How do I report bad character names now?

I've noticed this for a while but want to get an answer. When I select F while hovering over a person to report player (for reporting a name), there is no option anymore for reporting a bad character name. There are options for bullying, harassment, toxic behavior etc. but nothing about names, how do I do this these days? Please give me an answer instead of giving me your opinion on whether I should be doing this, thanks in advance!

Can you give a full list of the available options? Been awhile since I reported a name.

Unless someone's name if racist, homophobic, transphobic or ableist, I hope people don't report names.

    Such as cheeky puns etc.

I very rarely report names, it has to be something very inappropriate for me to do so, I think I've only done it three times since 2016... besides, it just makes ZOS aware of it, it's up to them decide if it breaks ToS.

I mean... why would you do that though? How often do you report people for you to notice this?

You could perhaps use the bullying/harassment/etc option ? Depending on the name the player chose, it might be construed as harassment of other players.

    Sexist too.

Anyway, I've reported a person for making references to sexual harrassment in their name. I think I sent an in-game support mail.

The option should be there. That said, it should be rarely used. If I had to guess... I suspect they removed it because (1) space limitations and (2) over used.

Before players submit a report, there should be an info page that pops up. Like, “Are you sure? Reporting players isn’t a game, and should only be used for…….. blah blah……. And not for……. blah blah.” or something similar.
Not as a deterrent, but just more clarity about what is appropriate for reporting, and what’s nonsense, and what each reporting category is for exactly.

I had to report someone’s character name once because they cleverly got around any filter to make a name insinuating the act/word that rhymes with grape. 🤷‍♀️

8 years never ever even thought about reporting a name.Is this a thing? I know players being mass reported in pvp for being a better player....shame on them!

If the name is not bullying, harrassment or toxic behavior, then it should not be reported. If it is, you have your category.

How about don't report names unless they're blatantly offensive or vulgar?

Maybe they got rid of it because too many people were reporting names that didn't warrant reporting.

Someone can get potentially banned for something they paid for, so I'd really reflect on why a name that you'll only see in passing is bad enough for that. I've seen some offensive names and just move on - I don't let it affect me. I can see if it's overtly hateful, but I've seen so many cases where it's just something cheeky. I personally don't see the point.

I've reported a name once - only because the person was being insulting to me for wanting a real healer. Other than that, it doesn't affect me. There should be a toxicity option there, that's what I used when it was truly warranted.

It's still in there under the toxicity option - profane name/ID.

    1. can we get this moved to "players helping players"
    2. there are many valid reasons to report names, the filter in this game can't account for every þôśṡíḃíŀíẗý

Or you could just not worry about another player's name unless it's just straight up threatening you and enjoy the game.

I've never understood why people worry about it so much. But yes I've recently become a lot more annoyed by it as one of guilds had to change our name. Somebody reported Bal-Busters...you know as in Molag Bal Busters....had been the name for since like 2015, but now suddenly somebody was offended by Bal....

Like ZoS should just straight up remove Molag Bal from the game now.

I've reported a couple of names because they were racist or explicitly sexual in a homophobic way. I believe in dealing with toxicity rather than just turning my back.

Greetings, as we've removed a few non-constructive comments around baiting, please remember that while it’s all right to disagree or even debate with each other, provoking conflict, baiting, inciting, mocking, etc. is never acceptable in the official The Elder Scrolls Online community.
    • Trolling or Baiting: The act of trolling is defined as something that is created for the intent to provoke conflict, shock others, or to elicit a strong negative or emotional reaction. It’s okay and very normal to disagree with others, and even to debate, but provoking conflict, baiting, inciting, mocking, etc. is never acceptable in the official The Elder Scrolls Online community. If you do not have something constructive or meaningful to add to a discussion, we strongly recommend you refrain from posting in that thread, and find another discussion to participate in instead. It is also not constructive or helpful to publicly call out others and accuse them of trolling, or call them a troll—please refrain from doing so. If you genuinely believe someone is trolling, please report the post or thread to the ESO Team, and leave it at that.
Also, we have decided to move this thread to a category we think is more appropriate for this topic. If there may be any questions in regards to the rules, please feel free to review them here.

    Thank you for your understanding.

@ZOS_Icy is there any chance that you can offer guidance to the OP's question since it's an account/rules/reporting question?

I just checked the interface on PC EU, using keyboard and mouse - bring up the interaction wheel and it's at the top of the wheel for me, then you get this menu:
    22xgxvyozzc8.png

    Impact: report player
    Category: bad language/toxicity
    Subcategory: profane name/UserID

I have only ever reported one player for their name, which was a slang term for a paedophile - they deserved it.

I like that it says "Profane Name/UserID" because I'm suspecting a lot of people are getting reported for non-profane names like "references pop culture" or "not lore friendly" or nonsense like that.

And yes I know I'm pushing my luck, but passive aggression is all I got left.

To stay on topic, I've seen a handful of thinly veiled racist, and poor taste names. Like posters said above you can put your cursor over them and use the interact wheel to pick your poison.

Sorry to all the Dilly-Do T Bagginses out there who get reported but some folks don't like seeing it. if its questionable why risk it?

Because everything is going to be questionable to at least one person. "Some folks don't like seeing it" doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong with the name. Some people don't like seeing names that don't fit the Elder Scrolls lore, some don't like seeing any non-roleplay names, some don't like the silly names some people give their khajiits.

And I'm being very general here because it depends on the name.

To me, if it's not profanity or pretty blatantly offensive I don't care. I enjoy the clever humor some players come up with.

It honestly feels like a type of benevolent bullying when a harmless name gets reported and causes problems for the person being reported. I say this from personal experience. Perhaps the company is trying to crack down on the players who have made a mini-game out of the practice?

I haven't reported anybody, but I have whispered to players whose name grossly violates the developers rules to let them know somebody might end up reporting them. Sometimes folk think things are funny that really aren't. And sometimes people don't know the rules and are shocked when they get a ban. I do wonder, though, if devs have naming rules and players don't report, how exactly are those rules being enforced? There does not seem to be a check at character creation...or at least not that I am aware.

I guess that is where I come out on this.

I saw a thread on one eso gaming forum where a player who liked to name their characters after various bodily functions was lamenting a ban. They got very, very little sympathy to be honest. The vast bulk of the commments focussed on childishness. I would not report that sort of thing, but I personally would not lament that character's absence either.
