The reason they're doing a card game is due to their circumstances. They're working on fixing pvp, and in order to do that in a balanced way, they do not want to release any content that will shake up pvp too much. That's also why pvp updates to sets have been minor unless the issue is a major one. They've said that they won't do a new class or anything complicated like that until they have pvp worked out, and it should be by next year according to them.
A card game let them work on something major without having balance issues pop up in pvp. That's the main reason for that kind of mechanic: though I do hope it will be good, the mechanics they're outlined about the card game doesn't sound promising.

Yeah, I was expecting no new feature this year tbh. I would have been quite happy with new well-done zone, story, dungeons and trial with some QoL improvements and I’m glad to see new companions too. All that to say I would have been happier WITHOUT the card game added as I feel like time and resources were instead spent on something superfluous.

They are all shrug to me until a veteran overland mode is introduced.

The stories and voice acting have been decent, but just not of a quality where blazing through them are compelling enough to waltz through or have to disable CP and go naked to feel any sense of danger associated with them. Just is what it is.

I'm highly interested in the lore for this next year, but as far as the whole chapter overall, no not really. We aren't getting anything significant in regards to core gameplay (new class, new weapon etc), and I'm not really all that into card games outside of MTG, and I don't even play that anymore tbh. (I may care about it more if the transmute crystal rewards I can get are significant.)

I realize there's quite a few things they need to work on first before they can add these things, but until they do, actually playing the game is going to feel the same as it has for a while now.

Yeah the card game is like, what. Feels like yet again the finance department whiteboarded through tired tropes and landed on that for dev time.

Meanwhile their largest spend by far (new area development) the content is trivialized by companions and so forth.

Imagine doing new overland quests as a duo and feeling in danger, at any time. Or where doing them solo felt like an accomplishment.

It has been years since that was even conceivable.

I think eventually they will click to it, it is right there plain as day if they would genuinely play test through their own content.

The game doesn’t need to be near as hard as a souls game, but if all there was was an easy mode on those games the plot wouldn’t hold people’s attention and we’d never have heard of them. Clearly ESO is a different game with a wealth of content, but the tried and true catharsis of earning your way through a plot enhances its perceived value.

But when a card game gets countless hours of dev time and that seemingly gets skimmed over you certainly form a few opinions on how the shop is being led :)

That's especially unfortunate for a chapter that isn't just a nostalgia ride as last two were (love Oblivion but still, eh). Seems like they've got an idea what writing people might like more and setting along the way but lack of substance might be a nail to the coffin here.

Personally I just hope my raiding team we're semi-reuniting with soon won't be much interested in a new trial so I can skip buying it for some time. Hate companions ("can't wait" to levels another useless bunch) and card game as a main feature doesn't cut it in a slightest.

Seeing their showcase they easily were able to lure people in with some kind of pvp jousting, spear skill line or something in the lines. Unfortunate year and missed opportunities.

Elsweyr was ok but I'm not into that style, the Deadlands weren't of interest to me because I'm not into Daedra stuff.

Here, as i know next to nothing about the actual content and story, I am looking forward to the "medieval" feel of things at least, hopefully lots of castles and forts, jousting rings, plate armor and the like, and hopefully styles, motifs, and furnishings to fit and NOT all coral encrusted sea based items

There's a thread for that feedback. They'll shut this down if you derail the discussion into another overland debate.

I think there are a lot of people who are disappointed with this chapter because other than some new armor sets, new playable areas, and the card game, it's not really bringing anything new that gets people really excited - a new class, no new skill line, no major ability reworks (just balance changes to scaling). I'm a little bit in the same boat, but on second glance, I think perhaps we're just spoiled and we're expecting too much. As someone who loves the stories told in ESO, I'm excited to get a new story line - just not excited as I would be given that I''m not quite caught up with the old stuff.

I think if your PVP oriented, or endgame oriented and you play the game less for the story, then this chapter obviously doesn't offer up a whole lot to you. What we know from the new sets, they appear to be pretty mediocre.

