Why are motifs prevented from dropping months after they are released?

They want to motif-vate you to play.

I debate that. They are clearly working to try to get people to return to zones. They even alluded to this in the letter from Firor. Maybe this isn't the best way, but my guess is that it does have the effect they are looking for, or they would not be doing it.

Why would you want to motivate people to do old content to get stuff that should have been released with it when new content is either released or soon to be released. Woo talk about hype by inconveniently forcing players to do older content if they want stuff that should have been released with it day 1.

To keep people playing as long as you can for as low cost as they can.

This is why there are cool downs on motif drops. Why it's not curated, and why they delay release.

It's not about the initial hype of the content, it's about the hype around the motif that gets going back and doing content you have already completed.

With this new release schedule don't expect this to change.

To combat the "this zone is empty" problem a couple months after release. It's a real problem, I guess, and why they probably do this, and why they are talking about a "tentpole" in Firor's letter. Tentpole systems will bring people back to older zones to do newer activities.

I can't say that I necessarily agree with what they are doing, but I think I can see why they are doing it. At least, in part.

It's pretty much one of the only ways that ZOS has come up with to interest people in revisiting stale content.

Why bother buying it for top dollar when new content comes out- especially when you know the motifs and blueprints won't be dropping until later? Wait 6 months and you have a chance to get them AND you'll pay a lower price for the content. I know I will definitely be considering this this year!

This is brilliant and has the added benefit of not rushing to farm up leads for mythic gear that is just going to get nerfed a month later anyways!

In the nicest way possible, I want to express how lame it is for motif style pages are locked after several months when the content releases. We still do not have drowned mariner, house mornard or firesong motifs dropping yet and it has been months since they came out. Not only that but it is kinda misleading to label them in the outfit station as being able to acquire them when they cannot drop yet.

Imagine the confusion of new players who go in and want to get these cool motifs but are slapped in the face after hours of grinding to know that they are not yet officially dropping. Is it too much to ask for the description to change for not dropping yet or better yet to stop this silly waiting game to acquire wearable items months after they already released?

Hate this as well. Especially for the Q4 story DLCs - personally when a new release rolls around I want to do everything I can when it releases. I'm a lore nerd - I play for the story, and I don't like being left behind in that regard. Dungeons too - we have every achievement done in Graven Deep and Earthen Root Enclave, and you want me to wait for six months until I can go back and get the motifs?

I know the real reason why this model is the case - it's a remedy to "content drought". With the current model you have two periods of the year where the only thing being released is new dungeons. What if you don't like dungeons? Then you don't have anything to do. Except, you can go and grind that motif that just released!

It's a similar story for games like Destiny 2 - they don't want you to blow your metaphorical load and get everything done within the first couple weeks of a release, so they time-gate certain elements to force you to come back at a later date. Sure, you can go with the method @code65536 suggested and just not touch the content at all until every portion of it has been released, but the devs are banking on the release hype and the FOMO of the majority of players that this won't be the case.

In ESO's defence, it could be much worse - going back to D2, where a season's story mission quest chain is time-gated to a couple of steps each week, over several weeks, instead of just giving you the whole quest chain at the very start. But it still sucks here. Why would I want to revisit older content when everyone else is grinding the new stuff?

The thing that annoys me the most about this model is how inconsistent the release dates are for these motifs/style pages. Pretty sure we waited for like 9 months after Deadlands dropped for Annihilarch's Chosen to be released, and yet Yffre's Will is now dropping from Earthern Root Enclave 4-5 months after Lost Depths came out. Just pick one length of time and stick with it!

Id rather them just release it when it releases... The description is misleading and no one knows it's not farmable yet until they delve into the forums which they shouldn't have to.

yeah i definitely dont go back to grind dailies when they release new motifs, especially with the horrible drops rates

the only time i go back to do zone dailies is for events usually, or when im occasionally running them with friends

i usually end up just buying motif chapters from the market when their prices come down lol

Okay, but there are better ways to keep people playing content and going to a zone other than simply timegating stuff. And if anything, I'm sure sometimes it has the opposite effect. I know there was a style I was super excited for with High Isle, but it took so long for them to release it that I stopped playing and forgot about it. I don't even know if it ever came out haha

And same, I usually just buy them. Sometimes even when they are still overpriced beyond belief. Running the same boring dailies for some unreliable RNG just isn't for me.
But seriously, I think a reputation/faction system could be great for this game. Add a vendor for cosmetic goodies like mounts and etc to each main city of a chapter, players could grind the reputation by doing dailies and unlock the ability to purchase said items. Could also have achievements for it that could unlock titles and etc. This would require Zenimax to actually make more content for in game rewards rather than just putting all the good stuff in the crown store though so they'd probably never even consider such a thing, but it would definitely add way more replayability to the game other than "we're not releasing it because then you won't play later".

I actually don't have any interest in motifs unless it's something I'd really want to use (few and far between). I only buy motif pages if I need one I don't know for a "mega" master writ - and if it's not what I consider "prohibitively expensive" (which is anything over 100k gold - yeah I'm cheap no matter that I have milions of gold on my accounts) I'll grab it.

Really it's a case of how many vouchers I can get for filling the writ.....

After the cheap "master crafter" account wide achievenent because every character knows a few base game motifs, I just roll eyes and get whatever motif is cheap and available.

At this point in time, I'd be surprised if they ever release the Drowned Mariner, House Mornard, or Firesong motifs. The next chapter will probably come out before they actually make these motifs available.

It's ashame too. I think my comment got deleted without an explanation but I will point it out again because it is important.

It's false advertising and deceiving to put in the description that these motifs are dropping but they are not. They currently say that they can drop now but no one would know that unless they go to the forums to find out about it via the players.

People shouldn't find out that one page is not farmable when in-game it says it can be obtained.

The release of motifs in the dailies several months after release is why I don’t bother doing the dailies at launch. The achievements can wait; no point in grinding them out twice.
