Aren't we all "role-playing" by default? None of us are actually Templars or sorcerers etc.

You are playing a role in game yes. That is true. But in this instance it is meant in a way that you and friends get together and actually act out a scenario in character. Or generally just wing it off the bat if you wish, but how you imagine your character to be.

For example in terms of speech my character would speak in a completely different manner to how I do generally in real life.

That's a general gist of it anyway.

I see. So it means people who like to try and adopt a separate dialect and personality for their character. Interesting ^^

But I'm not sure why players would need a separate server to do this.

That may just be me. Did you see the part I wrote about acting out certain scenarios within your group?

People are asking for RP phases/servers because RPers get grief from others for taking part in RP sessions.

I saw it but I didn't understand specifically what you meant. I assumed it just meant chatting in flourished language or something.

Now I can understand how the presence of others who aren't interested could cause conflict. But to devote an entire server seems a bit over-the-top to me.

I think a better solution would be just to create a guild where this kind of thing is expected and invite interested players to plan activities with.

Indeed, as many do. Including ourselves. The problem then within guild chat is the display of the @handles. But it has now been made clear there is an add-on available that changes that to display character names. Which I was unaware of as I don't usually use any add-ons at all.

It causes grief when people wish to engage in open RP in /say. Why should they be harassed for that?

It would be nice if everyone could respect everyone else's definition of fun, and let them be.

World peace and all that. Very wishful thinking, I know.

Good explanation. I personally don't understand how most people DON'T roleplay, it's just so natural and normal to me. As I run around i wonder what my high elf or argonian must be thinking right now. Like 'wow nice sunset' or 'stupid nord' etc. It's a bit like I imagine living their life, what it must be like you know? To me its weird NOT to do that ;)

I havent found a rp guild yet (don't play much or lack of time) but I still generally roleplay as I go along. Just last night I entered the bank in stonefalls and it was full. So I said *grumbles* its crowded here. Just what my character would say naturally. Replies? Someone emoted taking a dump on the counter and another lolled and made idiotic comments. Just for a random comment I made. Sigh.

I miss the 'good old days' of a rp server on EQ1 with we'll established guilds with rivalries, plots and heck even mini PvP wars between races MD factions. Was such fun.

Jus think of it as theater :)

Exactly, it is a general escape from real life and I love it. It's a shame people reply in that manner. It would so much more fun if people actually played along in terms of character. I don't think anyone in the ES universe would say "Taking a dump on the counter". That's just a shame :(

I like it when NPCs say "Greetings" or "Hail". I usually reply to them in a /say "Well met". I do wonder if players think I am talking to them. It is surprising though how many people do reply in a manner of RP. Could lead on to some fun....and it has done once or twice.

If you are looking for a RP guild and you are a Sorcerer or...Templar, @lioslinn you are welcome to join us. We are a PvE, PvP, RP guild that's based around mages. On EU though.

Would be nice I agree. But as you say, it's not going to happen. There would likely be grief on any server - rather it was devoted to RP players or not. In fact, I imagine many players would join an RP server just so they could berate them.

Would be a lot cheaper just to place rude players on ignore ^^

A roleplaying server would end up a ghost town or filled with non-roleplayers, like they do in virtually every other MMO.

There are plenty of players out there right now who "RP" and several RP guilds ive seen recruiting. I think another "megaserver" is not possible/not going to happen any more than a PvP "megaserver" the whole point to the megasever was to keep a large sum of players active in every zone. You will find even in games that have RP servers there are people who refuse to RP they just chose that server for population etc. reasons.

I played a game long ago in which RP was strictly enforced throughout the entire game. Zero tolerance. Not even one little "I have to logoff and eat dinner now." You had to say it IC; for instance, "I have to take the ferry to the mainland now to meet a friend for dinner." There was a small area in the game world where you could go if you really needed to have an OOC conversation.

    It was so nice. B)

In the Star Wars the Old Republic, Ebon Hawk, the RP server is always standard to heavy load, so no, I don't agree with you at all but I do think taverns should all be one phase.

Uh... you'll have to be more specific by "add-ons designed for lazy people to cheat the system"...
