    It's not that it's "dark" - it's that it's Coldharbour.

I'm not a fan of the new login screen. The art is fine. The scene is just too gloomy, and my character doesn't blend into the background that well, which makes the contrast between her and the background quite jarring.

Like others, I'd love the ability to choose the background.

Do people just sit and admire the login screen? I don't spend a long time on the login screen, so I guess I'm not understanding this level of upset.

Having said that, the new one is soothing to the eyes after the overly bright yellow/orange of the last though it isn't nearly as pretty.

I don't generally spend more than a few moments on that screen, but if the background is one I like, I will sometimes pause before logging in to admire the art.

I think part of the problem with some of them, though, is that the lighting/effects are hard on people's eyes, even leading to headache/migraine. In that case a few seconds can seem longer and more intrusive.

As I said in my first post in this thread, I like the coloring (and also the lighting; it's not so irksome as the brightness of West Weald became over time), it's more just the fact that it's Coldharbour.
But, I *have* spent some time decorating the Surreal Estate Plain, so it's not like I really hate being in Coldharbour all that much.
I'm getting to the point where I'd rather have this, that we are most likely stuck with, anyway, than having to see the desert scene for my DC characters IF (if, if, if; I get it, and got it the first time) they were to go back to the Alliance backgrounds (I don't really mind the EP and AD backgrounds; I just really hate the DC one because my characters aren't desert-loving folk.)
I mostly have EP characters, but DC comprise most of the rest, with I think 3 AD characters.

Im with you on this. I liked the other two Alliance backgrounds, especially AD, but imo the desert background just never fit my DC chars. I think it should have been a Glenumbra themed background.

I loved the desert theme for DC, because the only race I really play is redguards. Yes, I have bretons; not thrilled with playing them though.... I have two at cp160 (across MANY alts) - a sorc and a templar. Neither is as fun to play as my warden redguards. I do have a few other redguards in other classes, but not really as much fun to play.

I was so nicely surprised when I saw the new background, it’s so much better than the previous one which was too bright. Coldharbour is one of my favorites, I never found it depressing, rather quiet and soothing, and full of nice landscapes like from a dream (or nightmare for those who don’t like this zone).
It would be appreciated if we could choose our backgrounds tho, so everyone can see what they most enjoy in the game.

The log in screen now is too gloomy and blue. Colours have almost gone. We should be allowed to choose the log in screen we want.

(The load screens, with the black frame also, is not good. Those illustrations are so good, and it hides so much of it.)

I'm not as fond of the new load screen as the 2 previous. But I will say the lighting is fantastic, whatever they did makes it look really sharp, clear and my charactesr look good.

I really wish ZoS would take Accessibility seriously.
This Coldharbour screen (which I actually like) is causing migraines. It's triggering depression.
Having a setting for color-blind people has been requested for years.
And I know there are a bunch of other Accessibility issues.

@ZOS_Kevin @ZOS_GinaBruno Please bring these issues to The Powers That Be with Accessibility as the main focus. Your playerbase is diverse and aging. It might cost money, but it'll only have positive benefits.

+1 giving us the ability to change to any previous login screen, like we can music (I liked the blinking Mora eye sneaking into the Necrom screen, personally).

Oh man was this a bad call graphically. I hate Coldharbour. Now we're stuck seeing that washed out blue depressing screen every time we log on or swap toons.

In a weird aside, it does feel representative of the state of the game we're logging onto these days, so maybe it's more appropriate than a more cheerful splash screen would be.

      Oh no. :s

Coldharbour gives me the creepy ick and sets me on edge. It's one of the few zones I actively avoid, Apocrypha being the other one that gives me ultra-squicky bad vibes. :#

Now we're prisoners in Coldharbour all over again! :'(

I loved the Gold Road login screen, it was so pretty and sunny, it helped my depression.

I play ESO to help me unwind and relax and escape Bad Things for a little while so I do a lot of farming in zones that feel nice to be in. Coldharbour is not a place that I want to be, and the start screen sets the mood when logging in.

Please reconsider and give us ANY screen other than Coldharbour or Apocrypha...?

Guess you forgot about Deadlands? I feel you.

I almost did name Deadlands & Fargrave as places I avoid, but since I don't get actively creeped out so much when going there, I decided not to dilute my point by listing them. They're tolerable. By comparison, Coldharbour and Apocrypha actually make my skin crawl and I can't get out of those zones fast enough. Especially Apocrypha with all the slime and tentacles and eye stalks. GUH. NOPE.

How many players know that the "water" in Coldharbour isn't actually water? It's actually an ecto-visceral-fluid-soup-slime that daedra are formed out of. So disgusting. Think about that the next time you have to swim around in it. It would be like bathing in egg whites. *shudder*

Maybe it's a seasonal screen, to be changed several times a year. One can hope.

I wanted to add that the character texture improvement here is really great. My characters look better than ever! I just wish more thought was put into the background – not just "let's go back to the roots and take this iconic badlands landscape as the BG again", but more like "hey what sort of background should we design that really sells the game, stays interesting over a longer period of time, and is easy on the eyes as something that players will see repeatedly and that new players will see as the literally first thing?".

I'm kind of sorry and not sorry to see the eruption of negative comments here. I know ESO can look beatiful, inventive and exciting. That's why I am here! So it hurts to dis so much  but at the same time I really really, really hope we don't have to look at this monochrome doomscape for a long time. There are better ways to sell the game that come closer to pleasing everyone's different tastes, even if the background cannot be made customisable by players.

        Hope the powers are reading!

I just started a new character and it seems that Coldharbour is now again the starting point for new characters. I tried to skip it, but the tedious man in the hood started turning up and seems convinced I have no soul. I have always found the soulless aspect of the game to be offensive and the "Main Quest" to be tedious, but now they are forcing it on us again. Someone needs to tell them that forcing players to do things is not good business.

Agree. We should really be able to skip the MQ when we have already done it. At least get rid in the q-journal

Wow, it seems at the very least, the story writers and set designers did their job. Seeing lots of people feel the cold depressed terrible feeling of an oblivion realm of a deadric prince. It seems to be evoking a lot of feeling.
I guess I don't feel either way about it. I'm in the character select screen for so short a time, I try not to sweat the small stuff. Of course your milage may vary.

I’m a Sagittarius ♐️, a Mutable sign, so options is my middle name. I’ll like this for awhile and then wish we had the option to pick something else, enjoy that for a while, and then wish I could pick something else, etc. so my vote is for us getting to select our backgrounds for each character like I can do in DCUO. Even getting to select one background to use for all our characters would be better than not getting to change the background at all.

How about showing Hollow City in Coldharbour as the background?

It is true that Coldharbour is intentionally very dreary, but Hollow City is not.

Might this be a nice compromise?

I'm not annoyed by the current character select screen, but it is confusing because it seems more relevant for 2014.

Then in practical terms, I guess ZOS hasn't noticed players taking screenshots of their characters in the character select screen. Though it was also an issue with the previous character select screen, the current color filtering pretty much eliminates this practice.

IMO, the character select screen should have no color filtering and ideally would be themed around recent content.

I think the best answer to the question of the character selection screen is to simply let us choose it ourselves. Give the opportunity to use the original base game selection screen, and the rest of them from Morrowind to today. No new menu screens have to be made; we can just recycle old assets and put the effort of creating something new somewhere else in the game!
