I have only ever heard the term "twink" used to refer to a feminine gay male in a sexual context. I had no idea it was used as a gaming term.Twink, is also referring to a specific type of character, therefore not interchangeable with toon, char, character, or avatar. A twink in gaming is keeping your character at a low level, while maxing out the available gear, thus allowing pwnage in PvP settings.

I definitely admit that there are terms only used in certain games. Like in Runescape, if you had an account on which you only trained one stat, or maxed one stat and trained others to the minimum level for certain requirements, it was a "Pure" because it purely excelled at one thing.
I type primarily with my left hand, and both char, character, av, and avatar are made up of letters on the left side of a qwerty keyboard. So for me, they are far more comfortable to type than "toon" which is primarily on the right side of the keyboard.Toon is just so much simpler and faster to type than character. I hated it for quite some time when I was first exposed to it as well, but as it was so pervasive I knew I could never beat them, and the ease of typing toon over character eventually led me to join 'em.
As i mentioned the term "Toon" has been used back to the years of Ultima online. It was also big in EQ, In WoW they used it as well but not to the same level. the ones who used it in WoW would be those from EQ era such as my self.Context of toon started in MMOs I want to say around start of WoW. It was rare, continued to grow.
It continued on through other games, like CoH, WHO, etc.. etc.. Become a norm for many folks to just call it that. Yes, it's origins can be traced back to P&P RPG.
Deal with it I guess, I've used the reference myself. Things change, I know as humans we hate change, but it happens.
