Maintenance for the week of September 8:
• [COMPLETE] PC/Mac: EU megaserver for maintenance – September 9, 22:00 UTC (6:00PM EDT) - September 10, 16:00 UTC (12:00PM EDT)

Is cross-play, or at least cross-save more on the horizon now?

Cross-save is absolutely possible, like, right now. Different game builds can pull data from and save data to the same database; we have the PTSpocalypse from last year to thank for this revelation.

All the PTS issue proved is that the database copy really is a copy.

Copy? My guy, account changes on the PTS build were being passed on into Live; players that deleted characters on the PTS found that it was deleted on Live, and any gold that you banked from the PTS templates appeared in your Live account's bank as well. There's no "copy"; it was literally writing to the exact same database.

It's been said countless times, they can get around duplicate names by putting a unique # number on the players account and character names.

Is it impossible to do, of course not, just need to allocate resources and time.
But if they allowed crossplay/save (as much as I want it) the crown store would take a hit, also how would ESO plus work? One sub for all three platforms, yeah they'd lose money.

The question isn't can they do it, because I'm sure the big brains could figure it out.
No the question should be "are they willing to take the financial hit".

What they could do is poll the player base a simple yes or no question "would you like to see crossplay or cross-save in the future?"

But in game on the login screen that you have to answer, not on the forums or Reddit as not all players use said platforms.

Oh, is it time for this thread again? We really should have a sticky for "cross-play/cross-save" so we don't have to rehash the same points literally every week.

[*] Yes, there will probably be some legalese also getting in the way. XB and PC are both under the Microsoft umbrella, but I doubt a company as greedy as Sony will enjoy any way of people being able to leave Sony (and stop paying the online fee to Sony) for something else.

    Did I miss anything?

I could see xbox/ PC crossplay potentially. The question is, does that benefit microsoft, or hurt them? If people can transition from xbox to pc, I believe it would mean less future xbox players. So I think the whole thing is a pipe dream.

At the very least, I could see each device(xb,ps,pc) merge their NA&EU respectively, and even that could be disastrous. I like the way things are, personally.

As for server load: PC NA is the most active megaserver by far, and even it doesn’t suffer from the population bottlenecks that plague PS EU or Xbox EU. Far from being a one-way street, cross-play would revitalize low-pop console servers and give players more options—especially for group content that currently struggles to queue. ZOS could easily use matchmaking flags (already used in PvP) to allow players to opt in or out of mixed pools, if that’s a concern.

I'm not sure about your premise, but the reason PC NA doesn't have the same pressures as the EU servers is because the NA population is spread across different time zones whereas the EU servers have much less variation in their players' time zones. This is reflected therefore in player concurrency.

I mean, Sarajevo is definitely not in the same time zone as London. Europe’s a big place, too. Having said that, I can’t speak to European login patterns as I’ve not looked at the data. If you’re unsure of my premise—that PCNA is the most populous server—then that’s your call.

I'm only unsure because I've seen no evidence either way. The only time I'm aware that ZOS has commented on the relative populations across the 6 servers they said they were all broadly equal.

I'm equally unsure of the scale of Sarajevo's contribution to the playerbase, but I suspect that the majority of players on the EU servers are within the EU and UK, with a one hour difference in time so their peak periods are more or less the same.

I don't want cross play but i do want cross save so I can play my console account on PC without starting over it should be possible the only factor is you would probably have to change your account name and character names but other than that I don't see why it can't be implemented.

Elite Dangerous did something similar where you could port your console account to PC I hope we can do that someday.

I also play on PC from time to time but I just wanna be left alone on there so sorry.

I think a Vengence style crossplay pvp server could be cool and also feasible. Because everything gets paused when entering Vengence and trade is disabled its probably the most likely/feasible scenerio. Identical names would be the biggest issue.

I should clarify that I don’t pretend to have any great insights into this. I came across a Reddit post—not the best source, I know—that claimed PCEU was the most populous server, at least around the time of the post (2021). PCNA may well have a slightly smaller number of players, or it may have at one point. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if that were still the case.

Anyway, fair enough! Maybe I should amend that statement to PC, although again, there’s nothing I can point to beyond anecdotal evidence.
