Permanent ban from chat abuse isn't justified ❌
I feel like a permanent social ban would be more justified, with the idea that if any more rules are broken (ex. physical harassment) it’d be a complete ban. However, that is not to say I think with social abuse shouldn’t lead to a permanent ban, it’s ZOS’ game they can moderate how they want and I’m sure it’s easier to keep track of this way.

I feel there is a cultural aspect to all of this. I come from a country where people are very direct and upfront about what they think of a situation, we don't sugarcoat. I've come to learn that ZOS goes for the banhammer if they feel a snowflake might have it's feelings hurt even if it doesn't involve any foul language or swearing.

This. I'll never understand why it's so hard for some people to just not be a massive jerk in chat.

And "it's rated 18+" (which it isn't, at least in the US, it's just M) or "customer spent a lot of $" don't have any bearing on this.
For ex, profanity blocker option doesn't mean you're free to curse up a storm any more than someone wearing a bulletproof vest means you're free to shoot them. It's still against the rules.
(break the driving rules enough, they take away your car. Even though "you paid for it".)

edit: and hey, there go the totally-unsurprising rant threads. I foresee more banning.

It's almost like the OP's very actions in the forum today inform on the reasons why they were banned.

I don’t think permanent bans via restriction from playing ESO is a solid solution. I think perhaps being banned from using chat in general could be a first start. If the person goes and DMs or Whispers abusive things, then an account ban is justifiable.

This game may be rated M for mature but as I’ve learned from the last couple of years, you could be Presidents of the United States and still be banned from things for violating ToS.

I think people aren’t able to regulate themselves if left openly to their own devices. This has to do with how much we associate ourselves with our individualism or individual identity. We don’t see ourselves as a collective but instead as a singular piece in the system. The singular piece is itself “unique” and different from all the other pieces, therefore it should be allowed to not work harmoniously with the other pieces—that is the kind of thinking I think is used by players who justify abusing others in chat. They have little disregard for how their actions affect others. Some people may not have as much experience as you playing ESO, some players may have physical or cognitive limitations that prevent them from playing how you want them to play, and it’s those people the ToS serves to protect because ZOS knows that everyone should be included if they want to play ESO, not just the really good players or the players who follow meta, but everyone because that’s when life is actually beneficial is when everyone is included and given the chance to play and be happy playing

Yeah you're right i get it, just never thought about it really, like somehow my caveman brains just thought that what i bought, i own it, all the housing stuff, chapters, crown store stuff and fashion, emotes, etc etc, i thought in way its mine till day eso servers get taken down. i know my bad language and trash talking was against rules, just didnt expect to have it all taken away permanently like this, but its fine like i said, this game rlly never was for me i realize it now, and this community doesnt find trash talking or cussing in public chat funny either, which is fine, just not my place

Well, as others have said, just because you spent money doesn't make you exempt from the rules. Another way to look at it is this: the person or several persons you abused in chat could have also spent the same, more, or less on this game as you did and does that mean they should be subject to your verbal abuse?

Strangely, it's possible to be abusive without using foul language or swear words.

I mean you could add that person to your ignore list, problem solved. :p

As a community, it's not really "problem solved" if the individual is abusing many people across the game daily. From a ZOS perspective, seems like a very simple problem to solve by removing the one individual causing misery across many, particularly since it sounds like it has been repeated infractions and ignored warnings, in this case.

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one" applies. And at the end of the day, if you are flagrantly breaking a company's TOS and ignoring past warnings/non-permanent bans, then eventually your playing with fire is gonna catch up to you.

I think you're right, because where I come from Snowflakes are the ones complaining how much money they spent and how that makes them entitled to treat other people like garbage.

Some people don't share that view, it seems.

People are way, way too sensitive and sheltered now days. If you have a problem with in game chat just put that player on ignore. Problem solved.

Bans should be reserved for cheaters, bots and maybe doxing, and that's it.

Yeah, just ignore the problem until it goes away. Cause that always works out well for the world.

    Hi there,

As we feel that this thread has run its course, we are going to go ahead and close this thread down. And as Kevin has said, "if anyone finds themselves in a situation like this, the best course of action is to appeal and go through the appeal process with Customer Service. They will go through their process with you to have a discussion about why an account is actioned and (depending on the severity) steps to fix the issue."

Thank you all for your understanding.
