What's your preferred way to communicate with other players in ESO?

Hi everybody, hope you're all having a great day!

I play on XBOX, and I always have my zone chat on, but my microphone off.

I was just wondering how you all mainly communicate when you're roaming the world in ESO?

I have had players say "Hello" to my via an emote (I think), only to find they have lost interest and ran off by the time I figure out how to say hello back. I think this is mainly a console issue - I'm sure PC users just use the keyboard.

I also find that the emotes now are a second step away rather than just holding the -> button which takes me longer to respond (I don't think I actually have "hello" set in a quick slot, but I have salute, which I would respond with but it doesn't show anything written above me)

I have also had players randomly jumping next to me (but I don't really know what they mean, I think it's a PvP thing normally but I'm not in a PvP area) I'm assuming they are just saying hello - to which I normally jump back.

What is your preferred method to communicate? Also if you are on Xbox what is your experience using the discord app?

Based on my playstation experience discord is probably the best way to communicate. Most guilds have a discord link where they normally set up guild events

on playstation in game I turn off zone voice chat, so use text chat or emotes. I have a bluetooth keyboard so it is easy enough to type. When grouped up for a trial or pvp I use in game voice chat.

I'm on PC so life is likely much easier as far as communication goes, mainly I use the chat box by typing.

I would add however all my guilds have very active and useful Discord servers, which we use for providing as much info about all game aspects as we can.

We use Discord voice for trials, pvp events, auctions etc it is a very useful tool. Some of our members find they need to run it on another device because they are on older PC's or laptops and it can require a bit of power, in these cases I believe many of them have it running on their phones. 😀

I have minimal conversations with other players, being a solo/cooperative player and unguilded (on PC). Typing in the chat box is fine for my needs, and I have never had the slightest interest in using any kind of voicechat in any game.

Everyone I know has one on PSN.

But communicate, in zone? Outside of crag or sometimes cyro, that stays off - so full of goofy stuff. Discord.

    Text.

I only use microphone if I am in a group with guildmates for a dungeon or trial, which is rarely these days.

I too am very slow with the emotes. The new wheel is nice but of course limited.

Ideally, I prefer to talk with other players. In Cyrodiil groups or for trials this is usually accomplished using a party (Xbox) or game chat. In the past it used to fairly regular to talk in pug dungeon groups too, but anymore most people just type in chat.

Text chat with a Bluetooth keyboard synced to my PlayStation.

If in a group together, we make a party chat because in-game voice chat is so broken and doesn't work for everyone most of the time.

I'm on PC so I just type. I have a friend who likes to chat on discord while playing but I find using the push to talk key while doing activities is disruptive, and I won't just leave my mic on.

I don't prefer Discord but have to use it anyways for guild thins and voice. Chat box for anything which does not require response in less than few minutes.

My friend who likes to discord used to throw flower petals on me every time we were together. It's not easy to have a conversation with someone who is jumping around and throwing things.

I just use text chat on console unless it's something that requires coordination then I ask if they've got a mic.

Somewhat related Playstation text chat works so much better then xbox. Xbox is just clunky as hell- weird button mapping and no memory for recently used words.

I'm on PC and I almost exclusively use text chat.

There's often a lot of noise in the room when I'm playing, and even if I wanted to I can't shut myself off from it completely so voice chat is usually not an option for me, even just listening to it. (Also I have misophonia which is severely affected by the sound of people chewing so if anyone's eating with their mic on I need to mute them or leave.) I'll occasionally use Discord for guild events, but other than that it's just text.

It sounds like there's a lot less uncertainty about it on PC because it's a safe assumption everyone has a keyboard and can use the chat box if they want to. Some people keep it turned off or set to only show guild channels, but even then there's no uncertainty, it's clear they don't want to be part of the conversation.

Once some guy was following me around Daggerfall using the flute emote every time I stopped moving, which at first I thought might be a weird way of asking for something, but he wouldn't respond when I talked to him or react to anything I did, just kept following me around with a flute until I left.

On PC, the various text chat channels and the occasional in game mail for when I need to contact someone I know who plays outside my timezone.

Have joined Discord for a few of my guilds but I use it more as a bulletin board for info my guilds are providing rather than a place to talk to guild mates.

I just don't like voice chat, I am the kinda person who sucks at chatting in real in general, I will answer a question but its rare that I start the conversation and when I do its usually a short conversation.

My preferred way to communicate with others in-game is Not.
But when I need to, I'll use PC/keyboard/chatbox.

(I've been playing computer games since ~1979, but I only just got a headset with mic in 2020, to play games with IRL friends while we couldn't meet in person.)

Note: I prefer voice chat for grouping, and use Discord when my husband and I are playing together, but I don’t group much in this game.

I use group text chat for grouping with randoms and PSN party chat for trials with my guild. On PS5 it’s really awesome that you can individually adjust the mic volume level of various players in the group. Turn up the people you can barely hear and turn all the way down that guy that leaves his TV or radio on in the background and is too distracting.

I also use basic emotes since I got used to using them in PvP for quick communication. You know, hello and thank you.

I loathe dischord and prefer the typed chat in guild chat on pc, but the guilds that use it are few and far between. So inevitably i just have to suck it up and hop on dischord because nobody wants the inbuilt in game voicechat on pc.

That's one of my pet hates in MMOs.

Player 1: "can anyone help me?"
Player 2: "What do you need help with?"
    P1: "boss"
    P2: "Which boss?"
    P2: "Where is it?"
    P1: "here"
P2: "I don't know where you are. What's the name of the boss or the area of the map?"
    P2: *Invites to group*
    P1: *Ignores invite*
    *silence*

30 minutes later or on a forum somewhere: "OMG this game sucks no one will ever help they all just troll and act like their better than you all the time!!!1!
