Those who spend money on the game, buying subs, crowns and whatnot, keep the game alive.
More earnable mounts would be cool, but over the years we got a few free mounts too, so those who have been playing this game for longer surely have a good amount of mounts without buying one single crate.

✭✭Between 10 to 20Just counted: 11. Imperial horse from Imperial Editon (Dec 2015 sale), a basic crown store woof (eso+ crowns), and picked up one cheaper endeavour mount for Companion use because I felt it was unusually ugly. Two indriks and the pigeon skinned senche are from event collectibles and rest are from rewards from login and whatever. I have not bothered to farm mounts because my chars all use the basic woof.

Not necessarily. There's several ways to get mounts without paying real money. In addition to the brown horse which is now a level up reward there's 3 you can buy from stables, several from events (9 indriks if I remember correctly, and 2 quasigriffs), at least 1 from an achievement, 1 from an antiquity collection, at least 2 given away in promotions, and maybe others I'm forgetting. On top of that you can get any that have been in crown crates using Seals of Endeavour.
So someone could end up with quite a few mounts without spending real money on them.
Also there's nothing wrong with choosing to buy additional items in a game that has on-going development, including numerous free updates. 4 from level up / buyable from stable
3 trial trifecta mounts
1 antiquity mount
3 from free crates (1 from Twitch crate, 2 from monthly log in crates)
4 from monthly log in rewards
3 via Prime gaming
1 from some old promotion linked to the ES card game
2 radiant apex mounts bought with seals of endeavor
1 apex from gems saved from free Twitch crates
