Those who spend money on the game, buying subs, crowns and whatnot, keep the game alive.
More earnable mounts would be cool, but over the years we got a few free mounts too, so those who have been playing this game for longer surely have a good amount of mounts without buying one single crate.
Since seals are a thing, plenty of people,myself included, where able to unlock otherwise expensive mounts too.

Just counted: 11. Imperial horse from Imperial Editon (Dec 2015 sale), a basic crown store woof (eso+ crowns), and picked up one cheaper endeavour mount for Companion use because I felt it was unusually ugly. Two indriks and the pigeon skinned senche are from event collectibles and rest are from rewards from login and whatever. I have not bothered to farm mounts because my chars all use the basic woof.

Each of my characters has their own ''canon'' mount so I never go out of my way to get more unless one comes out that suits one of my characters better than their current one which hasn't happened in awhile. Most of the ones I have were for free/from events/came with preordering stuff.

Not necessarily. There's several ways to get mounts without paying real money. In addition to the brown horse which is now a level up reward there's 3 you can buy from stables, several from events (9 indriks if I remember correctly, and 2 quasigriffs), at least 1 from an achievement, 1 from an antiquity collection, at least 2 given away in promotions, and maybe others I'm forgetting. On top of that you can get any that have been in crown crates using Seals of Endeavour.

So someone could end up with quite a few mounts without spending real money on them.

Also there's nothing wrong with choosing to buy additional items in a game that has on-going development, including numerous free updates. Especially when you can choose which of those items you want to buy and simply skip any which don't appeal to you.

To add to your list, the mount from the Twitch drops which has been around for years, the trial mounts and at least 2 mounts who has been monthly rewards.

I don't know, but it's way more than I'd ever use. I only ever use one, so the rest just sit there never used. I might actually use 3-5 of them on a regular basis.

Honestly, I don’t know. I hardly ever use them anyway. Most of them came from crown crates (I didn’t want them either, I just wanted a costume or body marking). Pity I can’t give them to someone.

Low teens, I think? All those free horses add up. I got 2 or 3 from free crates, back when they were given out. And I've gotten one event-collection mount (the ice indrik).

But I've only ever used two - plain black horse on all my characters, except my Nord ice Sorc, who uses the Indrik.

Apparently exactly 20, but I only use about half of them. Like some other people here, each of my characters has a canon default mount, and some such as the basic guar and camel I will use situationally for certain regions.

Edit to add: Really wish your personal names for mounts and pets could be character-specific! Some of my characters use the same mount but it's not intended to be the same individual creature.

In April 2022, I had 194 mounts.

Today, I have 335 mounts.

In the past 1.5 years, I've collected 141 additional mounts or approximately 94 mounts per year.

So this made me curious. Turns out I have 71 total.

As best as I can recall, at least 33 of them were "free":

11 from event (9 Indriks, 2 Quasigriffs)
4 from level up / buyable from stable
3 trial trifecta mounts
1 antiquity mount
3 from free crates (1 from Twitch crate, 2 from monthly log in crates)
4 from monthly log in rewards
3 via Prime gaming
1 from some old promotion linked to the ES card game
2 radiant apex mounts bought with seals of endeavor
1 apex from gems saved from free Twitch crates

I am sure there are more that I forget as well. The rest were either from special editions/some dlc, or crates (mostly bought with gold).
