Should ESO have more 3-piece sets?

BasP

ESO currently has nine three-piece sets, but I believe most of them have fallen behind in usefulness or have been power-crept. While using a single piece of Trainee is common and Blessing of the Potentates sees some niche use, how often do you see sets like Vengeance Leech, Wrath of the Imperium, or Eagle Eye in builds these days?

I still think it would be great if ESO introduced more three-piece sets in the future, however. If they would be decent - and available in all armor weights, not just jewelry and weapons - I think they could encourage greater build diversity and theory crafting. For example, a setup could include two Arena weapons, a five-piece set, a three-piece set, and either a Monster Set or a Mythic with a single Monster piece.

Since they need to be redone anyway they could look into redoing the base game zone sets as 3 pieces, maybe with the lesser cost/slots needed some could actually be of some use

There's a video/spreadsheet by a YouTuber named Skinnycheeks who presented an idea of a bunch of sets getting changed into 3 piece sets, or at least re-tuning the 5's to be more useful. A lot of his ideas seem really fun and exciting. I'd love if ZOS did something in that aim.

With the introduction of the mythics, this 3pc set is far more potentially useful, and could really open a lot of build options especially trying to use some combo of arena weapons mythics and/or monster sets. Maybe some of these overland that don’t get used much could be adapted.

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

An idea that I like is to make some of the sets with extremely specific/niche mechanics into 3-pc, ie Glorious Defender or Hist Bark. That way they could be paired with a mostly complete build and not have to trade as much stat density for a niche mechanic.

Absolutely! Was just having this discussion with a guildmate the other day. She was trying to find 3 piece sets as she is starting to get serious about PvP (I think she settled on Potentates).

As mentioned above, retooling some old, "forgotten" sets into 3-pieces could really get some mileage out of them.

4-piece sets, to fit 3 Class Sets on a single build. Each Class has three skill lines, and it'd be great if a player could equip a 4-piece Class Set for each of their three Class skill lines — granted, if/when we do get our 3rd Class Set from the Infinite Archive.

Other than that, yes, I'd love to see more 3-piece sets. It's fun to cobble together builds using the strange set piece number requirements of some sets.

Could also make some 3 piece sets that are different items besides the weapon/jewelry sets. A head/chest/shoulder combo that looks like a hooded robe when together, for example. Feet/leg/waist combo (with some sort of speed as the 3p bonus?), as well.

Class Sets should have been 3 piece sets. Many of them aren't necessarily good at all and only provide a niche play option that's behind even off meta. Them being 3 piece would make them competitive with monster sets, mythics, and arena weapons.

I have no qualms about adding more sets as it is an eventuality for the same reason we get them multiple times a year. I will note that there is a camp that says absolutely not, but not about three pc sets themselves, but no more sets in general. Again, more sets will be added for obvious reasons.

I agree. More sets that have a 1 PC bonus and more 3 piece sets would be nice. I'd also like to see more 2 piece sets that aren't head/shoulder monster sets.

I'd also like to see more sets that offered niche, just for fun gameplay options.

Like what if we got gloves and a chest piece that made unarmed attacks viable in easier content.

Sure, I guess. I'd be happier if they spend a season's development cycle giving all the older sets some love though. 90% of the sets in the game, whether overland, dungeon or trial, are decon fodder, and even many of the mythics have no use case that's compelling enough for anyone to bother using them. Most of the craftable sets are only ever crafted for master writs or the occasional daily endeavour.

*Every* set in the game should be viable in some way and between them it should be possible to achieve a number of different metas that are all near-as-dammit competitive (to the same extent that the various races are, at least). And it would be interesting if different combinations of race and class had different metas. Despite much effort over the years we still have a situation where no-pet sorc has basically never been competitive in PVE: sets could be used to address this. There are loads of almost-interesting dungeon or overland sets but for PVE it's more or less a prerequisite to have minor slayer which is only available from trial sets (or from oakensoul, which comes with the drawback of not having a second bar): revamping a useless monster set to provide minor slayer as the one piece bonus could fix this and open up a lot more interesting set combinations.

We have a situation where staffs are more about role than class, but the different elements are inherently tied to class. If ZoS reworked the different staves so that their damage buffs were tied to the type of damage they amplify (x% buff to own element damage plus magic damage, say) then this could be fixed overnight: inferno staves would be meta for DKs, lightning staves would be meta for sorcs, ice staffs would be meta for wardens; the other classes are a mix of damage types or lean more heavily into magic damage, so the meta staff for them might vary dependent on other aspects of the build.

Instead of adding more three-piece sets, ESO should focus on integrating key gameplay-changing effects directly into character classes. Many class identities have been eroded over time due to the overwhelming reliance on sets to provide mechanics that should be core to the class itself. A prime example is Necromancer’s Corpseburster, which fundamentally alters how the class plays but is locked behind gear instead of being a natural extension of the toolkit.

Rather than expanding the ever-growing list of sets, ESO would benefit from streamlining existing options and restoring class-defining abilities. This would make buildcrafting feel less like an exercise in chasing gear bonuses and more about engaging with the strengths of each class. If three-piece sets are to remain relevant, then they should serve as subtle enhancements to playstyles—not the determining factor in whether a class feels complete.

I think they need to remove the need to slot Mythics on the body/jewelry and create a slot just for Mythic items. I don't think the ability to use a Monster Set + a Mythic Item + 2 5Piece sets would add such a power increase that it would break the game.

It would be nice to have some options. But with Mythic items, weapon sets, and monster sets, having too many options for 3-piece sets could cause some power imbalance.

For PvP, it would be nice if there was one for recovery or resource cost, as that's often something I'm hoping to get a bit more of while using my favorite sets.

For PvE (where 3-piece sets usually aren't used), one with crit chance would help, maybe even minor slayer. That could help build diversity a little bit.
