That is an unexpected feature of one of your addons.

Personal opinion: unexpected, unknown features that confuse the user and have no bearing on the stated use of the software are nearly malware.

    Dolgubon's.

Every year, there are people shocked about Dolg's April Fool's joke. And every year, people think it's a ZOS thing. And every year, people complain about it.

I really wish people would learn what their addons do. I remember the one year that he changed the UI to make it seem like you were using gold mats for daily writs and people freaked out and started complaining to ESO's support team.

Pranks are one thing, but when your pranks are causing logistical issues to a third party, then it's too much.

Was neither shocked, nor think it was a ZOS thing, nor is it a complaint, nor is it causing an issue to anyone other than leaving me slightly confused as to what was the cause of my goat slaughtering - something easily remedied by asking on the forum.

Maybe you didn't. But people will. Just wait for it. It'll start. Like it does every year.

"How do I complete the Pyrite endeavors?"
    "Wait, what are Pyrite endeavors?"
    "I don't have those!"
"I didn't get my reward for the Pyrite endeavors!"
    "ZOS! Fix your game!"

Hmmm. It's April fool's day. So, an addon creator put a fun joke quest in the game for our enjoyment. For me personally, this is another fun interaction in the game. I welcome anything, which invites more fun into this game.

Why? The Pyrite endeavors April Fool's joke from the addon are basically just a fun little mini quest for you to do (if you want), that doesn't give you any rewards for completing it. It's just adding a novel activity for the day that you can completely ignore if you don't want to do it.

I love that Dulgubon does this every year, or something similar anyway. Not only does he write and maintain the best add on in ESO, he's also got a great sense of humor. And he even responds quickly if you email him.

By the way, pyrite is "fools gold" in case you didn't know.

This was my first year using that addon because a while back ZOS did something that messed up the feature that could toggle only the recipes you needed to craft for daily writs and I was advised to get this addon which automates the entire process. So obviously I never encountered this before and admittedly I thought it was kinda funny but only because I immediately realized it was an April Fools and thought it was initiated by ZOS. Tbh, I find it kinda creepy that an addon can modify the game’s interface to that extend… I am seriously rethinking whether keeping an addon capable of something like this is worth the minor convenience it provides. Obviously this was intended as a bit of harmless fun and I am not usually a grinch and can take a joke but it’s definitely giving me pause because something like this can definitely be abused in the wrong hands.

OK, by the time I logged in to ESO, I had forgotten it was April Fool's so I went on a fun little adventure.

It was fun to see many other players doing the same.

That was a very clever April Fools' addon feature, but what I don't understand is, if they are capable of such things, why do I have to manually craft the Jewel Writs books?

You have two choices on April 1.

Login and enjoy the pranks that addon authors and devs do for the day.

    Or

    Watch Friend's Reruns.

No matter what choice, don't take anything seriously.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I did it, and I had fun. Then a guild member asked why so many goats get killed in the game, my response was to make up a story.

It all started, as many terrible things do, with a misplaced cheese wheel. Not just any cheese wheel, mind you, but the legendary "Gorgonzola of Grothdarr," a dairy product so potent it could make a guar weep with joy (or, more likely, spontaneous combustion).
A Khajiit named Mittens-of-Mayhem, a self-proclaimed "Culinary Chaos Consultant," was attempting to deliver this cheese to the esteemed chef, "Bartholomew the Butter-Brained," in Wayrest. However, Mittens, distracted by a particularly shiny butterfly, tripped, sending the Gorgonzola of Grothdarr rolling.
Now, this cheese, due to its sheer, unadulterated cheesiness, emitted a pheromone-like aura, a siren call to every goat in a 50-league radius. These goats, possessed by an insatiable, cheese-fueled frenzy, stampeded towards the source, like a hairy, bleating tidal wave.
Unfortunately, the Gorgonzola had rolled directly into the training grounds of the Daggerfall Covenant's newest recruits. These recruits, mostly Breton nobles with a severe lack of combat experience and an overabundance of fear, mistook the cheese-crazed goats for a Daedric invasion.
Panic ensued. Swords were swung with the accuracy of a drunken mudcrab. Spells were cast with the precision of a blind alchemist. And the goats, bless their cheese-addled hearts, just kept coming.
The sheer, overwhelming number of goats, combined with the recruits' flailing and the occasional accidental fire spell, resulted in a goat-slaughter of truly epic proportions. The air was thick with the scent of singed fur, overripe cheese, and existential dread.
News of this "goat-tastrophe" spread throughout Tamriel. The Ebonheart Pact, seeing an opportunity for free mutton, sent in their own "goat-retrieval" squads (read: hungry warriors). The Aldmeri Dominion, ever the perfectionists, attempted to "strategically cull" the goat population, but mostly just ended up with a lot of singed feathers and confused Altmer.
And so, the legend was born. Whenever you see a pile of goat carcasses in Elder Scrolls Online, remember: it's not a bug, it's a tribute. A tribute to the Gorgonzola of Grothdarr, the chaos it wrought, and the sheer, glorious absurdity of Tamriel. And to Mittens-of-Mayhem, who, last we heard, was trying to explain to a very angry chef why his cheese tasted like burnt hair and fear.

Since this is from an Addon and the OP was confused by it just suddenly appearing, then I take it Addons are updated automatically somehow without the user's knowledge/confirmation.

    That's hella dangerous.
