You can get the loot box back if you don't go too far from the cake or switch zones. I tested that three times this event. If you have autoloot set on, though, it automatically takes your tickets for you, so they're added to your account and lost if over cap. Then you don't get the loot box back, since there's no loot left.

I hope support can give you at least some tickets back, but in the meantime I'd check your autoloot settings.