If the chapter came this way, and there was a laundry list of bugs, fixes, and performance issues they were going to try to address with this dlc, I think people would be happy with just that, but it doesn't even appear that they're doing that. So I can understand why a lot of people are disappointed.

It's all so predictable. And I have to stress, imo the year long story is directly responsible for the drop in writing quality.

Pffff talk for yourself, the chapter is about Bretons and the upcoming combat changes look super good to me.
    So I'm super excited. :D

People on forums always claim the 'majority' agrees with them wholeheartedly to make their own words sound more convincing, but that's just silly. I mean, in contrast most people I know are super excited about the Breton year, but that doesn't mean I'll claim that everyone amongst the playerbase shares my opinion.

Honestly I don't care about new skills or classes, I just want a really engrossing story, lots of places to explore and discover, and content that's a bit of a challenge.

And I hope there's a proper scavenger hunt.

I refuse to prejudge and pan the upcoming chapter in general, and the card game in particular, until I've had the opportunity to play them in depth. I preordered the new chapter shortly after the reveal-- the day after, I think it was-- and I'm looking forward to exploring the new zones after the chapter is released.

As for the card game, I've never played a collectible card game-- with the exception of TES:Legends, which I'm not very good at-- so I'm ambivalent about the idea of having a card game inside of ESO. As much as I want to see Legends stay alive so I can try to get better at it, I was against the idea of incorporating Legends into ESO due to their different time periods; adding just the cards might have been okay for the most part, but Legends' storyline takes place in ESO's distant future. So unlike all of the players who are disappointed because they wanted Legends to be added into ESO, I for one am very relieved that it was not-- although we've yet to see how much the new card game will resemble Legends, if at all. And from the reveal, it sounds as though the new card game is going to tie into the existing zones and be a method of acquiring new gear, new furnishings, new collectibles such as mounts and pets, etc., similar to how Antiquities was made into an important feature for acquiring those sorts of things in all zones of the game. (Certain zones might not contain dig sites, but they still contain leads to dig sites.)

In my opinion, it's already shaping up to be a very interesting chapter, judging by how much debate it's already generating.

I am someone who's into the lore and especially lore about lost races and mysteries.
Greymoor was mediocre and it did have some issues but the antiquities system made up for that!

Heck we even got Snow elf stuff.
It was awesome. Blackwood disappointed me as once again, there was no mention of the Lilmothiit at all and I would have loved to see them explored, but I really liked the characters and Lyranth is one of my favorites plus we got a more nuanced experience of the Deadlands.

In other words... High Isle is the first time that my hype has been close to 0.
I might be surprised and High Isle was populated by something cool in the past, but as it is now... It just feel like generic human isle with naughty politics.

I was honestly hoping the chapter would have been Pyandonea as some people theorized, I'd be over the moon about that.
I personally don't care too much if there's no major new skill as long as you give me an interesting location with lore I care about. They might surprise me but from what I've seen so far, I remain unconvinced.

I don't really care about new features personally (and tbvh I think ESO is already feature-rich, especially if you compare it with the TES games that came before). It was the idea of Summerset that drew me to ESO and now that I'm here, all I really want from a new chapter are a beautiful land, beautiful music, interesting stories and compelling characters.

As for the new feature, the card game, I have less than zero interest in it, and as long as they make it completely optional, I'll be happy.

I pretty much agree with your first paragraph, other than the Morrowind chapter being what finally drew me to ESO-- although it wasn't Morrowind per se, but the idea of being able to explore all (or most) of Tamriel; Morrowind just happened to be the chapter they'd released shortly before I decided to reconsider playing ESO (after initially taking a hard pass a few years earlier because I was so adamantly opposed to the idea of buying a game but then having to pay a subscription to play it).

As for your second paragraph, my interest in the card game is greater than zero, but not particularly keen since I'm not a big fan of collectible card games like a lot of people are. But as for whether it will be "completely optional," everything in the game is pretty much completely optional, so of course it will be-- unless you're a big fan of min/maxing and chasing BIS/METAs, in which case I suspect it will be considered essential for acquiring the absolute best gear (something I personally don't care much about; I haven't even completed a single mythic item yet).

