Should ESO do Away With Skyshards?

You get plenty of skill points just playing the game, especially if you do both pvp and PvE, to not really need skyshards. They are a nice bonus to exploring.

What do you want the game to be? There needs to be a variety of activities to keep all players engaged over the long term.
This seems a very different version to the developers and a lot of players want. Skyshards reward you for exploring in addition to the discovery experience. You don't need every skyshard on every character and you can threfore chose which zones/delves to collect them from. Daily and weekly Endeavors provide an incentive to complete delves and public dungeons on alts.
You are probably not going to want to explore everything on your 17th alt and ZOS have already provided you with an option to get around that - and yes you do need to pay. For other players, the time taken to complete that task is part of playing the game and they will do it.
I'm not sure what problem you are trying to solve.

No, sending out a new character to gather skyshards is still satisfying after 30 characters on two accounts
As has been said, it's a good way to explore and revisit the map, as well as kill for XP, gather resources or pick up quests while you're at it

Please don't make requests to dumb down this game further than it already has been. Honestly, I say this with love for the game- I am so very, deeply tired of the actual playing part being removed from the gameplay. Account wide achievements was bad enough. Don't take the exploration aspect of the game away too.

    No, please no!

I'm a PvE player and what I like the most in the game content are "treasures hunts" all types. For me, finding and activating skyshards is a sort of treasure hunt and I don't want to see it disappearing.

I also enjoy hunting for skyshards. But I also think it's important to encourage players to actually play their characters, including while developing a build.

If you want to bypass that and jump straight to the end you already have the option by buying skyshards from the crown store. I'm not sure how many people actually do that, but the option is there if you want it. I don't think the process needs to be trivialised any further.

Not really. These should stay in the game because of lore of your characters and also they are a very good designed system for character development which encourages exploration. They are the prime source of skill points also.

Skyshards and Mages Guild books are some of the only reasons to venture into certain zones in ESO. Most Mages Guild books can be obtained in Cyrodiil without ever leaving the zone. That leaves Skyshards. In terms of spreading the population across multiple zones, it makes no sense to remove them in favour of simply levelling up. While I don't know how much ZOS makes from crown store Skyshard purchases, and won't speculate, it also doesn't make sense to remove an entire category.

I assume what they meant by purchase is that you will gain a skill point every time you level up, like other games, and you would use that skill point to purchase/obtain the skill or passive. Rather than using real life money/crowns or gold to purchase. In this way, it's perfectly in keeping with the RPG experience.

Don't give them any more corners to cut. Skyshards have been a part of the game since the start and they incentivize exploring.

It's not even that big a deal to go ad collect them outside of Cyrodiil or IC.

It's an mmoRPG. Lots of people play for the story, the questing, the escapism.

One person's time wasted is another person's time invested. I enjoy hunting things down like skyshards, or feathers in Assassin's Creed, or heart pieces in Zelda and various McGuffins. In fact, I think it ruined the sense of discovery when Zos made the shards easy to find, but that's a whole other forum post.

(also, FYI "stockholm syndrome" is a fallacy)

My first character, absolutely. I managed to get almost all of the base game shards on my own. Unfortunately only most, because Zos changed it so they appeared on the map (should have been an optional toggle, imho) before I got them all.

Not everyone plays with a speedrun mentality, some players like to take their time and just play the game.

I'll be honest, when I recently did my run to get all of the Cyrodiil shards, I absolutely used a map 😅

You don't really need them for a basic character so i don't see the problem. If you want to have a reason to explore or have extra points available they are an easy way to do both on additional characters.

I have 1 with almost all the available skill points and a second who has a far bit from public dungeons but haven't farmed them for any of my other 13 characters outside of what i hit in the leveling process.

No. You seem to be looking at Skyshards in isolation.

Skill points, 64 from leveling. 30'ish group dungeons. 14 public dungeons. 50 alliance ranks. 160+ from quests.

Skyshards are just one of many ways of collecting skill points.

Quests, lore dumps, character interactions, map completion, costumes, pets, mounts those are valid reasons to explore and interact with the world. Being unable to participate and compete in pve and pvp until you do is not.

Good thing Skyshards don't prevent you from being able to participate in PVE and PvP then!

(Mod snipped quote but quote was still there with broken quote tags-just going to delete it myself to help out.

There's a enormous difference between "Thinking you have to" do something, and doing it because you enjoy it. For many people who like this kind of gameplay and wish to repeat it on different characters, it is NOT about "earning the right" to do something at all. It is, instead, about the journey taken on each character. Many treat it as a kind of additional quest and a way to connect to a new character. Many find it highly relaxing and do not consider it to be a chore. For some, they aren't even doing it in order to get to other content- for some, the gathering of skyshards, lorebooks, and other such collectibles IS the content they want to repeat when they make a new character!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the repetition of such a task no matter what reason you like it. Perhaps some do feel they wish to have the character "earn the right"- and there is nothing wrong with that style of gameplay.

Do not presume to understand how others think or feel about things and attempt to diagnose them with mental illness simply because you do not think they should be enjoying something a certain way.

For a good build, you need around 120 skill points. With only 64 coming from levelling to 50 I think the problem is more that you have to pick up so many skill points from alternate sources just to afford a basic level of build.

Sources like... dungeons, public dungeons, zone story quests, main story quests, pvp, skyshards. Stuff you might expect people to be getting while they're leveling up. So you'll be at 50 with plenty more than 64 skill points.

Unless, of course, you "farmed" your way there on Dolmens/etc. Of course, someone willing to do that level of mindless grind should also be fine with grinding out skyshards or other skill points. /shrug

Yeah it feels silly to have them nowadays since they're just like a chore you need to do.

But how else would we get those points if they were gone.

Getting skyshards feels like one of those outdated single player game side quests you find in assassins creed games.
