Hackwings: a complete nuisance or just misunderstood?

Obviously a complete nuisance... I hate them!!

They're obviously a distant relative of the other pain in the butt, the clannfear.

There is a special place in dev hell for whomever created these things.

:/:)

Hackwings are descended from the Cliffracer, an equally annoying flying animal. In the 3rd Elder Scrolls game they were everywhere, aggressive, and came at you from almost any angle. ESO has a few of them in Morrowind since the game takes place before St.Jib slaughtered them all.

This is both insightful AND awesome. Thanks for the info.

I can handle the Cliffracer if I'm on top of them quickly, but those Hackwings are a pain in the a**.

I really need to catch up on my lore.

    Thank you :)

The 2 hand skill uppercut has 2 morphs, Dizzing Swing and Wrecking Blow.
Wrecking Blow used to have a strong knockback where you could literately use players as golf balls. lol

Main is Blue-Thuxis, a Argonian stamSorc, whose also is a werewolf! 2nd main, Cobalt-Thuxis, a Argonian stamArc, an identical twin sister to Blue-Thuxis, even is a werewolf as well! some alts:
Nirn-Scale Rajthux (Argonian, Templar), Ros-Ei Nature-Thuxis (Argonian, Warden), Crimson-Thuxis (Argonian, DK), Bone-Thuxis Tharn (Argonian, Necro) Why Bone-Thuxis has Tharn as a last name:
The siblings were separated at a young age due to a Dres slaver raid, Blue, Cobalt, Ros-Ei & their mother were able to escape, Crimson & Bone weren't that lucky. Crimson was later "rescued" by some Orcs that later ambushed the House Dres Dunmers, unfortunately one Dunmer remained & sadly successfully brought the young Bone-Thuxis to the Dres plantation. Later an Imperial, a Tharn, bought Bone at a auction & later told he was free, the young Argonian sadly had no idea where to go & doesn't know if his family was still alive, so the Tharn adopted him into House Tharn. This family of Argonians finally reunited years later.
, Kenneth Clyde (Nord, Sorc), Selene Gray-Thuxis (Argonian, Nightblade), Urmanda (Orc, Warden)
Some ESO history: I originally started from PS4 NA during June 10, 2015, I did reached CP 810+ on there. I eventually kinda got tired of paying PS+, so during February 4, 2019 I started moving to PC NA. Also CP: 810+. Nowadays I play ESO PC mostly, while PS4 is dust.

I would NEVER want a hackwing as a pet.

I LOVE animals but I would put that hackwing in a bag and drown it in the river without any question.

Ok, in real life I wouldn't, and it would break my heart turning it in to the RSPCA.

I hate them but they deserve to live (I guess).

Almost as much fun as npcs still having the old version of Wrecking Blow.

I once did a public dungeon, think it might have been Vile Manse where I got hit by three of those in succession, before my body hit the ground from the first one i was knocked back a second and third time in the air.

This is the reason I started wearing Sellistrix monster set while running overland and have never looked back.

Ever since changes to Stamina cost a few years back, when (IIRC) it started costing a lot more Stamina to break free, I'm now frequently inclined to just lay on the ground after being pinned down by a clannfear or knocked down by a hackwing or other aggresive animal, at least if my Stamina level is at less than 50%. I'd rather try to block them or dodge to avoid being knocked down in the first place. If I get pinned down by a clannfear, especially while playing on my PetSorc main, I like to roleplay that he's laughing at the clannfear about being tickled, such as when a large, overly-affectionate dog is on top of you.
I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!

    HATE. THEM.

One of the greatest joys I get is being on a character with either the Templar's Javelin skill or a bow with the Scatter Shot skill.

Any hackwing I come across gets the gift of knock back

I wish that their attack telegraphs were correct. They show a round "AOE" marker then do a "dash" attack instead. It gets me every time, even though I know they are going to do it. Shouldn't it be a rectangular "landing strip" telegraph?

Cliffstriders and Hackwings are evil. They need to stay far away from me or else.

    'Nuff said. :)

In spite of that though, I still think the Ice Wraiths and Kotu Gavas are SIGNIFICANTLY more annoying and INFINITELY more evil than hackwings.

If someone like St. Jiub were to come along and eradicate all the Kotu Gavas from Tamriel....well, let us just say I certainly wouldn't complain ;)

    Just need a good pesticide...

    Haha I can't wait!!!

If I remember correctly, it's near the Serpent Shrine in the middle of Amenos Island.....

It can be fun, but it's a bit of a nasty surprise the first time around.... and they use a lot of brush and trees in the area, so you do sort of stumble into it.

Blocking when you see the red circle will keep them from knocking you down.

I know. LOL It's just misleading because most circular AOEs don't move and if I'm not in the circle, then in most cases, I won't get hit.

To telegraph a circular attack but then strike in a linear path (which should be a rectangle) means blocking is the only option, since you can't tell which direction the strike will go.

Example: I'm adventuring with someone and we encounter hackwings. The circular AOE appears. Is the hackwing targeting me or my friend? If it displayed a rectangle, we would both know which one of us was targeted and respond accordingly.

The game conditions us to respond to the telegraphs based on shape and size. But this problem with hackwings is what happens when the game doesn't follow it's own "rules".

I believe minotaurs also falsely display their attacks in this way.

When I left there was a line of cliffracers flapping above me, at least six of them... kill one and the next would descend to take it's place.

Remember back at launch, it was no CC immunity so an group of strangles started to toss this one around as an ball.
Managed to kill them with AoE and dots but in at lower level you would had serious problem.
I say they really loved mob with CC back around Morrowind.

You needed some ranged firepower, easy solution was an ring with ranged fire damage on target then used.
Best part that that you could get impressive rate of fire with this as in how fast you clicked or many times a second letting you walk the fire onto them like shooting an machine gun with tracers. Damage cliffracer health + 1:)
Never had problems with them outside early in the game.

Now I had an mod with harder enemies, one who gave higher level cliffracers an ranged attacks. Still outgunned them.
