reconstructing an item to an exact trait that you didn't have should have a cost.
Be nice if we had a gold option for reconstruction in addition to the transmute crystals.

This is my answer as well. If you reconstruct to the trait it had on it when you got it, then the cost should be minimal. But if you change the trait, then there should be a decent cost associated with that. I'd even add a cost to reconstruct a piece of armor you got as light, into medium or heavy. Farming for weights is much more of a pain to me than farming for traits, and I'd happily pay crystals to be able to change that.

Being able to change the weight would break the games balance, as some sets would be way overpowered if they were medium instead of light (for example)
There are like 4 sets in the game that come in multiple weights.

All the monster sets come in multiple weights. And I do not see how altering weights would "break the game's balance". Can you describe an instance where this would occur?

Monster helms are curated. At most you have to run the dungeon 3 times to get all 3 of them. (You have an argument for shoulders, always have advocated that there should be a 10-20 key "curated" monster shoulder box, leaving the 1 and 5 key ones uncurated)
The meta right now is to wear as much medium armor as possible for the passive bonuses it gives to players, yet many of the best DPS sets are light armor, being able to reconstruct those in medium weight would increase their power significantly.
