New life event and the cost of crafting

    Hi,

Just thought I'd let management know that the cost of crafting materials is not worth the effort of doing the new life 'deep winter' charity.
I don't know how newer players are going to get around this without some frustrations.

Some of the quests require (12 craftable objects)....is this an event or a push to spend our gold?

I gave up on them as well. Didn't feel like using up my crafting materials just to keep getting styles I already had.

After a short while I stopped doing the blue writs. Cheaper to just buy Skaal pages from traders than to burn 24 heartwood per writ.

    New player here.

I started playing ESO 40 days ago. I am not in a guild, therefore I have no access to trading; which means I make gold very slowly.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to buy Old Mistveil Mansion in Riften with crowns - because I like the idea of my character having a house instead of staying in an Inn room. Why I mention the house is explained below.

The first day the Festival started I was given a writ to craft some reinforced crates -12 to be exact- which took away 50+ heartwood. Since that day three things happened:

    a) My intense course in harvesting -I'm talking about hours of harvesting- have produced just 2 heartwood,
    b) My home is still empty with just a couple of tables, 3 chairs and a bed, and
    c) The Festival in question is over for me - and any future events for that matter.

"Some frustrations" doesn't begin to describe how I feel, I'm pulling my hair; but I can only blame myself for not throwing that writ away without a second thought. So, lesson learnt: Festivals and events are not for all. It's skins and shinnies for some, a huge sink of gold and materials for others. I'm not buying the hype ever again.

I agree. I started doing a few, but with the price of the skins selling for 5 to 10k on the guild traders, it's not worth the cost or the waste of my own stock of furniture mats.
I think the cost of crafting any white furniture item should be reduced to using one material instead of three or more each. I mean seriously crafting twelve rough whatever costs 36 pieces of heartwood. Thats a lot when I see it going for around 40k for 40 of them and your return ends ups being 1/8 to 1/4 of what you spent to craft it.
I think zeni needs to go back and rework crafting. Items take way to many resources.

what really irritates me is the writs LIE and do not TELL you that; they are all "craft an item" singular
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

This has been a complaint with the Deep Winter writs since they were introduced a couple of years ago, and it's the reason the things get instantly destroyed by me now.

If only they gave us a Vendor to whom we could trade ANY tier of logs to for the Heartwood.

Don't go and say "but that will kill the economy or value of them!"

The only reason (in my mind) we even have Heartwood/Bast and all the other types is because it would have been a hassle for them to make furnishing recipes require each and every individual log/tier type etc.

So these "special" types of "wood"/"cloth" etc were made for ease of the crafting system in general. No one said they were ever intended to be rare.

    Summary:

Give us a Vendor already ZOS that lets us trade any type of wood for Heartwood, and ditto for the other Craft Skills as well. Obviously not on a ratio of 1 to 1. Something fair. :)

You get the skin and then dump them in the guild bank for people that don't have it yet. It's not like there aren't other writs that arn't worth the cost - jewelry anyone?

Except most people aren't going to throw away dozens of mats for something they either can't use, can't sell, or don't want. If people want to do it fine, but you make it sound like that's what people are obligated to do.

Let's also not use the horrible cost versus return of JC Master Writs to justify Deep Winter Charity ones costing as much as they do to complete, for the Woodworking ones at least. Just because something cruddy exists doesn't mean it should be a free pass for other cruddy things to exist. It's that mentality that makes.people think they can get away with continued cruddy stuff rather than things actually being improved.
    Character List [RP and PvE]:

Niralae Elsinal: Altmer Stamsorc DPS - Young Altmer with way too much Magicka
Sarah Lacroix: Breton Magsorc DPS - Fledgling Vampire who drinks too much water
Slondor: Nord Tankblade - TESified verson of Slenderman
Marius Vastino: Imperial <insert role here> - Sarah's apathetic sire who likes to monologue
Delthor Rellenar: Dunmer Magknight DPS - Sarah's ex who's a certified psychopath
Lirawyn Calatare: Altmer Magplar Healer - Traveling performer and bard who's 101% vanilla bean

You can do them anytime, wait til the prices drop then do them.People know there's always someone wanting instant gratification,so they raise prices during events.Like someone said, the style pages are worth almost nothing now,so best to get em in traders. They really need a new passive to craft multiple items like provisioning/alchemy does.

It's ridiculous that ZOS decided to do away with the regular New Life writ drops. they required minimal materials for furniture and were the original writs. Sure you didn't get any extra style pages with them- but for folks that just wanted to unlock the skin, they were perfect.

They continue to make questionable decisions with these events, doing away with the classic favorites in favor of supposed 'streamlining' the reward drops.... remember last year when the geniuses let someone who obviously didn't play the game and knew NOTHING about the Witchmother Festival do the 'trimming' and suddenly you were locked behind a ticket paywall for the original Motif set... which is REQ for the Holiday Achievements? lol This is just another round of stellar decision making by people not actually playing the game.

The only thing I keep running out of is nickel, so I have to buy it from the craft merchants. It is 15 gold each.

I don't think I did. If you don't want the skin, then don't do it. I wasn't that fussed but only have like 2, it wasn't alot of stuff, so though why not. YMMV....

Yes they can be done at any time but another issue is the writs don't stack so they take up inventory space which itself is a constrained item, especially for newer players.

For me nickel is the more constrained material as it is needed for many of the event related writs not just the woodworking ones. I have stopped doing Deep Winter writs as I long ago got the styles I consider important in the Skaal line and I am limiting the Imperial writs to food only since they use materials that are easily obtained during my normal game playing.

For those who don’t know, you can buy nickel from any carpenter, woodworker, or blacksmith NPCs merchant in the game for just 15g each.
