[Request] New Social Setting regarding Targeted Mementos

Hello. I've seen discourse recently about memento griefing, particularly on players using the dancer personality or wearing the Carnival crown crate items.

Mudball griefing is nothing new, and strictly speaking, against TOS. As long as we clearly and directly request the griefer to stop, any repeated offenses are qualified TOS violations.

But we all know that gathering evidence of the violation and reporting it is often more trouble than it's worth. Griefers know this too. So, I suggest some new social settings:
  • Targeted Mementos
    1. Enable All [default]
    2. Suppress All
    3. Suppress from player
      • Opens list of players that have recently targeted you with a memento paired with which memento was used

This would neatly neuter any and all mudball griefers, further narrowing the vectors for harassment to mostly text, which is easily screen capped and reported. I hope keeping the list of memento uses isn't too much trouble to log.
Thank you for coming to my T E D talk

I would support anything that will disable mudballs on our characters. Including:

    - toggle on/ off
    - removing mudballs entirely
    - disabling mudballs from players on your ignore list
    - disabling mudballs outside of New Life festival
    - etc, anything, really

Honestly, mudballs are such a nuisance, I'm actually astonished they're still in the game.

    More potential options
    • Suppress from non-friends
    • Suppress from non-guild mates
    • Suppress from non-group members

More simply, mudballs should just never cancel/override players' emotes.

After that, the only issue to fix would be the mementos that forcibly move other characters, which also cancels emotes.

I like this idea, it seems nicely flexible to accommodate everyone. The only thing I can think to suggest as an addition would be to make individual Mementos toggle-able too (so you have the option to turn off Mudballs from everyone but leave the Cherry Branch enabled), and to make sure that if you target someone with that Memento as part of a quest (like for New Life) you should still get credit for the quest if they’re suppressing it so we don’t get trolling in the other direction (EX: people turning off Mudballs and then gathering in Skywatch to impede throws).

I feel like this is focusing a bit too much on mudball, because there are way more obtrusive mementos, skills, mounts and emotes that are used for griefing, and neither of those need a target.

One can join the ever shrinking roleplaying community of ESO to learn how creative griefers are by spamming mementos, skills and mounts that got loud and light effects. I think the mudball is one of the least obtrusive things I've seen compared to others, although of course still is one too.

That seems fair to me. It allows for a bit more control over one own's character without punishing people for fair use of the mud balls. I agree it should count for the quest regardless of status.

I'd love to be able to toggle off being affected by other players' mementos all together. I've been harassed by mudballs when trying to open safe boxes. I've been hit repeatedly with flowers by a former friend who thought it was fun to do that to me every single time we were together. I just find these things childish and don't enjoy them. We shouldn't have to be unconsenting participants in what someone else finds fun.

I like the selective able/enable options. I wouldn't mind too much if it were fully enabled only during the relevant event.

If you are on PC there is an addon called "who mudballed me" or something like that. It gives a name and timestamp in the chat window when this happens. Helps requesting a stop, and reporting if necessary.

If I get hit with a mudball when I'm running through town I just brush it off (literally) and move on. But it would prevent a lot of conflict if we could just toggle these things off.

That's amazing; I was worried this would be difficult to pin down. If it's already in the API adding this as a setting should be really straightforward.

I think the toggle to disable being affected by mementos and such should be clientside only. What that means is:
    1. Player A enables the setting to make themselves immune to mementos.
    2. Player B throws a mudball at Player A.
    3. Player A does not see Player B throw a mudball at them and is not covered in mud on their screen.
    4. Meanwhile, Player B and Player C both see Player A being pelted with the mudball.
This means Player A does not have to see themselves be affected by mementos, but everyone else does. This allows Player A to not be harassed, while allowing Player B to be able to use their memento as expected, and there's no change for spectators like Player C.

What I don't want to see is players being able to suppress other players' ability to use mementos. The solution I proposed above would allow people to avoid being harassed while allowing everyone else to see and play the game as normal.

@Credible_Joe I agree that this would be very nice to have. I submitted a report about a player that was being extremely negative in a server, camping items people were trying to get, and when we happened to get one, the player bombarded us consistently with pies and mudballs. The player would then chase us around when we tried to get away. When asked nicely in Zone Chat and whispers, the player refused to stop and cussed us out.

ZOS found nothing wrong with the players actions, even though several of us asked them to stop, to which they refused and got more aggressive.

I don't see the harm in these momentos when it's a one off, but the players that are abusing them and becoming nuisances shouldn't be able to just get away with it unscathed. This adds a layer of protection for the players that don't want to be bothered by the effects, while allowing the player who is activating the momento, to continue doing so.

I agree with this point. Snowballs don’t. Mudballs kick you out of your animation to do theirs. Radiating regeneration and spaulder also kick you out of emotes. Just make emotes take priority over other things. Maybe I want to be smacked to death while playing the flute!

Pies could be a problem and should be included as well. I had someone constantly harass me with the Murderous Shrike emote too so I would like that included.

I don’t think the player who targets another but is blocked should see the mudball or whatever either. If the player doesn’t want to get pelted, then it should not happen at all. Some random shouldn’t get the satisfaction. If it’s a friend then they shouldn’t be on the list, unless they won’t comply, and then if they are it is stopped.

So this is another issue here: If, before submitting the report, we are expected to ask the offending player to stop, and then ZOS does nothing anyway, then we are at a disadvantage, since reacting to trolling behaviours usually just encourages the trolls.

Just to prevent having a player list just for mementos, I would replace the third option with "Enable from:", and dropdown checkboxes that let you pick groups from existing lists, so "group", "friends", and "guildmates".

I totally support the idea, but like you originally suggested, with a custom (and preferably unlimited) list of targets because using the awfully tiny list of Ignored Players wouldn't suffice.

This is a good suggestion. Perhaps just an on/off setting would be simpler.
