Aye this is very frustrating, but luckily the game changes your default layout to US every so often, so you don't even have those scandi letters (and layout) available to begin with! ;)

Fun fact to you US; 96% of the people are foreigners...

Much love to my European and elsewhere friends that need unicode support.

That it works in /bug and the like is a bigger kick to the jimmies.

    And *hugs AngryNord*

To the haters kvetching about foreign languages in chat... shut it. It can happen regardless and Im developing an unnatural desire to start singing obnoxious Swedish pop in /zone now.

Swedish players should be able to use their characters, just as German, French and Spanish players can use theirs.

Actually, Spanish can't. We use the same letters an English native uses, except for "ñ", which is not supported, so we have to commit grammar aberrations while talking to each other.

In our case, it's just one single letter and it makes our communication a little bit limited, I cannot imagine what other languages are suffering.
Sorry to hear that, didn't know spanish players were suffering too :'(

On a more general note, I think it would be a good idea to add some more language specific channels. Currently, we have /enzone, /dezone and /frzone, and though these channels aren't used a lot (people seem to prefer the general /zone chat for more visibility, regardless of language), I think they could become more of a success if people had such channels at least for the major languages of Europe, e.g. including Russian (with Cyrillic support, of course), Spanish, Italian, and the Scandinavian languages (maybe a common channel like /nordzone for Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian would be acceptable? As far as I know, these languages are more or less mutually intelligible - I know, Icelandic and Faroese are more difficult...). Maybe it would then become more customary to actually use these channels.

What do they mean? Are those actual additional letters, like the English 26 in the alphabet plus some extras in those languages?

They are foreign letters, they have different sounds to english letters, but if like me you don't speak say Norwegian then you don't need them, but other players do. It's like trying to write without using the letter H, is possible, but awkward.

Well I don't speak Norweigian, and I know I know need them...but it would still be interesting to know what they mean.

That special N the Spanish can't use? It's sort of an nyah sound. Instead of like Nee no for Nino, with the special N it's pronounced Neen yo.

Danish people use the same æÆøØåÅ letters and we have the same issue, on BOTH servers. It is kinda strange as those letters are part of the standard ASCII table AND Unicode Character Sheet.

This is a pretty stupid issue to be forced to bring to the boards to get help with. Once again I question the purpose of beta testing if they can't even pick up on the fact that they left letters out of someone's alphabet especially since they even have nords in game. That is not very professional. On a lighter side it would make for some pretty funny chat conversations.

Well for starters ñ, ø, å dont work. And some words mean different things with different letters, such as the various forms of words. I can think of three in Swedish off the top of my head.

Anyone know if non-phonecian alphabets work? I feel sorry for the players that want to type in their own alphabet. They don't have a good way to type in chat. Although romanization would probably work in this case, it would be a hassle for the Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, etc. typers.

I'm sorry but there is already an issue with people writing in other languages than English in general chats. I believe having cyrilics and other such characters in the general chat in addition to people spamming like crazy in French and German, would be to the detriment of the game.

I understand there are no servers designated for other languages but we should keep the public channels to English.

Yes, I know you maybe don't intend to spam general chat with norwegian but people will do that anyway. Next up, people with names in scandinavian letters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31g0YE61PLQ

I say let people use their language(s) to communicate in zone/group/guild chat, doesn't bother me one bit. My only concern is having to find other players I may have befriended that used these letters in their name and not being able to send a friend/group invite at a later point in time; because I neglected to send a friend invite (reason being, I was a düñdérhæd :s ) when we were grouped.

That doesnt fix that the letters just dont work. Alt codes dont work in the US English layout(which is how you get them when they arent on the keyboard).

Theres a lot of difference in those letters. Slå != sla.

Transliteration should not be necessary when ä and ë work but å does not.

My question for Germans.. does ß work? Havent tried.

Spanish "Ñ/ñ" is phonetically eɲe/ énye. It can also be phonetically written like "gn" (in french).

The letter was derived from "nn" in old spanish (remember game "anno 1503"?) and its usually transcribed as "ny" in english for hispanic-origin words like canyon (like the "Great Canyon", name given by spanish explorers arrived to arizona after Colon).

As its been already said, its used for a wide variety of words such as damage/daño, tab/pestaña, kid/niñ@, mountain/montaña, wrist/muñeca, year/año....

This is caused when you press shift+ALT on your keyboard. Has nothing to do with the ingame chat.

I am disappointed by this, as well. Not only does it affect Scandinavians, but my ability to write in seo Ænglisce sprǣc is unavailable. The lack of Old English support in a fantasy MMO is nigh unbearable. You can have all your Dominion elves with quite obvious Quenya and Sindarin names, but no love for the Saxons? For shame. (As an aside, Elvish female names ending in -ie should be properly spelled -ïe; e.g. Endarïe, with the diæresis needed to obtain the correct pronunciation of 4 syllables, not 3.)

BTW, there is something devious and ironic about a game which features an entire zone, and race (skyrim/nords) heavily influenced by Scandinavian culture, but those of us who can say proudly that "Jag pratar lite svenska" are unable to communicate with others. Jag förstår inte why these characters can be used in bug reports, but not in chat. :(

    Regards,

A Tolkien fan who speaks a bit of Swedish.
