Destro vs. Resto

I agree with @fissh above me. Have fun, play around, what works for me and what works for someone else is completely different. It all depends on what you want to do.

You do not have to spec what people have suggested. They are only suggestions afterall. I find what I am using is working very well for me, but someone else maybe "pah, I can't use this."

At your level...have fun, Make another Sorcerer and try something else. Level 10 (ish) is not a big sacrifice if you wish to start over.

I'd like to add I love how this game is turning out have many similar, yet different types of mage (and other classes). There are no "Cookie-Cutter-Lay-Waste-To-Everything classes". Everything is viable if used correctly.

The only thing I haven't seen anyone talk about is armor.

You don't really need to wear all 7 pieces of light....and the difference between wearing 5 pieces light & 7 pieces of light is very small.

Your magicka regen should be at least soft capped either way (if not hard capped), so two pieces won't change that.

The spell cost reduction change isn't that big (at max lvl, it's a change of 6% for two pieces) which can be made up with rings/neck/racial skills/etc.

The spell resist, I'll talk about in a second. & you still get prodigy.

The spell pen is nice (at max lvl, 2 pieces is worth 12%)...but spell pen isn't that big of a deal usually (i.e. test weakness to elements, that's 40% spell pen & is barely even noticeable on most mobs in pve.)

So, for a small increase in spell cost (which can be made up) & a reduction in spell pen, you can wear 2 pieces of other armor. i.e. two of the bigger pieces of heavy armor (chest, legs, shoulder, helm)...increasing your armor by quite a lot = you no die as much. Also, you can pick up the +% spell resist passive from heavy armor, which will give almost the same spell resist as two pieces of light + more armor to keep you alive. At high lvls, mixing & matching armor can make some sets much harder to complete, but it makes you more survivable.

I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty new to MMOs and I really don't understand "soft cap" and "hard cap" outside of describing the mushrooms in Morrowind, lol.

Soft cap: The point where diminishing returns starts: In ESO, when your stats turn orange & the game tells you they are overcharged. As long as a stat is, orange you will only receive 50% of additional points for that stat (i.e. adding 10 magicka regen, will only increase your regen by 5).

Hard cap: You have reached the actual max for that stat, additional stat points in this area do nothing for you, you can't get the stat any higher. If you remember skyrim's armor cap, that was a hard cap. Once you reached...was it like 560 or something? additional armor rating points were useless.

Most games have soft/hard caps (not just MMOs, many single player rpgs's have them as well), but I think ESO is one of the first ones to display that to the player. Which is why there are many threads with people raging about overcharging....it is new to them, because they never read any online guide about their other games, they never knew there were caps in their games. i.e. if a player never looked online (and never did any testing themselves), there would be no way for them to know that skyrim had an armor cap, as the game does not display that information & will continue to show armor rating increasing.

Oh, and yeah...all told there is something like 300-400 skill points available. Though to get those you need to complete every skill point quest in all factions, find every skyshard in every zone, complete every dungeon, and gain max rank in pvp (not sure if emperor grants a skill point or not, but other ranks do). For most builds, you will come to a point somewhere probably in your 30s or 40s where you gain skill points and have nothing really to put them in (you have 12 skills you want to use in both bars & all morphed. Available & relevant passives all gained, etc). At low lvls you might feel skill point starved, as there are so many different things that you want to put the point in...at higher lvls, that changes.

and I havent used pets by the way since lvl 20, vr6 now :D

not saying thats the right way to do, I see some sorcerer do two pets at the same time also at my lvl :)

Are those, by chance, the players you have to run in and save because they're dying to a single overworld mob?

I have healer build for my sorc. Going full cloth armor, resto staff. Using crystal, lighting, heavy attack. Repeat.(could add curse which I have now also) Never had an issue. Now I use sword and shield and sorc spells for solo, but resto staff is easier.

Hang in there, level 10 is a tough "age" for a sorc. A resto staff works pretty good for boss fights because the heavy attack generates Magicka which always seems to run out in extended battles.

"Tough age" - ha! I can totally imagine my Argonian storming off through the swamp, yelling over his shoulder, "You're not even my real mom!"

It's a good point though. It's a little too soon for me to really have a good feel for where I want this to go. There are just so many paths for a solo sorc to take.

Personally, I stick to the inferno/flame staff. Simply because of the cheap knockback for cc/survivability. Saved my Resto staff for lvl 15 when I can swap in combat, and only use it in a pinch when solo PvE goes sour, or in a group. Once I hit 50, I will probably re-spec though...

I think that's my problem, I don't really have any CC or knockback on my hotbar right now. It's so hard for me to narrow down these skills to 5.

I play a full healer with CC & pet. Not yet in VR content, but leveling works fine. The key idea is to let your pet tank, use CC if necessary and keep the both of you alive. Also if you heal other players, they will stick around with you and help during public dungeons or harder quest´s.

This isn't a "I am very fast in questing method", but something I also used at SWTOR with my Char & companion. Its a different approach than a damage dealing char, as you don't deal much damage yourself but rely on combat tactics and a strong pet.

Right now the pets seem a bit squishy, so it might no longer work in VR but until then you will have so many skill points that you should be able to adjust.

Its my favorite style of play as a Healer, but you really need to like it else it wont be much joy I guess ;)

My first thought is "zero self healing or damage mitigation skills."

Also the pet. I promise they aren't good. It might help you at these very low levels though so I wouldn't focus on that.

I also want to know if you understand how the Cyrstal Fragment proc works with Endless Fury?

Basically, any cast OTHER THAN Crystal Shard can proc the Fragment. That means spamming Mages Fury can proc the Fragment. As can your other spells on there of course. When the Fragment is ready, your hands glow and there's an audio cue. Cast within 7secs and you'll get an instant knockdown nuke for half the magicka cost.

That skill alone is enough to burst through most content in the game.

Also you should know that you can spam Crystal Shard by repeatedly pressing the button to bypass some of the cast time. You should be 2 shotting most mobs with that.

Really? I mean, I've heard people complain about them, but it seemed like a lot of people on this thread were recommending the Clannfear. But I see what you mean about self healing and damage mitigation. Oh, and yes, I just recently discovered the joys of proccing Fragment!

I also found that Encase complements very well with the Elemental Blockade, as in it will keep the mobs fixed in their place while the elemental effect lasts.

But I've only used it through my last four levels or so (level 16 atm) so I don't know how well it scales up to end-game levels.

EDIT: Forgot to say that it helps more with groups of 2-4 mobs rather than fighting solo mobs like bosses.

EDIT2: I also use the Clannfear, but I'm finding that as levels go up, I'm less dependent on it. The thing is, the pet is a bit dumb: it stays on AoE effects and get distracted easily. It helps with normal mobs, specially melee ones that rush straight to you otherwise.
