Free crates are free crates. Expect nothing more than a couple of gems and if you’re lucky your expectations will be exceeded. If not… it’s still some free gems.

They are gamble boxes, and there are only two of them. Way more than two are needed to get the better prizes, on average. If they wanted people to have a better chance to get the really good stuff, they would give out a lot more of them as a daily reward.

For a while, they had a special "preview" crate that gave a guaranteed pet. They were a different loot pool than a "full" crate.

Yep. These aren't preview crates, which are samples of an upcoming, new crate season; the Xanmeer season first dropped in December 2018.
These will be regular crates. But that also very likely means that there won't be a guaranteed pet, like preview crates.
UNLESS they've purposely manipulated the loot pool for these.

What you're remembering are the "preview" crates, which had 1 of 4 different pets in them and weren't really representative of what was in the full crate that came out a couple weeks later. The pets in those crates would later go on sale individually in the crown store, and weren't even in the full crates themselves.

The Xanmeer Crates are full-on crown crates and have the full pool of available items in them as normal. So naturally, what you're actually going to get is crown poisons, food and maybe a dye stamp.

Read the tool tip on the crates in the calendar. I forget what it says exactly, and I'm not in the game right now, but it does say something about two guanteed rewards.

Says 4, which are the 4 cards you get, with a chance for a 5th.

It's going to be a normal crown crate. You should expect a pet to keep your expectations low, but at least there's a small chance you'll get something better, unlike the free preview crates where you can't get anything else at all.

This is a vnice looking month compared to the usual. Started off with 10k gold and halfway through 150K AP! That is fairly huge esp to non-PVP regulars. Plus the 2 crates and other bits and bobs which I can usually find uses for B)

I'm glad that they changed the daily rewards based off feedback from players, including myself. The repair kits and small bits of currency are much more universally useful than the crown drinks and soul gems we used to get more often. I no longer have any complaints about the daily rewards, it shaped up into something that is pretty much what I envisioned. A small reward that is useful to everyone and not just new players who will take the drinks because they are better than nothing.

Why does the fact that something is "free" absolve it of any criticism?

Especially when it's not given in good faith, it's given with expectations - it's marketing, it's not charity or benevolence.

Let's at least be wise enough to see it for what it is, and not pretend otherwise.

It is random. such is the nature of probability there is no guarantee of what you will get in the crate.
I have a mount I got from a free crate years ago.

Before that we had the Dwarven Crates where it seemed like almost every one included a Bal Foyen Nix-Hound as one of the items.

(Or just search for crown crates and nix hound to get more threads, there's a lot.)

That was one of the first crate's to be given away for free (I think that was to ESO+ subscribers during a free trial, not in login rewards) so it drew even more attention to it than otherwise. For a long time people were joking that every crown crate would include a nix-hound, even if it wasn't on the list of possible drops.

I'm 100% in favor of free crates for monthly rewards, but people should have tempered expectations. When it's Crate day, every zone and guild will have messages about someone who got an Apex reward lol. But the chance is less than 1% I believe. Check out the numbers on crowncrates dot com.

See this ^ is why we don't have nice things. We used to get these crown crates regularly in the monthly reward calendars so that the meager amount of crown gems we DID get from them were actually useful over time and I managed to pick up a few of my still favorite mounts today using them. Then people complained just like you are and they took them away completely for what feels like years now, and doled out drivel rewards of food and poisons that I usually have to copy and paste 'DESTROY' on as I drop them out of my inventory.

At the end of the day we all know its a crown crate, the BIG rewards are clearly not guaranteed because it is a RNG mechanic with no pity system that even the most gacha of games have these days, but it still progresses your currency towards SOMETHING rather than nothing at all, so please.. stop speaking for people that DO like when they give these out.

      love is love

And they used to do so in the past. I got a great mount with 400 gems amassed via free crates, back before the best mounts were elevated to a "radiant apex" category.

Back around the Morrowind release, they used to give proper crown crates. I got a couple of Apex mounts out of them, so my apologies for helping shut that down quick smart.