Two-shotting every thing with light attacks is just too depressing to bare at this point. Nothing they put out is going to excite me until they find a way to fix the Overland experience. I stopped questing, permanently, a few quests into Blackwood's main story. So, from now on, it's mostly other games, housing, companions... and... continued... waiting for something to finally change.

I love the breton content that’s not my complaint my complaint is that there is no new gameplay feature that adds a new feel to gameplay. And also my “claim to the majority” is what was shared in the official thread made from Zos when asked how excited are people. Way more people voted disappointed and very little voted excited in fact I’m pretty sure it was around 20% out of the many hundreds of people who voted that actually said they were excited. I’m glad you’re excited and I am excited for the new zone but I just feel like the gameplay needs something new to spice up the chapter

I think there’s plenty to be excited for, maybe it’ll be more entertaining than you expect. I got tired of combat years ago to be honest. Even new systems won't make it thrilling or reworking, except maybe a toggle skill that changes light attacks into aoe cones or when applicable, a traveling damage source like the Flame Blossom set but faster and non piercing. Tab target and LA weave is just so bland in my opinion.

But I'm surely in the minority since I pre-ordered for the Card game. I literally cannot wait for it. People seem to forget antiquities is basically became a combat system. So many hardcore combat players can't live without Ring of the Pale Order or Harpooner's Wading Kilt these days.

Eh, I've been tired of combat since I played my first CRPG (in 1985....) Seriously, I am actually excited for this chapter BECAUSE it's stated to be based on diplomacy.... and I certainly hope it really turns out that way. I abhor combat as a way to "advance". That's not how I really want to spend my time in a game. I want to solve problems, manipulate factions, coerce rulers, implement diplomatic gotchas....

Yeah yeah.... I'm aware I'm a minority of one. *sigh*

I think the amount of excitement one gets from chapters is based on their expectations. For example for me Elsweyr was exciting and no other chapter excited me that way. Every chapter brings something new to the game, yes but after a while they always feel like normal. For example antiquities it just become normal these days and lost its first excitement. I believe every chapter will be like this.

Perfect! Know that every new chapter is going to be terrible and lower your expectations. I think the GOT writers want to hire you.

I love this game and I love the stories and chapters they release but his next chapter doesn’t have me as excited as last usual. The reason why I’m not excited has nothing to do with the setting or Bretons because I am actually stoked for that and I love the medieval castles, knights, chivalry and all of that sort. The problem is the new feature just doesn’t bring any excitement in my opinion. I feel like the card game may be cool or whatever but as a main feature it is really upsetting in my opinion I waited a year after Blackwood announcement thinking we were guaranteed a new gameplay feature with combat because it’s been so long but here we are again and now I feel we will have to wait a whole another year or more if they don’t add one next years chapter. It’s just sad because I usually like to start a new character that fits the theme of the chapter and uses the new class or skills but there isn’t one so I feel like it’s going to get dull especially since I’ve played all classes. I was hoping since we got a breton dlc with would get a new magic weapon or a new class but I was disappointed. I hope they can see majority of us are unhappy no new skills or weapons were added and hopefully they add something in q4 dlc or something because this is disappointing in my opinion

I mean the problem is people continue to buy the dlc so why would they ever do more?

Compared to what ff14 offers each expansion is crazy. In eso you get 1 new map....... Maybe sometimes 1 new class...... But in ff14 you get 6 full huge zones 2 new playable classes, 8 dungeons, 2 trials, 4 normal raids 4 Savage raids...... They are the same price seriously just take that in lol.

They have not added anything really game changing that gets the majority of people excited in years. Necro class was the last major thing. For expansions, it should always be something major. And no, I do not count companions as major. Antiquities is also not major.

I can forgive some lack of innovativeness that took place during the pandemic. But I sure hope next year they come up with something better than card games, mini games and NPC followers.

As far as the quest storylines go, let's be honest, they're not one of ZOS's strengths.

Much how singleplayer games with weak writing rely on scripted sequences to progress the story, ZOS relies far too heavily on the "Talk to..." quest objective. [snip]
