The Hundredth “Stop Fake Tanks” Plea

Title speaks for itself. We are being punished for queuing as dps with longer wait times, and vote kicking fake tanks only helps THEM because they get instant queues and our existing group never backfills.

I imagine there are a lot of priorities right now developmentally, and with update 35 I’m sure it’s tough to filter through all of the…feedback. But I need to know, is the team working on solutions?

I think I tend to be a more ZOS positive poster, but the fake queueing problem really has me frustrated.

    Play a tank yourself.

What solutions do you see as plausible?

At this point, you need the DPS more.

You only need a tank in vDLC dungeons, and I don't see fakes there so often. They know that they couldn't complete it (unless they put some time and effort into their builds, but then they won't be fake anymore) and just don't go there. There's absolutely no problem with faking in vet vanilla or normal dlc, as all of them can easily be solo'd. You should be thankful actually, because you go in 3 (or 4) dd and thus complete the dungeon quickly.

If it was not open to abuse, by people kicking people they just don't like, I would say stop exempting the player who gets vote kicked from the 15 minute penalty.

The team is not working on solutions and ZOS' official stance is "there are no fake tanks, just people overestimating their capabilities to fill the tank role". Maybe they aren't taking the issue seriously or maybe they think it's fine.
Personally I don't see the issue so long as it works out and people actually wait for the group and not rush forward to essentially solo the dungeon.
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

There is another trick for this as well, and it also ensures DPS will be doing some actual damage. Form your own group.

That is fine when the fake tank is a good damage dealer, when its just an average or below average player wanting a short cut into a group however, who keeps getting killed, while the boss runs all over the place, it wastes the other 3 group members time.

Crazy idea: Make tanking actually engaging and impactful and maybe there wouldn't be such a massive shortage of real tanks.

Honestly for all the posts about fake tanking I rarely see/hear a viable solution. People will learn to skirt around whatever system ZoS puts in place anyway. Overall it's a community issue, not a game one. However, I do believe that if "proper" tanks weren't so boring to play then this would be less of a problem.

Crazy idea: there actually isn't anything wrong with tanking in ESO and, broadly speaking, there actually isn't a huge shortage of tanks in the game. Tanking is only boring if you play them in a boring way (i.e. "taunt and block" without any of the extras). Tanks who play for more than a year or so tend to join guilds and form groups with guild members and friends who are competent, and are thus removed from the dungeon queue creating what people perceive as a general shortage when in reality the shortage is specific non-premade groups.

Solo queuing with the group finder as a tank is about as fun as playing Russian Roulette with all the 5k DPS DDs out there. For some people, wiping in a veteran DLC dungeon because DDs cannot do damage or play mechanics might sound appealing. Even non-DLC normal dungeons can feel like a slog because of low DPS. For most people, that's not fun. That's also why few people are going to take the advice to "just make a tank."

But I do 100% agree that it's a community issue and not one that ZOS can realistically "fix." The only thing they could do is overhaul the group finder to have things like group recruitment listings, making it easier for people to make pre-made groups to go into content. But people who are more anti-social and don't want to communicate with others won't be making use of that feature, so... Simple fact is, there's nothing ZOS can do with the current group finder to enforce certain rules as those rules can always be worked around.

"They know that they couldn't complete it (unless they put some time and effort into their builds, but then they won't be fake anymore) and just don't go there."

The fake tank problem is a problem because of the queue for the random daily. Being random they don't get a choice whether or not they get a DLC dungeon.

"Crazy idea: Make tanking actually engaging and impactful and maybe there wouldn't be such a massive shortage of real tanks."
There isn't a shortage of tanks so much as there is a shortage of tanks willing to run with a random group. Being on a tank and getting a group with really low DPS or a group that ignores mechanics causing wipes gets frustrating really quick. Any time a tank asks in guild chat if someone wants to do a random daily they get their group almost instantly. Tanks are not forming/joining PUGs because they don't need to.

If they get killed, what about the rest of the group? When you pug, you should at least know how to play mechanics and, most important, to survive. Because you can't rely on a group due to random. When I pug for anything but vDLC I just don't care much about other players in the group. Unless they're fake dds, which is more crucial for me than fake tanking actually.

Only vet DLC dungeons require a tank. If you want to just claim a random daily - pug in normal. I really don't see fake tanks in vDLC, only fake healers, but this is mostly fine.
