Account Wide Achievements: What's the impact?

So.....as someone who could really care less about achievements (thinking like...Steam ones), what's the impact here? What's the benefit of having achievements? What's "lost" with this update? Thanks for any answers.

Achievements unlock titles and dyes, having them account wide makes some things easier to unlock. On the flip side, since achievements were character level until now, coding for some quests (not most, but some) and flavour interactions (like NPCs calling you saviour of X after completing a zone) were triggered from achievements rather than the quest flags.

If you don't care about achievements themselves then that's the short of it. For those that care about achievements there are are knock on effects.

Getting a small dopamine rush when you accomplish an achievement on an alternate character, especially in a different role, or a class you're not as familiar with.

Being able to track what each character has done in the game, if you play them as individuals.

Immersion of players having a "Thief" title and achievement on a character who has never stolen anything.

There's 91 pages of "feedback" (I put in quotes because feedback usually means two way, which it wasn't), of all the different things players "lose" in this.
The Unshattered - Tenacious Dreamer - Hurricane Herald - Godslayer - Dawnbringer - Gryphon Heart - Tick Tock Tormenter - Immortal Redeemer - Dro-m'Athra Destroyer
The Unchained - Moth Trusted - The Just - Oathsworn - Bedlam's Disciple - Temporal Tempest - Curator's Champion - Fist of Tava - Invader's Bane - Land, Air, and Sea Supremacy - Zero Regrets - Battlespire's Best - Bastion Breaker - Ardent Bibliophile - Subterranean Smasher - Bane of Thorns - True Genius - In Defiance of Death - No Rest for the Wicked - Nature's Wrath - Undying Endurance - Relentless Raider - Depths Defier - Apex Predator - Pure Lunacy - Mountain God - Leave No Bone Unbroken - CoS/RoM/BF/FH Challenger
    69,420 achievement points

    Skyshards are a mess!

All my characters now know the same number BUT those characters that haven't actually "found" them ofc don't have the corresponding number of skill points available AND the undiscovered icons are missing for those characters now!!

It's going to be a damn nightmare trying to work this one out for me. I have several low level characters that I level in Below 50 PVP, on those characters I would just go collect a few skyshards as I needed more skill points. Now I don't understand how I'm supposed to "know" which skyshards I have collected and which I haven't.

Please somebody tell me I'm being stupid and missing something? :o

We begged ZOS to delay this update so all the bugs could be fixed. We begged ZOS to find a better way to implement this. They ignored 91 pages of feedback on PTS. We told them that individual character tracking was a mess. They ignored us.

Legitimate gameplay degradation includes map locations being auto completed, and delves and Dolmens don't give completion xp.

Your best bet is to turn off addons, as they still track the old achievement. But generally, this is just the way it is now.

No, that sounds like how it was working on the PTS. Yes, it was annoying and I remember there being discussions on the PTS threads asking ZOS to fix it before it hit live.

Whether or not this is intended is a different story. I hope it's not intentional, I feel like it would be rather silly if it was, but I don't remember us getting any communication from ZOS that gave their official stance on this.

Exactly this. I have no idea how ZOS can call AWA a QOL improvement when the QOL in game has decreased dramatically in terms of how useful the zone guide is. I mean, what was the use of implementing the zone guide if they were going to break it and make it useless now?

We tried to warn them, we really did.

    Skyshards are a mess.
Zone guide on my newer character shows all delves completed; for zones never visited.

Unlocking some of the dyes has been good.

My new character being Saviour of Nirn - something that I worked hard for - is a bit deflating.

My Saviour of Nirn character visiting The Rift to be told she has never done a dolmen in that zone.

Waiting in a delve for the boss to spawn, because the game thinks that I have done this delve before.

A number of issues. If only there was a way for these things to be tested out and to get feedback from the players. Maybe even listen to the feedback.

At the moment it is touch and go if I continue to play; coming into spring now and days are technically getting warmer and longer. Maybe time to take a summer pause and see where we are at later.

It means titles are now account-wide like the other achievement rewards and cumulative achievements like the ones for unlocking treasure chests or collecting trophies from monsters can be done across multiple characters (which means you might unlock some you didn't have before if all your characters between them meet the requirements).

There's currently a bug with the zone guide where the list down the side shows dolmens, world bosses and delves as completed even before they're discovered if another character has done it. I think that's supposed to be fixed at some point but it hasn't been yet.

And yeah, some dialogue and scenes are broken because they're tied to achievements. I don't know if ZOS is going to fix those or just ignore them. There's some things which have never been updated to accomodate One Tamriel because apparently ZOS is ok with the problems it causes. Although that's things which are more hassle than they need to be because you have to go back to your home alliance to do them, not things you can't do, so hopefully this update will be different.

There never were any improvements in performance. They said that it MIGHT lead to some improvement IN THE FUTURE. And even then, as I recall the wording, it was just about faster loading screens.

Should have made the system where it would ask you on each of your characters, if you wanted to port over achievements from selected toons you had (would be a checkbox by each toon you created) and eso would populate accordingly.

Indeed, and by ignoring us we don't mean they took no notice, we mean they refused to engage with us beyond a half-finished Q&A sheet which told us nothing. No willingness to expand on why they were doing it in this form or what they considered broken and what they considered working as intended. No conversation about it at all, zilch.

The most worrisome impact is how intrusive this change was. I have never seen them mess with character data/ progress like this before. On top of that, this isn’t optional and I doubt it would even be reversible.

Skyshards are a huge mess. All my characters are missing a lot of them, but if any single character ever picked up any one of them, it seems it won't show up for all others.

I have an add-on that shows 'completed skyshards' so I should be able to find the ones I'm missing easily enough? No. Characters that haven't gotten them won't have them show up with that either.

It's unbelievable that they would actually implement this in a game that quite heavily relies on those skyshards. I don't see any reason to start a new character unless there is a method to track which skyshards have been acquired.

Spending that amount of time running around the entire map just to discover you've got them is a pointless waster of time and effort.

If they went this route I would have expected them to grant the skyshards to all characters, not just wipe out all progress.

It is kinda(?) reversible. Only if a "catastrophic" bug occurs will the data be reversed. But knowing the problems we have now and no clear sign of intervention I assume complete data loss would be needed to count as catastrophic.....

I see the problem with granting all the skyshards is the problem of the skill points. I guess they weren't willing to apply all those unearned skill points to the char, although they were willing to grant the the unearned acheev.
