I am ALL FOR THIS IDEA. All of my toons are magicka and I am in a Psijic style mode ATM.
But that being said, the issue could be the camera view being too high up. It's already bad in some places like the televani public dungeon (in the houses and some cave passages). You'd end up looking through your character or something. Not sure how they would solve that issue.
But ya, I love floating mage animations (my favorite animation of all time is the Sorcerer from Star Wars the Old Republic when they do their Force Lighting AOE spell, they float up in the air, with a "Christ on a cross" pose with arms stretched out and channel rains lighting down.
We have a memento that looks similar, but it cant be used in combat.
