Companions and Taunt

Unsure if bug or if devs just hate tanks with companions but every time I have a boss taunted it will instead go right for my companion and kill them (or at least try to) and break the taunt, that's not how taunt is suppose to work

From what I understand, it varies from one boss to the next, mechanics wise. Some will target the tank and stay focused on them as long as the taunt is maintained.. Some bosses will focus on the tank and periodically attack whoever is furthest away (ranged DPS or healer) before returning to the tank, regardless of an active taunt.

I also remember hearing somewhere that companions have a "default" agro (not skill related) to help keep enemies off the player. So if you drop taunt for even a second or two, that is enough time for the boss to target the companion.

It is correct that some bosses have a mechanic where they will ignore the taunt and target an random player for specific attacks. This is common in MMORPGS.

However, the second part should not be an issue if there is an active taunt on the boss. Just saying taunt should not be ignored outside is specific mechanics.

I've tanked for a number of years now so I know how taunt is suppose to work, I also use Untaunted addon just to be certain of the duration, this is happening when the bosses are fully taunted so there's no reason for it.

The mechanic where they ignore taunt is on a secondary attack and usually aims at the person furthest away. I know which bosses have these (mainly dungeon). I believe that particular mechanic is aimed to stop players who think they can use their group as a meatshield, I usually refer to it as the anti-coward mechanic.

All ranged play ranged its just a mechanic. Is your companion also a tank? Are you overtaunting by chance?

I had a similar thought that the companion may have a taunt and the player tank is over-taunting. Good question.

No the companion is not a tank, they're mostly magic user dps, as to "over taunting" that's not really a thing, don't know who started that but you cannot taunt a creature "too much" and if you want to claim such show me a credible source of that info.

Other players can "break" a taunt by using a taunt like if a second tank runs up and starts taunting a creature that is already being tanked and taunted, then the taunt breaks and the creature will randomly attack anyone..

As I said I use the addon Untaunted, displays a bar showing the taunt and the time left on it. Look I'm level 2,173 with a total of 14, 347.6 hours played on my main account alone, I've been tanking for a number of years with all different classes (still trying to work out a good sorc tank tho, current fav is of course necro) so I kind of have a clue as to what I'm doing and what the mechanics actually are.

Over-taunting is very much a thing.

A taunt last 15 seconds but there is a window of about the initial 12 or 13 seconds where if there are three taunts during that window from two sources the target will not respect the taunt again until that initial 12-13 seconds has concluded. With rare exceptions that target will stay on the source of the last taunt. There is even a debuff icon that shows the target is immune to taunt.

This is a mechanic of the game unless Zenimax has changed it fairly recently.

With that, if someone only does solo tank content they would see this in only one dungeon that seems to have a mysterious taunt occur out of nowhere and the boss gets the debuff icon or when they have a DPS or healer in the group that taunts the target.

    thats not entirely true either

when an enemy receives taunt immunity, they will stay taunted to the last person that taunted it when immunity was triggered (unless said person dies, then its a free for all till the immunity wears off)

some enemies (such as the last boss in arx corinium dungeon or last boss in direfrost keep) will just randomly ignore taunts to target someone at random

I think it could be because companions may be perceived as pets and sometimes take aggro, despite taunt.

I asked for a link to a credible source, not a player, you say Zenimax recently made changes to it then use a posting of that if it exists please. Aside, if it does exist as you describe then that would not be the problem. As I stated I use the addon Untaunted, gives me a bar when I taunt and shows how long I have left on the taunt, I'm usually bashing, maneuvering to face the creature in the direction I want/need, dodging or heavy attacking (also currently bugged). The bar is always at least 1/2 - 1/3 before I taunt it again.

    @ other postings:
That's as I described when another tank runs in and taunts while the creature is already being tanked. They break the taunt and it runs amok, very annoying if you're the first tank and had it under control, but it's an MMO, so rude people...

    @TimeViewer

I never said Zenimax made recent changes. I specifically stated this is a mechanic of the game unless Zenimax has changed it fairly recently.

Now you have 5 people confirming over-taunt does exist, myself, the two links I provided, @sinnereso (though they are incorrect about the last aspect), and @Necrotech_Master.

I also noted that there is a dungeon with a mysterious second source for a tuant where over-taunt will occur.
@Necrotech_Master confirms this and even notes a second dungeon with the same issue.

Oh, starting at 1 minute, that video I provided demonstrates over-taunt. With the first and second taunt one debuff appears and when the second player taunts a second debuff appears and the boss goes to that second person. After the second person taunts and the target goes to taht second person the first player taunts again (@1:14) and the target remains on the second person because it has taunt immunity.

In that video, look at the add-on on the left of the screen. The second bar occurs when the second player taunts. That cross symbol is the typical symbol for taunt immunity, at least used by addons. OP goes on to explain a lot about the details of this mechanic so I suggest watching it in full for anyone unaware that this mechanic exists.

You wanted a credible source. It does not get more credible than a video specifically demonstrating the mechanic with such a high level of precision and accuracy.

Yes sorry you did say "unless" my bad on that, as to the number claiming it exists that means nothing, People make false claims every day, I've personally caught people in Steam forums making claims about games when they didn't even own, and had never played, the game in question. Years ago I GMed a now very old game where we had one person make a post about "Whale Armor" detailing how to get it and how rare it was to succeed. We had a lot of people confirm that it existed only to find that the OP had made the post as a joke.

