Companions, Controllers and the 'A' button

I hope this changes in 2022. Please fix that action button and the companion chat button
I was trying to jump (A button) and ended up having a chat with Bastion
I was trying to pick up loot (A button) and Mirri and I had a chat.
(rinse repeat many times)

so I have quick slotted my companions, switch them off after battle to jump, pick stuff up, pick a lock or anything else...

Question:

Does anyone interact with their Companion a lot? Switch gear, skills?

Am I missing something? Maybe this button is properly placed?

Tanks,

Z

Have you tried Template B, it moves the jump button elsewhere so it's not connected to your interact button. Other than that, they toned down priorities interaction ranges because it interfered with quest objects and some containers so getting the companions to talk frequency went up again.

On PC the general interact is E and that's the key you use to interact with companions too. They also get in the way and want to chat when you are busy.

Jump is different though. We use Space for that.

Hey, it's X button not A! What the......

"Am I missing something? Maybe this button is properly placed?"

You are not missing anything, ZOS just did not test enough on consoles. Really all they need to do is give us 2 options in settings to fix these annoyances.

1 - Toggle on/off interacting with companions. This should not work for the original game companions tho (quest companions). Otherwise that would get annoying fast.

2 - Toggle on/off interacting with fishing spots. Seriously these can be hard to see and can get in the way of jumping at times too. Especially when falling into water accidently and trying to jump back out.

    Problems solved.

It's the same problem with temporary companions from certain quests, and on PC. Every time I try to read something, open a container, go through a door or whatever the game decides actually I want to talk to them to get the same 1-line reminder of the quest objective I had 30 seconds ago when I was also trying to do something else.

I'm not sure if you can change it even on PC. I know we have more freedom to rebind controls than console players (no idea why they can't give everyone that option, but anyway) but as far as I remember talking to companions isn't a separate action from other interactions, so there's no way to bind it to a different key.

I think the problem with this is the cursor priority. I have played around with it a bit and found that there is an extraordinarily large area of your screen (as in my cursor can be pointing completely away from my companion) where the default action is set to interaction with the companion. At times, the only way to get it to shift from a default action of speaking to the companion is to shift to first person and be facing away from my companion.

It’d be good to have the option of asking your companion to keep back at a distance, like what the Dark Brotherhood followers do in Skyrim.

Ironically, Bastian likes to say, “I will be just a step behind.” Which implies he will keep a distance yet guess what happens when Sammy taps E (PC key for interact) with treasure chest/node/loot? This one ends up with an unwanted interaction with the redhead.

And yet he can be too far away when you need him lol. My example is right now I am levelling up his melee weapons and I kill the enemies before he lands a blow because of how far away he is behind me or how slow he walks.

    *Sigh* it's a catch 22......

I am so used to where the jump button is..
or do you mean it separates the Companion button from Jump?

    Tanks for posting!

There's so much more that could be done with the sheathe weapons button.
Why do we manually have the ability to draw and sheathe weapons other than for an aesthetic purpose?
If your weapons are sheathed, and you tap X, you'll draw your weapons and cast a skill, and if you have your weapons drawn, when you talk to an NPC you'll automatically sheathe them.

Wouldn't it be better to have a passive/aggressive mode where your sheathed weapons open your other buttons for interactions, and when you draw, your other buttons are for skills?

Thankfully us PC users have an addon to help with that; I feel sorry for console users that don't have that luxury.
