Exiled Redoubt Antagonist Motivations Make Zero Sense [SPOILERS]

So...the antagonist for the Exiled Redoubt wants to end the war because he lost his son, which I understand. So, in order to prevent more families from losing their children, he...kills the children of families so that they will join his cause to end the war so that...no more families have to lose their children?

Umm, what? Am I missing something here?

It's probably to show how "wrong" his motivations are and how he spiraled into madness over the death of his son because his actions aren't rational... but it did come off as overall really awkwardly written in the end IMO. Like yes, people will do irrational and illogical things, even believe they are in the right, but it wasn't portrayed that well? It's a super one-dimensional approach at writing characters and stories that deal with such a dilemma.

It does give me High Isle Vibes again, to the likes of "The Alliance War needs to stop bc of all the power-hungry leaders and unnecessary bloodshed... so I will become a power-hungry leader and cause unnecessary bloodshed". Feels like this is supposed to be another attempt at a Three Banners War plotline.

I don't think the point is "prevent more families from losing their children." From what I understand, he went mad, truly insane, because of his son's death. The dungeon books make that pretty clear. He wants other families to lose their children so that the parents give up on the war—not to protect anyone, but to fulfill his son's wish in a twisted way.

Basically: "Ending the war was my son's goal, so I will end the war, even if it requires the death of both sides." You know? At least, that was my interpretation.

If you read the books and paper in the dungeon, especially the last one in the room past the final fight, you can see that he truly went mad. He was mad, therefore his motivations were mad.

To be fair I think this is a pretty common thing. Whenever people hear a story about a super heinous crime someone did, I'm always seeing people respond with something like ''we need to do (same heinous thing criminal did) to (criminal) but (makes it 5x worse)''
