a month ago, my riding speed seems much slower.

I have
* Full riding speed skill
* Fully leveled Assault: charging maneuver skill

When I gallop in-world, and with assault skill active, there are people who pass me like I'm parked.

The charging maeuver does almost(?) nothing, is it now only a PVP skill?

The only thing I see I don't have is in the green CP tree, there is a high skill that requires a large investement to get just 10% bonus (2% x5). Unless this skill unlocks other tiers and keeps going higher, idk what else it could be. 10% is not going to fix my speed.

As it sits, galloping is just very slightly faster than sprinting with med/armor bonuses on stam toon and ROTWH. Its not even worth it most of the time to mount.

afaict, there must be other tiers of riding speed that are only available to very high CP characters, or possibly items or enchants im not aware of.

Don't underestimate the CP. It makes a huge difference, especially on high distances like cyrodiil.
I think others players have it slotted, who pass you.

Is it just 10%? Or are there other tiers above 10%?

Gallop is now a passive skill you get from the Continuous Attack passive, so casting Charging Maneuver won't do anything for your speed at all, that was changed some years ago, I still see returning players casting that skill around. xD

Ring of the Wild Hunt doesn't affect your mount speed, sadly.

They made changes to mount speed in Update 45.
    Check out the patch notes.
    Updates to Initial Mount Speed
The team wanted your initial experience unlocking a mount to be more impactful, so we've made significant improvements to the speed of mounts prior to unlocking Major Gallop. The end result of these changes is that mounts will start out noticeably faster than they did previously, i.e. you are now much less likely to be overtaken on foot when mounted, while still ending up at the same speed (or very slightly faster at the top end). The details of these changes are:

    - Increased the base mounted speed bonus to 42%, up from 15%.
    - Major Gallop is now Gallop, and counts as a Minor buff instead of a Major buff. The multiplicative bonus of Gallop is now 15% instead of 30%.
    - Note: Due to the way that this bonus multiplies with base speed, this ends up being no change for fully trained mounts,
or a very slight buff if you’re also using the Gifted Rider champion star. See below for more detail!

Here are the percent changes different folks can expect to see, as a percentage change from their prior speed:
    - Sprinting on a brand new mount: +19%
    - Sprinting on a trained mount: +13%
    - Sprinting on a brand new mount with Gallop: +5%
    - Sprinting on a trained mount with Gallop: No Change
    - Sprinting on a trained mount with Gallop and Gifted Rider: +1%

      There it is!

I tested ride speed between two points, then added first rank of Continuous Attack and tested again. It went from 10 seconds to 8 seconds over that distance.

Looks like I need to grind up my Assault from 7 to 9. Does that mean I have to actually go into Cyrodil?

That or you could craft an Adept Rider set, afaik Assault skill and that set are the only sources of gallop.

The second rank of Continuous Attack does nothing for mount speed. You get all of Gallop (a single buff) from one point invested, which requires nowhere near rank 7, much less 9.

Gallop and Gifted Rider are additive with each other. They are then multiplicative with the sum of base speed, sprint, and training.

Movement speed and mounted speed are mutually exclusive categories. The Steed mundus is so named (like the Steed’s Blessing CP star) because it makes you move faster as if you were the steed, not while riding on one.

      What is a "trained mount"??

A bit of a misnomer now that mount training is character specific rather than mount specific.

A (fully) trained mount refers to having bought 60/60 speed training sessions on that character from the horsemaster at a stable (and/or having used the consumable riding lessons from crates or the Crown Store to skip the timegate).

Is that what you meant by "full riding speed skill" in your OP?

      Very cool.

So it sounds like, the only way to go faster is Gifted Rider, and I will need quite a few CP levels before I can pick that up.

I'm glad I asked. This seems to have brought riding speed back to where I remember it being.

You may be misunderstanding what that list represents. It is a list of the relative speed increases U45 brought compared to pre-U45 mount speed. It only compares values for the same speed buff combinations pre- and post-update, nothing else.

Here is how mount speed works now:

Base speed = 142% (that's in terms of the 6.7 m/s speed that is the base jog/run speed on foot)
Sprinting represents a 30% additive boost to that
Mount speed training represents a 60% additive boost to that

Before considering Gallop or Gifted Rider, the max mount speed is 202% (~13.5 m/s) while not sprinting and 232% (~15.5 m/s) while sprinting.

Gallop and Gifted Rider are also given in percentages, but they're multiplicative bonuses. Add them together first, if you have both, then multiply that against your mount speed without either.

If you have only Gallop, 232% (from sprinting on a "trained mount") becomes 269% (~17.9 m/s).

If you have only Gifted Rider, 232% becomes 255.2% (17.1 m/s).

If you have both Gallop and Gifted Rider, 232% becomes 290% (~19.4 m/s).

This is sorta in line with my test.

A distance that took 10s of riding without Gallop, was reduced to 8s. 8/10 = .8

      OTH, by speed, 15.5 / 17.9 = .87

Informal test showed approx a 20% reduction, and it feels noticeably faster.

What they published, or what is known about the equation may not play out exactly, it could be clouded by fudge factors/bugs, or other adjustments. IOW, Gallop tested as a 20% reduction.

      - Sprinting on a trained mount: +13%
      - Sprinting on a brand new mount with Gallop: +5%
      - Sprinting on a trained mount with Gallop: No Change
      - Sprinting on a trained mount with Gallop and Gifted Rider: +1%

Also a returned player here. So sprinting with full rider skills does indeed do nothing? I thought I was going crazy.

ETA: fixed typo that led to incorrect results (twice)

This is sorta in line with my test.

A distance that took 10s of riding without Gallop, was reduced to 8s. 8/10 = .8

      OTH, by speed, 15.5 / 17.9 = .87

Informal test showed approx a 20% reduction, and it feels noticeably faster.

What they published, or what is known about the equation may not play out exactly, it could be clouded by fudge factors/bugs, or other adjustments. IOW, Gallop tested as a 20% reduction.

You can track your actual speed using a minimap like Fyrakin's. That can show your speed in terms of m/s, ft/s, or % (in terms of the 6.7 m/s that is 100%). Bandit also had a speed tracker. It may still work, but I haven't tested it recently.

Consoles will have add-ons shortly after the launch of update 46 in June. Perhaps these speed trackers will work there as well.

The trackers will show that your speed has small variations as you hit uneven terrain, invisible bumps, etc., or as you fall or boost (hit sprint again while sprinting). But it will hover around a certain number that is what the game is calculating for your speed.
