100% Upgrade Chance in Blacksmithing Failed

I've had this happen to me a few times now and I am wondering if this is by design or of it is a bug.

I'm at level 50 with Blacksmithing. I have all the points necessary placed into every skill.

Often times when I go to upgrade an item I have crafted, I can select all the necessary items to make that upgrade 100% and yet it still FAILS to upgrade.

This has happened with Honing Stones, Dwarven Oil, and Grain Solvent so far.

When it happens with Honing Stones...it bothers me but I let it slide as I have hundreds of them.

When it happens with Dwarven Oil, it annoys me quite a bit as I do not have a lot of these.

When it happens with Grain Solvent, it downright pisses me off.

When an upgrade fails, I not only lose the item in question but I lose any number of upgrade items in the failure process.

100% is 100%. I'm sorry if there is some sort of hidden, mysterious, game-world math going on here, but if I'm guaranteed an upgrade to succeed by using the required materials, it darn well better succeed. If it truly IS less than 100% no matter HOW much upgrade material I use, then the tool-tip needs to be changed to reflect that.

If this ever happens when I go to upgrade using Tempering Alloy...someone is going to die for this mistake...it might be the random NPC standing next to me that I bash his head in with my BS hammer...but SOMEONE WILL DIE if I lose 10 TEMPERING ALLOY attempting to upgrade a piece of Vet 10 gear (yes, Vet 10 gear requires 10 Temp. Alloy to upgrade to Legendary, PER PIECE)

Does anyone else have this happen to them with Blacksmithing or other crafting skills?

It happens with all crafting professions.

Sometimes it fails because for some unknown reason even if you pick the upgrades it will reset and you don't notice it. Other times even with the items locked in place it will still fail.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

@Siliconhobbit_ESO, I agree it's crass for the game to claim a 100% success chance and then you fail.

I think the game just makes a number of attempts equal to the number of improvement mats you use.

IE. if you use 5 Honing stones (supposedly 100%) it just does 5 attempts at 20% and if any work you get the improvement.

And I agree this isn't 100% and shouldn't be called so, if it says 100% then it should actually be 100%.

I have noticed that my selection on amount of improvement items resets. So let's say I want to make an item green, I choose 3 Honing Stones. But before I can even create the image I have noticed the amount of Honing Stones being put back to 1.

Try and keep an eye out and see if this is what happens to you as well.

I had that issue too, for clothing. I wanted to upgrade a jack to blue, but despite the 100% chance it failed. And as it consumed only 1 embroidery, I guess it must have reset itself somewhere in the process.

I think whoever was writing the code for this mistakenly put an '<' where it should say '=<'.

As a gamer whose focus is mainly on crafting/gathering, I am very interested to see an official response on this.

    Not
    =<

    , but
    <=

    .
At least in C, C++, Java, etc.

I'm a crafter too, though I stick to making mostly greens and saving up the upgrading mats for later on. I usually give it a try at lower than 100% success rate and have had a couple of fails, but I'm worried if what OP says is true. I'm putting skill points into the upgrading skill so I can go for 100% on blues/purples/golds with fewer mats, but if it's not real 100% then it's grossly misleading. Any CS rep wanna pitch in?
