Very long maintenance times.

This is the first mmo i have played where "regular" maintenance takes 4+ hours, i have played quite a few mmo's but this by far has the longest maintenance i have ever seen. Anybody know why it takes so long or has any other games that takes longer for regular maintenance?

all of this downtime cant be helped the game is new so are the servers , you cant put all the blame on the game . example every month Microsoft does a update so in many cases we all have to do update then all the other companys do the same like flash player etc to many to list .
so in time it will get faster but every game has to have the updates and every time new software is made it brings many new issues , take a new phone all singing and dancing how many have problems so have patience it will come out in a wash

it is interesting that the american down time is less than eu for same changes.

Not really. Basicly they are trying to compensate/"fix" the EU latency issues because they still haven't moved the EU servers to EU like it should have been from launch.

Because for mericans it will always be like MERICA >>>>>>>> eu

    period.

I am ok to wait even a week of maintenance, if only they would fix things.

I played WoW for many years, including this year, and the regular Wednesday maintenance was (and still is) from 05:00 to 11:00 CET. Sometimes it was finished by 10:00. So that is 5-6 hours ... and as an extremely successful MMO, I think WoW is a good benchmark to compare with.

Must not have played many mmos then, These downtimes are nothing compared to wow.

I'd rather have them take hours and fix quests, tweak skills and so on than take 1 hour and cause more problems than fix them.

But then again, so many games were launched and patched introducing bugs and problems rather than fixing them :D
mDKs still need a lot of love!

imo the best maintenance is EVE-Online, daily about 15 Mins at Lunch CEST, except when new release

At least keep us updated, the last update was 2 hours ago stating they were doing the last step before bringing the servers on line. Communication please, even if its just sorry we still don't know.

I don't care for WoW, never liked that. Compared to any other MMO, and I have played lots since '99 5+ hours of maintainance twice a week are way off for a payed online service. I don't care for the reason, it is just too long for maintainance anyway!

It does raise a question at times. For the amount of (announced) fixes the downtimes seem to un-proportionally long, raising a question "why the heck are the downtimes so long for so little return" or "what kind of stealth fixes are going in which weren't announced and cause such long downtimes".

i agree! Eve has the shortest and consistent maintenance times in all mmo ive played in.It's daily but doesnt last for more than an hour except during patches.

Why can't american company beat Icelander company on efficiency?

Exactly what i think. A good maintenace example i can think of is mortal online which had maintenace everyday but it only took 15-20 mins.

So yeah I have played plenty of MMOs including WoW, Rift, Aion, EvE, Fallen Earth, SW:TOR, Ragnarok 2, quite a few of the perfect world series, and 5 hours could be classed as a normal down time for a patch day such as this.

However the thing what gets me the most s that they say were on the final stage just testing and an hour later it still isn't back up, there has been no news of what's happening or anything and the US servers from what I gather didn't take this long to go back up. So it would be nice to be kept updated if they have come across some issues or something to delay the servers going live again.

Did you never play SWTOR, WoW or Warhammer?

Its a pretty standard procedure to take down the servers and do patching and stuff, 4 hours is actually at the low end as for instance Blizzard needs 8 hours and this involves a game down for all their games during the maintenance ;)

Servers are in Texas, right? 6.00 a.m. CEST is 11.00 p.m. Texas time. Meaning they start working on the EU-server late in the evening, work all night and do the stability tests in the wee hours of morning, kind of with a "*** of gravel" in their eyes. I would find it really hard to be efficient under those circumstances. The interesting question is why do Zenimax insist on doing maintenance during these hours? It's not like it's the least inconvenient hours for us, is it?

yes they have some good downtimes now, but they have also in the past have some problems ( anyone experience the boot.ini ??? ).
But I am not sure that you can compare downtimes for a game that has been alive for 11 years ( and it is 11 years today ) with something totally new, and it is the companies first MMO also. Plus the serverstructure may also be different in the games, which could also explain some of the difference in times.
