Should I make a Wizard or should I keep trying Warrior?

For all of my 6 years playing this game I have tried and tried to make a fun melee warrior character with every different class and race. But I keep feeling unsatisfied with the characters I design and play. Nothing in this game really strikes me as warrior without taking mainly universal skills and leaving class identity behind. I'm not a meta or min max player but I do want to be able to do the most damage I can and still be useful.

So I ask you... should I stop this meat head dream of bashing in skulls and try playing as a wizard instead going forward? What do you think?

Why not both? Then you can light them on fire WHILE bashing in their skull!

classes in ESO are only a soft suggestion, you can make a character that is melee and uses magic.

Yeah but that feels weird to me. Casting magic while using weapons just feels wrong. I know its BiS if you use front bar daggers and back bar destruction staff though

I prefer the "warrior" ethic. I've never really been a fan of mages in ESO, from the get-go. So, I have some "mage types" - but my stam characters are my go to people.

This isn't just in ESO - it's my entire life with TES single player games as well - all of them, beginning with Arena's release in 1994.

Alternatively, in the Forgotten Realms games, mages were my go-to there.

Same! I've always gone warrior or a magic knight. From Morrowind to Skyrim. And ij all other RPGs like dragon age or even mass effect with thr soldier class

I have to say I've really tried to "get with" the magicka classes in ESO, but.... they're just not very fun to play. I have to play pet sorcs because my ping is so high - and pets aren't affected by that as they're run server-side. But.... a sorc isn't a "mage" to me - not like mages in other games (eh, other mmos too - not like in WoW and RIFT). And no.... I don't play necros. Ever.

In general, in every TES game including ESO, the warrior ethic (warden especially, because again, the pet doesn't have to deal with my high ping) is my preference. A very large preference actually.

Do they have to follow strict builds? Is free form not allowed? I grab whatever works best for me, if an ability doesn't fit my way of play it is removed from my build regardless of how good it is. Necrotic Orb for example, the way it plays annoys me so I don't use it. Just because I'm playing a Stamina Necromancer, I don't like Skeletal Archer and use Arcanist instead because its attack is AOE.

All my characters are free form in some way, while they may have mostly Stamina or Magicka based abilities, I don't lock them down to a specific playstyle. I avoid "role" designs because they are limiting in freedom, creativity, and most of all enjoying the game.

Sounds like we have a lot in common haha I've always struggled to make a melee build I really enjoy. Partially because I don't like the skills for most of the melee weapons, would love to rock a one hand+shield DPS build, and spell effects on most class abilities feel too over the top for a true warrior type. Closest I've gotten to being content with a melee build was my sorcerer khajiit.... but like you said, even that didn't feel very warrior-like. I thought of him more as a spellthief/rogue thing. I find myself way happier with melee builds the way New World does their skills/weapons. I really feel like a warrior in that game; you can use a one hand+shield even for DPS and your second weapon never just disappears either haha so you can extra feel like a decked out adventuring warrior with a shield, sword, and spear (what I usually run in New World, sometimes I use the bow too and that looks just as cool).
For your problem though; I think any race could work if you customize them right and I don't know what class I'd suggest since I agree that none of them or their skills really allow for a true warrior type character.... but you could try running oakensoul ring to at least minimize some of the flashy spell effects/animations you'd normally have going off from buffing/etc? That way you'll feel a little less magical and more warrior, I guess....? Or just stick with the wizard concept, idk haha I tried to think of something.

I have to say I really love 2 hand stam builds. I have some that are still in DW, but they're just not as effective for me.

Play a Dragonknight and then you get a Warrior Wizard. Magic powers, all melee, class is designed around CQC engagements, and it feels fun to play!

Lore appropriate to because touch spells, armor spells, and other forms of alteration and destruction magic in TES lore can allow a mage to brawl on the front lines in robes while having the same defensive prowess as a man in full steel plate.

Dragonknight has been my go to class since day 1 but I stopped playing it as a hybrid because of the drake fury audio glitch. But fire and earth are ideal for magic warriors you're right

I don't play DK as a hybrid even though that seems to be the meta... Think the only hybrid thing I did was change my jewelry glyph and mundus stone to weapon damage to take advantage of the minor brutality, but otherwise I'm still 100% a magDK. I love brawling in wizard robes/a nice dress while casting spells all over the place hehehe.

Makes me feel like I'm playing my Breton Spellsword in Oblivion where I'd enchant a dress to hit the armor cap to avoid repairing my gear, used a sword and shield, and then used destruction and alteration magic as my primary go to. Vampire works well to with DK in ESO since it's mostly melee focused, and the stage 4 passive kinda turns you into a pseudo nightblade at times <.<

I've never done a vampire. I usually go Nord and add werewolf even though it's Niche. And the new hybrid molten while seems annoying to use as a mag dk honestly.

Play what you want man. Not sure what kinda content you prefer doing but you can do a-okay as a warrior. I recommend stamdk or stamsorc but even that's probably not super important.

I will say you'll probably want to include SOME other skills... Curse, streak, noxious breath fossilize whatever, some are too good to give up. But it only breaks immersion if you let it. I spent many years pvping people into the ground with a d-swinging Dk. It might not be the flavor of this month but its still alright.

When my girlfriend first started, she was adamant about always playing a melee warrior type; said she didn't like ranged magical types and couldn't see herself ever playing one.

But when High Isle dropped, I talked her into trying a Breton magsorc, and it has since become her favorite character.
(my main is a Nord Warden tank, so I wasn't trying to influence her.)

My point is that you'll never know until you try.

The classes in ESO are all collections of magic-based skills, and you get your melee skills from your choice of weapon, so there is no way to create a melee character without basing them on “generic” or universal skills as you put it.

What class you pick is going to determine (for a melee build) how you keep yourself healed, shielded, and sustained with the Stamina your skills need. Healing and buffs are always going to involve magic in any game that has it.

      Don’t worry, be violent!