As long as I have played I have never had what you describe happen to me, if I had then I'd accept it, but until you can show me some credible evidence, confirmation by a mod, a post by Zenimax, something official, not just some player or "streamer said..." sorry but I just do not believe it to be true.

for stuff like WBs or dragons, they are almost always getting overtaunted, and sometimes by people who cant you know take hits from the dragon which is why it might seem like they are attacking at random

in some cases with WBs or stuff like that, i almost purposely overtaunt to keep the enemy focused on me as much as possible because i know i can survive lol

"overtaunting" was added to the game idk maybe 6-7 years ago? it definitely can only happen if 2+ players apply taunts to the same target within a certain time frame

some enemies either occasionally ignore taunt (some dungeon bosses) while others actively are immune to taunt for a period of time (swashbucklers in dreadsail reef trial are the only ones i know that do this right now)

Its very much a thing! but requires 2+ taunters todo it.. 3 taunts(total) by 2+ taunters and mob goes wild for 15sec attacking anyone it wants and cant be taunted for that duration!

    thats not entirely true either

when an enemy receives taunt immunity, they will stay taunted to the last person that taunted it when immunity was triggered (unless said person dies, then its a free for all till the immunity wears off)

some enemies (such as the last boss in arx corinium dungeon or last boss in direfrost keep) will just randomly ignore taunts to target someone at random

Well that could be.. tbh I only really see it messing with dragons and usually after it comes down from space cant be taunted at all.. But it also does get over taunted by players and ill pay more attention to that detail. Im new at it only tanking a month ish.

for stuff like WBs or dragons, they are almost always getting overtaunted, and sometimes by people who cant you know take hits from the dragon which is why it might seem like they are attacking at random

in some cases with WBs or stuff like that, i almost purposely overtaunt to keep the enemy focused on me as much as possible because i know i can survive lol

yes I see this often on dragons and public bosses. You can easily test it with 2 taunters taunting back n forth, mob will go wild for 15ish secs doing as it pleases.

ive never seen that happen, when i see something overtaunted it stays taunted on the last thing that applied taunt/taunt immunity (i use the ssrendar addon to be able to see when enemy has taunt immunity, and if there are only 2 people, if i know i taunted first then someone else taunted, ill sometimes immediately retaunt to get the aggro back and trigger taunt immunity so the boss isnt running back and forth)

dragons are a little bit different, they will wing/tail slap people regardless if they are taunted or not if your standing too far to the side/back, but their "main attacks" (bites and dragon shout) only target the one who has them taunted (unless they die or nobody was taunting lol)

Here is a link to another player explaining it 12 months ago.
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/comment/7478262/#Comment_7478262

And here is a video from earlier this year discussing it.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbAB0S0ekqM

Last edit. And a companion can be set up for DPS and still have a taunt. The undaunted skill line for companions has a ranged taunt.

    @TimeViewer

You created this thread to get answers yet are disregarding what we have provided including the video that clearly explains and demonstrates the mechanics as well as the add-on that shows that OT occurred.

So I suggest you test this yourself. If you are interested in off-tanking the last boss in vMoL, especially HM, then you will need to understand the mechanic. The OT can cause a wipe if they taunt to frequently and cannot get the add back off the MT.

Oh, to test it, taunt twice quickly and have a second target taunt a third time right afterward. Until 12 seconds have passed since your first taunt you will not be able to taunt back. Make sure no one is doing damage in the meantime so the target does not die before the test is done.

taunt immunity does only apply if 2+ taunt the same target

if your by yourself you could spam puncture to kill an overland target and it will not get taunt immunity

i dont think the companion taunt follows the same rules as normal taunt, their taunt already will not be used of the target they are hitting is taunted, and the player taunt will always override the companion taunt

Actually, I have also noticed companions do seem to drop taunts undetectable by any add-ons even when they do not have any skills with taunts slotted.

I am often doing content duo with my daughter, and we both run companions -- and I am tanking there. We went nuts for months trying to figure out why the hell everything and its pet hamsters keeps ignoring me and focus on her companion instead, to the point of completely respeccing both companions several times, even slotting heals only.

    It still keeps happening.

Same, as I keep trying to say here, only I'm usually solo so it's just me and my companion. I noticed it a lot more when I started using Ember who doesn't have the best gear yet (hand me downs... even in rpgs) so she gets squashed a lot really quick

Provide a video of this happening with addons or anything that tracks the debuff on the target active. The addon used in the video I linked earlier is an excellent choice.

Same. My spouse and I like to solo or two person dungeons, bosses etc with our companions present, and the mobs routinely run over to the companions to attack them. Usually immediately after I toss down my ultimate (DK standard of might, so not when I want the mob to scamper off). Now, neither of us are tank specced, but neither are the companions. We've given them no taunt abilities, and we both do a lot more dps than they do. I figured it was just happening because we're not tanks (generally have them set to heal) and the game may be set up to prioritize companion dps for aggro without the player using a deliberate taunt ability, but it's interesting that it's happening to players who really are tanks.

Same. My spouse and I like to solo or two person dungeons, bosses etc with our companions present, and the mobs routinely run over to the companions to attack them. Quick question, what kind of gear do you have on the companions that get attacked, the one I've really noticed this the most with, Ember, has very low gear, I haven't farmed or bought her much yet so I'm wondering if it's low armor
