Do people really fret the cost of Wayshrines/teleports?

Look at the cost of traveling to a way shrine as a tax on mobility... and who would not want to get out of paying taxes... it's really not the cost, but the principle of the thing... why pay when you don't need to.
Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most...

I recall outside of Sugar Bowl Suite next to wayshrine when I'm in hurry but not hurry enough to pay skipping one extra loadscreen.
If I'm not in hurry I slow travel to nearest wayshrine and pick some nodes I pass by.

For me, it's just seeing the amount I've probably saved.

Example: suppose I would only ever port using gold once per day on average. Very achievable with my playstyle. Also assume I have always, since 2014, has the passive that lowers gold port cost to 73. Finally, also assume I never port when the cost is jacked up, only ever minimized.

    Given these constraints, that's

    73 gold x 365 days, or 26,645 a year. Since 2014, that'd be 239,805 gold.

Roughly 240,000 gold in the most underestimated charitable version of the maths. Just change a few variables slightly, and it starts to look way crazier.

146 gold once, 750 gold for the second each day for a year.

    896 x 365 comes out to 327,040 gold.

I'm still not level 40 yet and I've made almost 200k gold just from leveling and selling some drops I found along the way. I can't see the argument of saving 300k gold over the course of 9 long years!! I been playing for a little over a week and by the time 2 weeks has gone by, I'll have made that much and I'm not even trying. I have to imagine that a fully leveled player with some common dungeon dropped gear could make that much in a couple of days. Certainly not stressing over the course of 9 long years??

I hear the echo from a lot of people about the load screens. That is something I had not thought of, but on my PC at least, they are pretty fast, but I know everyone's setup is different and I don't know how long it takes on console. I will say that the addon called Beam me up has been a tremendous help as well. Especially considering I still don't have every map explored and many of the shrines are still dark for me.

the amount of savings would really depend on how often you are trying to port

more porting (like if you were knocking out a bunch of treasure maps/surveys) might save you quite a bit

using beam me up ive saved about 750k (i dont remember the exact amount but it was still showing under 1 mil for me lol) in probably the last 4 years at least

as others noted, it only counts this cost if you port to a player, not porting to a house since house porting is always free, so its possibly between porting to houses and that ive saved over 1 mil in gold

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (fully filled out with current game), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

in progress: acquiring mundus stones (currently only have the thief)

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

As a certified penny pincher, I simply refuse to pay the cost. Heck, I won't even repair my gear at an NPC. It gets repaired with the repair kits I get from doing my daily writs, or it doesn't get repaired at all.

In contrast however, I'll occasionally do a master writ whose material cost would make the most hardened of veteran players weep and scream why at me simply for my own entertainment, so there's that.

My load screens are like 5 secs.

    Aren't everyone's load screens 5 seconds?

I never have 5 second load screens, usually 10-15, frequently more like 30. I live in a third world country as far as internet goes, Australia.

In response to the original question, I baulk at anything over 200 gold for fast travel because it's an unnecessary waste of gold. I have all of the gold purchasable houses and the ability to port outside of them makes it so easy to avoid wayshrine fees.

    [snip]

No need to have slow internet, one can have it fast while their harddrive is slow.
When I had an old PC with harddrive an 15 Mbit internet , my loading screens could have lasted even a minute or longer, now having new Samsung Evo SSD and 600 Mbit fiber cable, I'm happy with 4-5 seconds.

PS: "Do people really fret the cost of Wayshrines/teleports?"
I do, that's one way to save gold, if you wish to be a millionaire one day :) .

guess coming from other games that has wayshrine/port costs, it never really bothered me. not the richest player either, i tend to have 300k between each character I play. (only have 15 character slots filled)

It's only expensive if you keep porting around during the cool-down time because the tax is cumulative.
PS - The green passive makes porting really cheap: with the maximized passive it's like 73g in the 1st porting.

If your platform has a SSD it is but not everyone has SSDs on their platforms.

Theres no real gold sinks in this game. All long time players have 10s, if not hundreds of millions in bank. You get gold by simply playing the game and it just piles up. The only thing you can do with it is buy crowns as most expensive stuff is crowns only. Next patch we are finally getting a house purchasable with gold, but even that is only 1.3 mil.

Yeah no. Almost 8 years and my bank holds just 2.15 million. If I had 10m, I'd be extremely happy. If I had a hundred million I wouldn't know what to do with myself.

Those veteran players you're talking about got those millions by playing the Guild Trader Market, not the game itself.

If I am close to a wayshrine I will head over to it and use it, but if I'm not then I either port to a house that is near a wayshrine or just eat the cost. I have more gold than I'll ever spend so I don't worry about it any more.

No way, the load screen are heavy depending on hard drive. If I move game off the SSD then it's at least 45 secs or more on same device.

It use to be a gold sink like mount training and still is to a point with new players. I remember around launch I was in Stonefall. Missed like the whole lower half and was getting shards. I was porting around then suddenly was out of gold.
