Down time length

chrisub17_ESO60
I played this game at launch and just started back up a few days ago playing with my wife. Saw that there was downtime for some issue, but no expected time of completion.

For the been there seen that people on this game, is there any likely expectation of how long this will take?

Is this is a back up in an hour or so, or a come back tomorrow kind of thing?

This is a unique situation. Accidental server meld is not precedented. So there is no average to go by. Just keep an eye on the forums, Gina or Kevin will give us an update as soon as they can. They generally try to keep us informed when they can but right down they've got scrambling devs and programmers at 9 at night. We'll just have to wait and see.

It's a pretty major error that has been encountered, I think. One of those

The fact that you can log onto your live characters on the PTS and have been able to for almost the entire decade ESO has been out indicates that:
    1) they are self-evidently connected at least by a sneakernet if nothing else
    2) this kind of mistake is a once-per-decade issue, if that.

It would depend how much money it saves. It might be a lot. But I'm always suspicious there are people who try to save the company any tiny old amount just so they could stuff their resume with the fact that they saved something, since it's been about 6 months since the last stuffer and they're getting worried about appearing static.

Most games with a test server allow you to copy your characters from live to PTS.

This means they're usually connected *somehow*.

Gina posted an update. ‘Several hours’ of downtime as of this posting.

Disable PTR until backend issue can be resolved.
Rollback NA to before PTR issue today for dupe problem resolution.
Start NA server and let people play while you figure out said PTR issue.

Doesn't seem like a many-hours downtime situation to me. Or at least it shouldn't be. Unless someone also deleted all of the server backups after they used the wrong folder path for the PTR database...

They might want to try and salvage what they can on PC NA. If they let people play in the meantime then they have to merge in changes later, and that’s assuming they don’t need the server off for fixes.

They could be combing through logs to see who got the rare drops so that they can restore those.

They have scheduled maintenance tomorrow so consider this..... Even if they have a way forward tonight, are you going to call in an emergency team this late, pay them overtime and fees to push a new update, and eat the cost, when you can just wait until 3am tomorrow and they will be there anyway. As soon as I realized they had scheduled maintenance tomorrow I booted up my library of 2023 titles I still haven't completed.

You have no idea how long any of those steps takes, nor how long to decide what action to take. Leave it to the people who know what's going on.

Sorry, you're right. I'll leave it to the people who know what's going on. My previous idea to do it all myself was clearly a hasty decision.

the maintenance tomorrow is for the website and the store, its not the same as the game servers, and likely not the same team.

This one doesn't allow you to. It copies them and erases them for you, according to the devs' schedule.

They copy NA characters to PTS for the first two weeks of a major update, then they erase the PTS database and copy over the EU characters.

The connection should only be one way, i.e. the copy goes from live to PTS. Nothing should be sent back the other way.

What happened here seems to be that the PTS was actually using the live database instead of the PTS copy.

Can we at least please have assurances that we won't miss a daily login bonus? I would have logged in much earlier this PM but had to work late. I don't want to miss any of the goodies! @ZOS_GinaBruno can you please help out/clarify for the FOMO crowd over here? Thanks so much.

its never as simple as it seems, and when something on this scale happens, you want to find the issue so that it doesn't happen again. Its entirely possible that the issue is actually on the live server end.
