Should ESO do Away With Skyshards?

Skyshards have long been used in ESO for purchasing skills, passives, and morphs. But what if you could just purchase the skills/passives/morphs by just leveling up the skill-line and not by chasing over Tamriel for meteoric shards of glass that rained from the heavens?

Academic debate. I of course have never seen their books, but I promise that skyshard sales bring in a lot of revenue.

For me, I thought they were a nice touch in terms of progression on my first character, by my third or fourth, they were a hassle. By my 12th, they were an expense.

No, I enjoy searching for them and get a little boost when I find one, although they took all the fun out of that recently...

Oh heck no! I love going all over the world to find skyshards. Gets my characters out to explore, grab wayshrines, gather mats. It's fun!

I really don't get why people are so determined to trivialise the games they purport to enjoy playing. If all their ideas were implemented, what would be left?

I think the skyshard system is one of the things the game does really well. It's a keeper. :)

I did not vote because putting that on either option and not the other makes the poll biased.

No, as much as I hate to admit it those things sell, I have felt lazy on more than a few occasions and bought all the ones for a zone or two on an alts here and there, no way are they giving up those sales.

What's next checkout a few hundred books at a library to finish levelling the mages guild skill line in one go.

Even on alts you are likely going to visit quite a few zones to unlock wayshrines, unlock the psijic skill line, find books for the mages guild skill line, do the public dungeons, be able to do daily quests in newer zones etc...

You don't even need to visit every single zone there are enough skyshards now that you can ignore questing all together for the most part, if you feel like it and still get more than enough skill points to finish a characters build just by running or riding around zones without having to pay a cent.

Skyshards are an important part of exploration and pacing.

Also, it's fun to see where they landed and if the people of Tamriel have moved them as a decoration.

Skyshards mean you have to explore the world and do some content in order to equip your character with your desired skills. With so many new zones added since the game's inception, there's more than enough skyshards to reasonably fulfill your needs. Searching and finding them adds to the immersion and can be rewarding. The alternative proposed would make the game dull; a different system to acquire skill points might end up worse than what we have. Why change something when it just works (pardon the Todd Howard reference)?

If you have one character which has already found and claimed all the skyshards, then they are already available for purchase on all your other characters. Your basically asking for something which already exists.

Exploration & wandering is the fun part. Why do anything to lessen that?

(I really don't understand paying for Skyshard unlocks, either. Seems like a total waste. Yes, even on your 12th character. By then, you know that you don't remotely need all/many of them to make your "build". So there's no problem with going to grab a the ones you need.)

As well, as long as I have played this game now (5+ years) I know where they all are anyway. It's no big deal any more.

From the original ESO introduction I looked at the skyshard system as getting more and more of your soul back ever since i was told my character was the vestige and had no soul.

making your character go to all of these places is character building, and some would say that's part of what makes up the soul.

These are things you start to care less and less about if you just want max max max right away (like a certain % of the playerbase) unless you have characters that you play under certain conditions

I think there's a disconnect between 'doing away with skyshards' and 'the fact levelling to 50 gives you such a pitifully low number of skill points'.

For a good build, you need around 120 skill points. With only 64 coming from levelling to 50 I think the problem is more that you have to pick up so many skill points from alternate sources just to afford a basic level of build.

Armor passives - 11 skill points
Weapon passives - 10 skill points each (2 weapons for many, so 20 skill points)
Class passives - 8 skill points per line (3 lines so 24 points)
Racial passives - 9 skill points

So just affording what I would consider is the absolute basic passives to support you (yes I would consider 2 weapon lines basic) you need 11+20+24+9 = 64... before any skills are chosen!

I think they should just change it so you get 2 skill points every level, giving you 98 from levelling. It's still not enough and wouldn't discourage you from obtaining additional skill points to bulk out passives elsewhere (or have multiple skills purchased for changing) but it'd let you hit 50 and think 'okay, I'm good for a bit.

I have all skyshards on 1 character, btw, and while I can accept if they did away with it in exchange for us getting 3 skill points per level, I don't really see a need to remove content from the game in the same way I wouldn't expect them to remove having to fight in pvp to get access to the warhorn so many people expect every character who is a support role to have.
