When switching a weapon on her, once it is on her, I cannot get the old one back. Destroy or leaving it there is the only option. I could swear I remember being able to give and take items to the other follower. Is this a bug or a feature? Am I remembering wrong?

Thanks

Have you tried to drag an drop the previously equipped one to the weapon slot?

Could it be an addon issue?

So I went to check to see if this issue existed with other companions. And what I discovered is that they seem to share inventory that is accessable on all of them. I cannot retreive an item once they have it and probably it is bound to them. But it can be accessed on all of them. Soif you change it later you and want to use it on another companion, you just need to unequip it and it stays there for all of them, or at least that is how it seems. I guess in the long run this is actually more of a QOL improvement whether it was intended or not. No swapping toons just to change gear. Stick it on one, remove it and it is always there.

I apologize if this is commonly known. I only had one companion until ESO plus gave us two more free as a perk.

Ah. There might be a slight misunderstanding here.

The inventory on the right is your inventory. You are their Lydia, you're carrying their stuff.

If you just open your inventory, there's a Companion Gear tab where you can see all the companion gear that you are carrying around. The companion only carries the gear that they have equipped. If you unequip it, it goes back into your own inventory, and so you can give it to another one.

Great - now I have that line stuck in my head!

The UI can be a little confusing there, although it's more obvious what's going on when you hit a bank or vendor as then all companion gear in your inventory is listed in it's respective categories along with everything else.

Ok Thanks. It looks like it is in their inventory. But it switching back to mine makes sense.

There is an issue where you can't unequip an item that a Companion is wearing (double clicking on an equipment slot and dragging an item off an equipment slot sometimes don't work), but the workaround is to equip a different item to swap it out. Then you can take the item the Companion was wearing and put it on a different Companion.

It's an annoying bug that only sometimes happens. Usually it's not an issue.

I've encountered this before. It's not an issue for almost every gear piece, the exception being Rings and dual wield weapons. Equip from inventory will only ever displace the first of the two slots. There MIGHT be a workaround by equipping a 2H weapon; I'm not sure if equip from inventory will fill an empty slot or remain fixated on the first slot.

With Rings there is no workaround. Just have to either relog or wait for the problem to go away. I forget what encourages this to un-break; maybe switching companions, maybe re-zoning. ReloadUI didn't work for me. Definitely frustrating.

Do you use the addon, "Inventory Insight?" If you do, that is your issue. Just go to your addons and disable it temporarily, hit /reloadui and then try changing out the weapon/jewelry/gear items you want to take out or replace. I promise, that if you're using Inventory Insight, that IS your issue.

I know this because I have the exact same problem and when I disable the addon, I am then able to change out items on my companion. It's a quick and easy solution as when I'm done w/ swapping stuff on companion, i just go back into my addons and re-enable Inventory Insight. Anyone who argues that it simply can't be that, is just wrong or lucky to not be experiencing this particular issue w/ that addon.

Going to flag this for the team as this is still an issue. Thanks for flagging.

Are you running any addons? The team is taking a look and wanted to know.

Yes, I usually run addons, including Inventory Insight as mentioned above.

I'm not sure which steps have to be taken to recreate the bug, so I haven't been able to see if this occurs with addons disabled. I have had this bug happen to me when leaving my player home with a Companion who is automatically summoned to my side, though — it may have been because I logged in from character select into my home and left the home through the door, then switched the active Companion away from the one who was automatically summoned?

I have done further testing and found a way to reproduce this bug. It happens regardless of whether you have addons enabled.

When you open a crafting interface (such as a Blacksmithing Station) you lose the ability to remove equipment from your Companions. This also occurs when you talk to a Deconstruction Assistant.

I found that an easy way to fix this is to open your own Inventory screen. You don't need to equip or unequip anything from your own character; simply opening this menu will unlock the ability to unequip items from your Companions.

Thanks for this, it's super helpful. Passed this on to the team and they are looking to reproduce on their end. If they can, then they will work on a fix.

If I may chime in, I use crafting stations and assistants on all characters and have never had a problem - though I change equipment rather than first removing an item that a companion has equipped. When I do that then the item is in my characters inventory.

I am on console so it seems like an addon is likely the culprit.

Changing your equipment after leaving the crafting station entails opening your inventory to equip the item. Opening the inventory screen clears the bug, which is why you are able to unequip items from your Companions.

I would sometimes run into this bug myself because I routinely use a Merchant (to sell junk), then a Deconstruction Assistant (to deconstruct remaining junk), and sometimes then try to change Companion gear without opening my inventory first, as you'd expect since there's no reason to open your own inventory when you can only equip Companion equipment from their inventory screen.

I think the issue is that the game stores the last opened menu type as a variable somewhere in memory — maybe the Companion inventory menu screen fails to properly update the variable, so it treats the Companion inventory menu as the last type of menu that was opened. Since Companion equipment can't interact with the crafting system in any way, maybe it just defaults to doing nothing when Companion equipment is interacted with in that context.

Regardless, addons aren't the culprit if the bug occurs without them enabled.

Well, I have seen quite a few posts where PC players claim to not use addons, but it turns out that they are and just forgot.

Well, I have seen quite a few posts where PC players claim to not use addons, but it turns out that they are and just forgot.

When I did my testing, I specifically disabled addons from the settings menu. Regardless of whether addons were enabled or disabled, the bug occurred in the exact same way. That tells me that addons have no effect on how and whether this bug occurs.

I should note that reloading the UI (which happens with /reloadui or disabling/enabling one or more addons) fixes the bug. It might appear that disabling an addon fixing the bug implies that that specific addon was the issue — but if reloading the UI in general fixes it, even without any addons enabled, then I think it's more likely that reloading the UI resets the "last menu" variable and allows the Companion inventory to function as intended.
