I keep voicechat off and use controller to type because I don't use it often - usually to say "OK, but WHICH WB do you need help on?! 🙄

That's one of my pet hates in MMOs.

Player 1: "can anyone help me?"
Player 2: "What do you need help with?"
    P1: "boss"
    P2: "Which boss?"
    P2: "Where is it?"
    P1: "here"
P2: "I don't know where you are. What's the name of the boss or the area of the map?"
    P2: *Invites to group*
    P1: *Ignores invite*
    *silence*

30 minutes later or on a forum somewhere: "OMG this game sucks no one will ever help they all just troll and act like their better than you all the time!!!1!

TBF, they might not know the name of the boss or how to tell you where it is. Sounds crazy, I know, but if they're really new to the game then they might not know how to do even the most basic things yet, like view the map, or look directly at the boss so its name is visible-- and I do mean directly, since the name won't be visible if your angle is too high or too low.

They'll eventually learn, but until then they might need a gentle, guiding hand-- and a great deal of patience.

With guildies in a group, discord.

Out in the world - I use "say" (chat), because normally I'm commenting on something that's happening near me, like "Do you think we can take on the boss?" or something like that. Or "which outfit is that?" So I don't need the entire zone to hear it.

If I'm in a random group, like helping someone with a boss who asked in zone chat, then if I say anything, I use chat. But I rarely say anything in circumstances like that. Show up, beat the boss, bye.

Otherwise I rarely communicate. Sometimes people whisper me to ask a question. As long as they aren't creepy, I don't mind. Usually they do it for stuff I'd "say" in chat. Very occasionally I'll answer a question in zone chat if nobody else is jumping in, but it's rare.

I don't talk to anyone. You never know their religious, political or social orientation.

Xbox here too...and I use zone chat/whisper to communicate. Occasionally, I get a player messaging me via xbox live instead of in-game, usually to ask a question or compliment my character.

I have a house full of loud children, so using a mic just isn't practical.

Typing in the chat box is my preferred way. I can use voice chat if necessary.

typing in all caps in zone chat why we should have pushed DC instead of AD, or why the hammer shouldn't have run into a zerg solo.

i jest, of course. when i get a good group together, i like to type out my explanations for why we are hitting things and in the order we do them in for cyro. that way people understand plans and can better execute them in the future themselves. Suffice it to say, I prefer the in-game text system.

with friends i'll use discord, but there seems to be a disconnect. I say in guild chat that i need people for a trial but not in discord, they feel like they're unneeded even though they got the same guild chat invite.

@Bekkael so do you use a bluetooth keyboard or do you use the controller keyboard? How easy is it to chat with a keyboard or the controller?

Text or xbox party. 99% of the time group and guild chat in game is broken and has been for nearly a year. Lmao.

I prefer not to since most of the player base is toxic.

Generally I don't communicate, because I think the game is not very easy for that. In WoW I did communicate, I think in ESO, the way we don't even see directly the name and class of the players doesn't help.

If I was not a solo player, there are the guilds though. If I needed help, I would listen to the discord of the guild, best way to communicate in ESO I think.

Hi everybody, hope you're all having a great day!

I play on XBOX, and I always have my zone chat on, but my microphone off.

I was just wondering how you all mainly communicate when you're roaming the world in ESO?

I have had players say "Hello" to my via an emote (I think), only to find they have lost interest and ran off by the time I figure out how to say hello back. I think this is mainly a console issue - I'm sure PC users just use the keyboard.

I also find that the emotes now are a second step away rather than just holding the -> button which takes me longer to respond (I don't think I actually have "hello" set in a quick slot, but I have salute, which I would respond with but it doesn't show anything written above me)

I have also had players randomly jumping next to me (but I don't really know what they mean, I think it's a PvP thing normally but I'm not in a PvP area) I'm assuming they are just saying hello - to which I normally jump back.

What is your preferred method to communicate? Also if you are on Xbox what is your experience using the discord app?

Mic/Headset. You can't communicate well without one. Some encounters require a detailed explanation of mechanics and if not everyone is on the same page, its either spend 2 minutes talking to them or 10 minutes just trying to type it out, risking that they start the encounter before you finish and cause another frustration wipe.

IMO, if you are playing an MMO, you should at least have a mic handy for group play. MMO - massive multiplayer online. So you are at some point, going to run into others and maybe have to work with others (gasp!)

PC user here -- I will occasionally /w someone telling them that their outfit or overall look is cool.

Aside from that, I tend to completely avoid people lmao.

Chat box and emotes mainly. Occaisionally, when its obvious I'm with a player who doesn't speak the same language, I default to the tried and true method of greeting/thanks that is the hop on the spot.

I have a chat keyboard that attaches to my xbox controller and it's easy to use and makes text chatting faster, but I seldom use it. Most of my interactions are brief, so I just use the pop-up keyboard on screen to reply. Back when I was part of a small, very active guild, I did lots of chatting since we were running dungeons and other content together and always used a headset. That was about 4 years ago though, and all my active guilds now are huge and I don't really do anything in them beyond use the guild seller. :)
