More Matte dyes

We have plenty of "shiny/glossy" dyes, and it seems that almost every new dye looks glossy/shiny even on cloth. Please, may we have more non-glossy dyes (matte), or even the option to switch from glossy to matte?

I've been trying to recreate an NPC outfit, and it's very hard to do when the NPCs have very matte colors and any shades that might match the color only ever looks glossy (It's the Psijic Order. I'm trying to make a Psijic Order outfit for my toon, but all the blues that might look similar all look glossy. I just want to look like an ordinary member of the Order).

I've reached the point where I'm not even sure I feel motivated to collect more achievement dyes, because I feel they are almost guaranteed to be shiny on cloth yet again. Which would defeat the whole purpose of me getting them in the first place.

I wish there were more options to customize dyes, because it feels like we don't really have full freedom to have our outfits look the way we want them to.

Yeees. Been thinking to do a post about this myself.

I'm so tired of the lack of varied matte dyes and how we constantly get these ultra glossy and saturated ones with two tone shimmers and whatnot.

I want more matte options with good colour variety. We still don't have nice yellows of any finish. We have various beige and yellow-greens but not a nice yolk yellow for example. Same with orange, we either got brown-ish ones or the very saturated Anequina Sunrise, which does not work on most styles and costumes because it's too bright.

I guess it's the same mindset as with crown store/crate mounts: They seem to think "the flashier, the better". In both cases, I'm someone who prefers a more natural look.

Aye. The only times I use them are on styles and costumes that dye badly and remain matte no matter the dye you use. Which is a very niché use. A lot of the time I spend in the outfit station is trying to find nice matte dyes that matches.

They are nice on some outfits if you want visibility colors, or more fancy dresses.

My thoughts exactly. While it's nice that we have access to a wide range of motifs, it can be frustrating when we can't even make those same motifs look exactly as it is on NPCs. Either because we don't have access to the same colors that they do, or because those colors don't look quite right on the outfit.

So for those who want their toon to look like an ordinary citizen of Tamriel, it can be difficult to navigate through the dyes only to find out that you still don't have what you want.

And it's a bit of a shame, especially in our examples here where you have a character that's meant to be from a specific order but you can't ever let them look the part. Because it's just not possible to dye it correctly with what we have.

What is that shiny effect that most "rare" colors have even supposed to look like (if at all)? Silk? I tried to dye my main's robe with one of these colors once and it looked like he was wearing a plastic bag in the preview...

Yeah and that's the kicker for me too. Even on fancy dresses, the shininess often makes it look like cheap costumes from your local Halloween store and not like it's silk or anything of the like. I don't know how else to describe it.

But even if I could accept that maybe it's meant to be silk, I can't stand the appearance of it. Even on fancy noble costumes (eg. Crystal Tower Sapiarch gown) it just doesn't look quite right to me.

And I would have little use for the appearance of silk...Many of my toons are typical adventurers; they have no reason to go out in the wilderness in silks and finery.

I know there are many people who like the shiny look, and by no means am I trying to take that away from them. But I would be grateful if there could just be more options for those of us who don't like it at all....

My characters change clothes quite often, depending on weather and occasion. So there are situations where fine silk clothing would fit. So if those colours would look like that, I'd have a use for them sometimes - but they definitively don't.

It bothers me that many collectibles are totally over the top and don't quite fit the world of ESO, be it plastic-like shiny dyes, lore-breaking glowy mounts, extremely flashy skins (and last year had some especially kitschy furniture, too; and don't get me started on the upcoming Dibella-themed rewards)...

I agree. However, I think the whole system of dyes needs to be revisited.

I don't know why, but a lot of them don't dye certain clothes properly or even consistently. You can use the same dye on two different items of the same style, and it appears different! Red dyes are particularly woeful. On a lot of clothes, the red dyes come out brown.

I love shiny dyes. My clothes are already very subdued IRL, so I love wearing lavish gowns in the game.

Aren't most of the common and uncommon dyes matte? My issue is that many of the rare ones are hidden behind hard to get achievements like PVP and vet content. I think they should start putting dyes in the crown store tbh, both shiny and matte.

The dyes dye fine, it is the clothes that are weird. ZOS are not making the styles and costumes dye consistently of some reason. Same as some styles/costumes got a built in glossy or matte finish no matter what dye you use.

A few dyes has an overriding matte effect, which will make anything matte, though those are few.

I'd prefer it if they made all the dye standard across all styles/motifs so that rather than being inconsistant in what colour/shade the dye actually is based upon the release date of the style/motif is it applied to before adding in more dyes

It always does surprise me with a game that obviously has so many talented artists working on it, that the player tools for altering clothing colours are so chaotic.

I presume the people making NPC garbs can add to and tweak the colours and textures, but I wish the coders (or rather whomever makes the dye addition/appearance choices) would give some extra consideration to the players. As others have said depending on the costume or motif, colours are so limiting (or similar to each other) sometimes, that I just avoid using some of them altogether.

In another thread we have many complaints about how crown store items (that we pay for above and beyond our normal game chapter purchase each year and subscriptions often), are bugged or cause distortion of body shapes to an extreme that is almost comical (or would be, if we didn't have to spend real money on them!). And in this thread we seem more of a similar sort of complaint, in that we are getting something almost dialed in .. we are not asking for the moon on a stick, just some sort of variety and consistency in colour and texture so we can in some way make our characters find an individual style that fits a vision for them.

We don't need the system to be perfect but a nice range of basic colours in various textures (at least leather, metal and cloth), would go a long way to allowing people to have fun with costumes more. I am presuming this is due to the "game engine" but as someone that does not code I have no idea if this is true or not .. and find it hard to believe when some motifs and costumes seem to be rather well designed in this regard .. then others are just, not!

Edit: in fact thinking more on this after posting, it's maybe this inconsistency that is sometimes the most infuriating thing with many of the concerns I have about ESO in general, some things are just so chef's kiss, and then you turn the corner and you find a broken Eeyore of an item and you just think what that thing could have been like!

I agree. At first (going back several years now) it was nice to get the shiny dyes because they were unusual, but now it seems like most/all dyes that have come out are glossy or shiny ones and it's actually harder to find ones that aren't, especially if you want bright or deep colours.

I wonder if it's related to them being achievement rewards. Maybe the thinking at ZOS is that rewards from newer achievements have to be at least as good as the older ones and shiny = better so since some were shiny they all need to be now.

Legate Black is not matte. Coldharbour Ash Black is the darkest matte-ish dye we got. Though as Syldras said, so to me so does it end up a bit too dark on some motifs/costumes.

yep that's what makes me the most sad. People always mention that there's plenty of common dyes that are matte, which is true, but they are dull colors/neutrals--which I also like using, but I also would like vibrant colors.

This, but also if possible I'd also like to see more textured dyes.

Like, what if we had an icy dye that could make your armor look like stalhrim, or a bark-like dye that had a sort of wooden quality to it?

It would probably be hard to make look right, but it would be neat.

Nylon doesn't exist in Tamriel though, so I'm comfortable headcanoning that these are fabrics magically imbued with aedric glow. (Magic is a convenient reason for all my fashion decisions in Tamriel. Wearing a sleeveless dress in Skyrim? Magically protected from the cold. Fighting or swimming in fancy gowns? Magic.) Though I do wish we had more dyes with a richer, more complex lustre.
