Can you stop calling us adventurers please?

Noticed an npc in Galen screaming "adventurers wanted!" today and just cringed. Again. Not as hard as I cringe everytime that Murkmire women screams "DO YOU LIKE ADVENTURE? HAVE I GOT AN ADVENTURE FOR YOU!" at me. But still.... 🙄

It's such an embarrasing, cover all term to describe everyone that really describes no one.

Even if they did replace adventurer, it would be replaced by another catch all like mercenary, traveler or something similar. Don't think it'd make much of a difference myself.

We are Adventurers though? what should they call us? Former vestige? Ex-Molags doll? 6th companion?

    What would you prefer?

What should these people call the type of person they're looking for? They want someone who is willing and able to travel to a distant location to help with a dangerous problem, but they're otherwise not fussy about who it is - they're not going to the Fighters Guild or the Mages Guild or whatever specifically, they're open to anyone who is interested giving it a go. What's a convenient catch-all term for that type of person, other than adventurer?

I'm genuinely asking BTW, because I can't think of anything else. Even within my own characters there isn't a word that would accurately describe all of them. One is pretty much a mercenary, but another would probably refuse anything advertised as mercenary work. One is a retired soldier who doesn't want to get involved in anything but sometimes finds it hard to say no to people in need. Two are very much adventurers - they'll go anywhere and do anything so long as it sounds interesting and isn't murder. One will travel for contracts but only if they are murders. And so on.

Ugly beast? Nondescript *insert race*? Stinking mortal (that has been used by many dremora)? Hopefully nothing flirtatious...

It's funny you bought this up because that's exactly what they do in base game content. They comment on things I've actually done. "Davons Watch would have been overrun if you hadn't been there!" etc. There are dozens of other examples you hear everywhere but I can't remember them verbatim right now.

Anyways "Stranger". Stranger works well. Or "you".

But really, I'll settle for anything that doesn't trigger Murkmire cringe PTSD.

Or they could be like that guy in Summerset who just yells "Work for outsiders!"

My husband finds that one funny, he says the only reason the guy isn't yelling "Jobs no one here wants to do!" is because it'd be too long.

Better 'adventurer' than 'assistant', thanks Neramo. Or worse yet, 'Lady Arabelle's assistant' as the denizens of High Isle liked to call you. Now that was some top tier cringe.

Outsiders isn't great but I'm fine with it. As long as any npc who yells that at me has an option for me to reply with something along the lines of "I'm a High Elf too you ass, we went to school together"

I only got through the first story mission in High Isle because the writing seemed so bad. I'll get back to it eventually.

I prefer "adventurer" to "mercenary", at least it sounds somewhat neutral and doesn't imply too many things about the character.

The writing in High Isle doesn't get any better. It makes even the worst writing in previous chapters seem like literature masterpieces.
Firesong felt a good bit better in that regard, though it's annoying to be constantly called "mercenary" which didn't fit my character at all throughout that DLC.

I'd prefer it if they called us by name, but then that would beg the question of how they knew our name in the first place.

Adventurer works fine for me, it's an accurate enough description for what we do in a game like ESO.

Tbh I rather been called an adventurer than a comrade (like in Leyawiin for example while doing crafting dailies)

The other problem is then it highlights that this is a quest specifically for the player character, which might fit sometimes but too much of it gets a bit odd. I prefer the idea that a lot of these people are looking for anyone who will help them and you just happen to be the one they find.

I agree that adventurer is a good choice. When my character gets called vestige, mercenary, apprentice or outlander - that is when we cringe.

Although my character would prefer adventuress, she accepts that adventurer covers her as well.

'Adventurer' is probably the best term to describe most of the player characters with a single word.

Yeah... it doesn't. I wish they had just gone all-in on the Breton stuff instead of shoehorning the Alliance leaders in (and making it incredibly obvious leader they favor).

At least Galen and Firesong were incredible, but I can't bring myself to do the epilogue. Za'ji's just hanging out with "Five-claw! I have news!" and I just can't.

They could use more often the fact that we and the NPCs are sometimes of the same race and sometimes not.

Being called Dryskin by an argonian when you're playing an argonian is hearthreaking, for exemple. And some NPCs do take that in consideration and change a bit their voicelines, but most don't care at all.

Well, adventuring does not allow for the most fastidious skincare.

... anyway, I agree with your point, there are several quest dialogs that get painful to listen to, with the NPCs not accounting for the character's race. Example, the quest for Sathram Plantation on Stonefalls, as a Khajiit.

I don’t mine being called that. I can’t stand the constant “YOU THERE!!!!!” from a finger-pointing NPC.
