The one shot mechanic system has to go

  • Skykaiser_Ọlọrun
The occasional one-shot mechanic is fine, but ESO leans on it especially hard. It's one of my biggest complaints with MMOs these days, really. Like they all only know one way to make a boss fight hard. But when boss fights are static, unchanging encounters, I suppose the only way to make it, "challenging" is to throw out one-shots/party-wipes left and right.

Are you referring to wipe mechanics where the boss has an unavoidable ability that deals more damage than what you have health thus killling you instantly. [snip] That's not hard mode that's just a bad mode. Hard is having bosses that are hard to kill because they only take certain types of damage or require you to do something before they will take damage, or heal themselves. Bosses that have one shot abilities should provide a clue that its coming so you can either block or stand in a safe zone. One shot mechanics without having survivability mechanics is a flawed game design. People don't rage because a boss is tough to kill, they rage because they die often because of unrealistic damage abilities without a mechanic to avoid such damage.

The one-shot mechanics in non-veteran/raid content are far too common and they don't really belong. Add a bit of poor server performance and it can become completely unreasonable. (Like right now being killed by laggy dragons with 35,000 strikes and visual red-zones 10m from the actual strike spot.)

You can't make most content this easy and then slap some one-shot kills on the game and call it a day. That is not elegant. Hitting level 45 and suddenly getting dumped in White Gold Tower of One shot kills is like getting pushed out the window. It doesn't feel good or make the world feel dangerous. It is just irritating.

    Nope

If you are not veteran - go normals. No one shot on normals.

As i do not go normals, because i am veteran.

NOPE!!! Not sure I can say it much better, but I will rant anyway.

One shots and invulnerable phases are about the only way to force mechanics on the player. Invulnerable phases are just frustrating IMO, I much prefer the possibility of a one shot.

Virtually every one shot mechanic in this game boils down to Don't Stand in Stupid or Interrupt the guy channeling. All of them are confined to Vet Content, which nobody needs to turn on.

We are already at the point where Vet content has been dumbed down for the masses. The two new Vet Dungeons, even on hard mode are joke. Vet Vateshran was equally and laughably easy on release. The difficulty of new vet content needs turned up, not the other way around. Nothing requires anyone to do vet, so no reason it shouldn't be a challenge.

Anyone remember VMA or VMOL at release? That is where we need to get back to IMO. Real difficulty, real progression.

Reread that. If you have to force any sort of mechanics on a player, you are not allowing them to play they game the way they want to, but the way YOU want to

If this is the attitude of the devs in a open world MMO, specifically an Elder Scrolls game, they are missing the entire point of why people play games

If you find a couple of sets and skills that allow you to mitigate and survive heavy hits, GOOD FOR THEM!

If the devs wants to cater to the loudest minority concerning difficulty, putting one shot mechanics in that affect everyone, even those that play solo, is a bad business decision

The MMO world is about to get more competitive, and catering to those that make a living streaming a game is not the way to entice new players

Lose the one shot mechanics and be more creative on their enemy AI

Dont punish players for exploring the opportunities of the game and then utilizing them

I think one shots should exist, but they do over-use them IMO.

    i agree with this

there are plenty of 1 shots on normal, but those mechanics are the same ones that 1 shot on vet too

the ring in vateshran will 1 shot on normal, but its much easier to kill the enemy on the ring (even easier if you have a skill to bypass it entirely)

dungeons which have mechanic that you cant break out of yourself i consider 1 shots (even though some dont directly cause dmg like the boss that webs you in crypt of hearts 2, you just cant do anything so you are going to end up dying eventually)

and stuff like the ghost walls in fang lair are still 1 shots on normal too

as others noted the "probable" 1 shots are stuff like heavy attacks from "elite" enemies in dungeons (falkreath hold wallbreaker minotaurs heavy attacks can 1 shot on normal if you dont have enough health, but guarenteed 1 shots on vet if you are tank who doesnt block)
    plays PC/NA
    handle @Necrotech_Master
    active player since april 2014

i have my main house (grand topal hideaway) listed in the housing tours, it has multiple target dummies, scribing altar, and grandmaster stations (in progress being filled out), as well as almost every antiquity furnishing on display to preview them

feel free to stop by and use the facilities

The one shot mechanic is plague in MMO coming from a veteran that has been playing older games and did participated in raids, trials, etc whatever you wish to call it is utterly RNG - Random generated cheap implementation that subsequently causes nothing more but a frustration and absurdness, needless truly.

I played through Vateshran hollows today which is I must admit quite tough for something that is supposed to be solo Arena, however for anything else being hit by millions of damage and shot that no build can take that no skill is relevant or healer nor tank is just ludicrous or having no option at all. These details do matter, Regardless if one is casual,PVP oriented,Hardcore dungeon clearer, it does not matter of one's playsystle. One hit is the worst of the worst that is on going process since basically dawn of MMO's.

I also understand the motive, maybe so players are more cautions and "forced" to work together but there is clear difference between punched hard and complex way to beat a boss than being hit by unavoidable Area of Effect, direct hit or some lazy way that players have no chance to defened, its much more worse combined with performance issues.

I therefore vote for one shot system to be eradicated entirely from Elder Scrolls Online

    Sincerely
    Limbstarie

    Partially agree.
If to say about oneshot mechanics that doesn't show u right signs to come.
Like dumb dragons in both Elsweyrs... Broken body boxes of huge monsters in addition with huge area with very hard to be recognized type and value of aoe damage, strikes, which come into one direction but anyway hitting u in another.
Almost invisible dots\status effects. Not working proper interactable things while u get a huge amount of damage. Huge hits which come before boss done animations for them.

And can't agree in a part where oneshot is a punishment of ignoring mechanics. When there is a set of rule, and u or your group should do an amount of consequent actions...sure there should be one shots, huge damage, increase of difficulty.
In another way such activity will be empty.
But, not as in many dungeons where u are locked in very boring and long consequence of mechanics, with too huge max health of boss, so u should repeat and repeat same *** while your eyes start bleeding until its done.

Mechanics are important to make this game fun and give a feeling of mastery over it's content. Mechanics are what make bosses uniques and make theses encounters challenging and feel like puzzles you have to solve. Punishing mechanics are what make you learn them and actually engage with the boss and get better at playing. Removing those mechanics would just turn the game into a mindless skill spam.

    Greetings,

We have closed this topic as it was originally created in March 2021. In many cases, it's better to create a new thread on a topic that you want to discuss as opposed to bumping one that is rather old.
