Depressing Character Login Screeen

Allow me to add my voice to the 'strongly dislike' side.

The response to 'overly orange' shouldn't be 'overly blue' instead; that's just replacing one thing a lot of people don't like with something else a lot of people won't like.

At least the orange wasn't as depressing as the new screen. 'I dislike the colour' is a minor gripe compared to 'this gives me an unpleasant feeling (why am I playing this game again?)'. Not exactly inviting for new players either...

Lastly I get the impression there's something about it that's giving me actual physical eye strain. Looking at this scene for a bit quickly generates an uncomforable twisty tension feeling that I don't seem to get when looking similarly at a random in-game scene. The feeling persists for a while after leaving that screen. Luckily the lighting is so ugly (to my taste) that I won't spend much time looking at my characters here.

Is there a way to change it?

    I agree. It's crap.

All of these extremes backgrounds lately makes me miss the faction based ones. Didn't like how ill-fitting those could be, but at least there was variety.

This one cause less eye strain for me, but I'm sure the blue colour will be worse for others. It also makes certain characters and colours look bad, same way West Weald's too yellow did.

If not being able to pick between any background, at least give us a few options.

Agree, except neutral towards the ugly mushroom. If it is supposed to put me in the mood to buy something it misses the mark. I would prefer the option of having this one (or the other two):

This screenshot one is actually one that I do not like. Too many colors and too much clutter to fade/blend the characters and mount and pet away in.

I'd love a per character setting. Coldharbour for the edgelords, a peaceful meadow for the treehuggers and the char's Alliance capital or one of the DLC cities for the rest.

Something I loved in Cyberpunk was that the menu screen background (and audio, not applicable to ESO) changed depending on where you were in the story.

I wonder if this would be an idea for ESO based on where your character last was (and yes I can see how that might complicate things, developer work-wise, when selecting different characters, but you could just base it on the last character you used).

i would love to change backgrounds too.

per usual it's related to the story though, the prologue quest that got added with update 45 has the Worm Cult.

Coldharbour really is one of the most depressing zones out there. I like blue but this is just depressing. It would be nicer to be able to pick one or at least use from the zone you are sitting that character in. Hint... its not depressing Coldharbour.

Just here to say "yes please I agree". I've posted a couple of times about wanting to choose my own login screen BG; I appreciate the follow-up here saying that's been discussed in the studio and not technically feasible. While that is the case, maybe just... reintroduce the alliance BGs? They were cute, and fundamentally basegame (which I surmise is the motivation behind the Coldharbour picture).

I agree. Just like the music, it would be cool to selected a specific chapter login screen.

Agreed. I genuinely miss the AD/DC/EP screens. They were varied, and not overtly depressing or too bright. Coldharbour is to ESO as The Fade is to Dragon Age Origins for me: I only go there if I have to, for as short a time as possible. Even my Coldharbour house is simply my furniture storage.

For future refernece for the devs: One-note palettes are _really_ wearing on the brain (this includes the firelands red /apocrypha puke green/ the hot yellow from last year's screen too), and that includes Coldharbour despite blues being my favourite colour. There are some good studies that suggest one-note palettes like this are more difficult to bear for people with depression/anxiety and ND folks (and also people who get flashy migraines). There's a reason they're usually used in films to suggest something is "wrong" and "danger". To have them on an opening screen is not "welcoming".

This is just a thought--not trying to argue; just adding to the discussion. :)

Regardless that I'm not faction oriented at all, I'd MUCH rather have the AD and DC ones (I have no pact characters) than this new excrescence.

I like it, but then I'm more drawn to dark color schemes than too bright. The Gold Road screen was too orange and yellow for my preference.

Why would we even be standing in Coldharbour?

My guess is that maybe the content they'd been working on before they decided to shift cadence to a "seasons" format was somehow related to Coldharbour and the war in Cyrodiil. Those two things might not seem to go together, but anyone who's been to Cyrodiil and the Imperial City knows otherwise. It would kind of make sense as far as being the 10-year anniversary (last year extending into this year), and even the return to the old tutorial/start of the game for new characters may have been part of wanting to get back to what this game is/was all about (storywise).

the fact that the devs actively change it means its possible to have it be changeable as a option in the client.. if it cannot be done dynamically while in the main menu due to engine issues, then have it only affect when re-entering the screen.

alternatively we could even be given the ability to manually select a file via a setting in a text file, even allowing us to set a static background or wallpaper.

either way i do miss the old days where it was the alliance background, showing the background of your currently selected characters alliance.. that is far better than coldharbor..

a option previewing the characters current location would also be a nice one. showing coldharber if you are IN coldharber, Auridon if you are in Auridon, Cyrodill (with whitegold and its city in the distance) if your in Cyro.

i do not know why so many "live service" games do not allow main menu customization..

I play every class in every situation. I love them all.

No way to change it, at this time. In the past we have shared this from players to either change the background or change the music, but there are some tech limitations to make that happen currently. But we will share this with the team again just to make sure they know that there is still interest.

What? Seriously, there are "tech limitations" where you can't do this?

DCUO lets you change your log-in screen from about 10 different options from past DLC's and that game is older than this one!

    Oh no. :s

Coldharbour gives me the creepy ick and sets me on edge. It's one of the few zones I actively avoid, Apocrypha being the other one that gives me ultra-squicky bad vibes. :#

Now we're prisoners in Coldharbour all over again! :'(

I loved the Gold Road login screen, it was so pretty and sunny, it helped my depression.

I play ESO to help me unwind and relax and escape Bad Things for a little while so I do a lot of farming in zones that feel nice to be in. Coldharbour is not a place that I want to be, and the start screen sets the mood when logging in.

Please reconsider and give us ANY screen other than Coldharbour or Apocrypha...?

I think the new Coldharbour Screen is really great, much better than Gold Road at least. Lighting looks more natural (given the environment) and the entire color scheme isn't so damn oversaturated. It looks super calming to me, IMO one of the best loading screens, out of those that I remember. Also Coldharbour is cool, don't know why everyone's hating :D

That said, an option to switch character selection backgrounds would be really cool, both for those who don't like the current one and those who might want this one to stay once the new one comes around... or just to match the login screen to your characters outfits hehe
