Downside of 20s Dots

My take:

20s Dots seem like a pretty bad idea for several reasons:
1) in Trials, bosses move or become immune or cleanse making you re-cast DOTs almost as frequently as before.
2) in Dungeons ground DOTs become almost useless as mobs do not live long enough for you to profit from a full duration.

Please create a variety of DOT with some 10s durations and some with 20 so that people can pick what they want to use pending on content and comfort level.

I think we are likely to see a splash damage and single target dot focus next patch. Where ground AOEs are dropped in favor of skills like Force Pulse and Carve, to get AOE splash effects, and then single target DOTs are used on bosses.

There are a few changes though that could be interesting. The passive resource return on orb is one of them.

Wall of elements will probably return as BiS back bar option with DW in the front. I hope there is more variety however.

I have not been on PTS (and won't) but it seems to me that 20 second AoE will not be pretty, compared to what we have today. It will be interesting to see if player testing backs that up.

increasing dot duration, while at the same time reducing dot dmg and reducing the time between ticks (most dots will tick every 2 sec instead of every 1 sec)

so dot dmg per sec is gonna be WAY down and then top it off with them hardly being useful for their full duration
    plays PC/NA

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

I think the targeted DOTs being 20 seconds is fine, but the ground DOTs should stay the way they are now.

This is a straight dps nerf that will hurt the performance of low to mid tier PvE players and result in rotations that are mostly spam. Most DoT abilities were already bad in PvP and are now even worse, unable to take advantage of nerfed HoTs.

This is going to be the spammiest meta ever. Whip spam. Veiled Strike spam. Generic burst heal spam. Spam spam.

My DOT heavy Mag DK build took a significant DPS hit with these changes. It now takes longer to kill everything even without including the LA and HA reductions. I cannot imagine how worse off DKs are going to be in Cyrodiil and Battlegrounds when they were already suffering from a lack of burst damage. Now the damage they can do in PVP is watered down even further from a time perspective. I'm guessing ZOS will call this a victory from a resource perspective as players who adhere to the new DOT rules won't struggle with resources as much. Of course that just means combat will slow way down in PVE and death will come much faster in PVP.

I wonder if some issues could be fixed by increasing the tick of dots back to 1 per second.

Yep, the first patches coming from pts are using this combo already.

I assume ZOS gonna rework the mobs movement pattern next patch , each move wait after 20 sec ?

    1) Making all dots the same duration is super boring. Homogenization kills RPGs.
    2) These changes make DOTs only usable on stationary raid bosses, they will be 99% useless anywhere else in the game because nothing will live long enough to see half the ticks.
    3) These changes kill build diversity even more. Dot builds will cease to exist.

I'm curious if Soul Splitting Trap will become more popular as it will be remaining a 10s dot.

    *Points at Assembly General*

20s DoTs are a pretty terrible idea in some situations because the boss will wipe the party because of your poorly timed poison injection.

The bigger issue to me is that this is going to make every class in PVE feel exactly the same.

They already do feel exactly the same only the dots are getting longer.

Probably why I mostly have only PVPed since 2018...

Dots should be ok over longer fights, it's short duration fights which will really suck.

Good old Pulsar spam, makes me nostalgic about ESO 1.0.

Really tempting to drop DOTs altogether.

Even at half value in PvP health recovery will be high enough on most builds to completely negate 2 dots ticking on you. Doesn't matter how long they tick, your health bar isn't going to budge.
