I was leveling them both up. Then my character accidently picked up a red potion instead of activating a merchant and Bastion yelled at her. She instantly and permanently fired him. No such problems with Mirri. I confess I use the No Interact addon and have both torchbugs and butterflies disabled from any interaction. At first I thought I preferred Bastion's good nature and that Mirri might be another annoying Naryu but I've been pleasantly surprised what a kind and true friend Mirri is.

Companion quirks about what upset them should absolutely not involve things you can accidently do like steal something when trying to turn in 7 writs, or grab a butterfly/torchbug when reaching for some nightshade, or killing a bunny when aiming for a baddie. . . . If such nuisances are necessary, they really should be very conscious, active choices - like killing someone with the blade of woe (just an example).

They call it "personalities". IMHO they could write their "personalities" much better and if they can't, they should give us possibility to switch their "personalities" off.
Probably they overestimated abilitiy of DEV team to create at least modest AI OR they didn't bothered to test them for some 20 hours in game.
Because what feels good for the first 5 minutes starts to be annoying when repeated thousands times.

As fo as AI part out of combat, they are both hopelessly bad.

I use them when solo farming dungeon sets. The longer i play the more i want them to [snip]. Bastian can be really a [snip] in my language. Miri coments are sorta better, but Bas-tank many times more comfortable for playing.

Gun to my head would make mirri the choice cause dunmer, you know, superior race and all of that.

    Ahem.

But it's just annoying feature to me, reminder of a empty feature-wise chapter and useless for a lot of players. Still you gotta level that annoyance to get those achievement points to be done with the dlc. Some people I know use it for profit reasons obviously by selling juicy gear to actually interested players but that's about it.

Bastian is a stronger dps, tank, and healer than Mirri.

90% of Mirri's class skills are completely garbage

Exactly. Bastian helps quite a bit with all but the strongest bosses. He rarely dies and he adds to my overall DPS. I don't care one bit about the personality of what amounts to an NPC follower with fighting skills, but do want the follower to be a benefit to me. I set his dialog to the lowest setting. He doesn't say much now and I ignore him when he speaks.

    Bastion, because of this:

"With these companions, they have their own likes and dislikes," Lambert says. "You can go up one side and down the other side with your relationship to them. There is going to be something special that unlocks when you max out that relationship spectrum as well, though initially, romance won't be a part of it."

He adds, "Down the line, though, romance is definitely somewhere we want to get to. We just want to make sure when we add it that we do it right."

It's not really that I'm a lone wolf, but I have no idea what these companions are for. I've unlocked Bastian on my male templar, and Mirri on my DK, and they now have houseguest status. Other than that, why why why do we have companions.

They're not supposed to replace real players.

Yet, "Lambert says the idea behind Companions is to allow solo players and small groups to take on dungeons without worrying about becoming overwhelmed." I watched the video of the stream, and that is a quote from one of the articles about it, and it's pretty much what he said. So you don't have to deal with people, who are scary.

    Huh???

Which is it? Until someone makes a firm decision, they're going to continue to be pretty much a non-thing.

As a character, Miri is more entertaining in general. Bastion is kind of adorable but a little too much of a "good boy", and that affects gameplay with stealing, or accidentally killing critters. However, since they're adding romance I've got to give Bastion a chance lol. Hopefully they will ease up on his super strict good boy mentality a bit, or they will make another companion that's a good guy but not that rigid.

As for their personalities, I like them both; Bastian can be a little cheesy and Mirri a little long-suffering, but they are both really nice overall. In terms of gameplay, I tend to summon Bastian more, since he's specced as a tank/off-heals, and I usually play on a DD character, so it helps not having aggro, you can flank the boss, etc.

Mirri primarily because whilst the minor irritiation thing for both is poorly designed the Bastian one with cheese is just a pain, whilst Mirri is only a problem due to the bug whereby she gets cross when you select a torchbug by accident even if you don't collect it. Thankfully there's an addon for that - another add on that shouldn't need to exist however.

Also because she is ok with me stealing things.

None of the above, they did a very poor job of creating truly appealing, interesting companions, probably on purpose to sell crown store companions or more likely personalities/polymorphs later. Nothing wrong with that, but they could have done such a better job on the initial companions.

Several of the skills were obviously overnerfed before release, the final fighter's guild skill for instance, it was very obviously something much better that was nerfed into uselessness. I have a strong hunch companion DPS was also toned way down at some point from what it was designed to be.

The companion addition to the game has allowed me to do a couple more things solo that were tougher before, but otherwise it's a yawn. Compared to things like jewelry/psijic, necro/warden classes, antiquities/mythics, Blackwood's special sauce as an expansion is severely lacking and will consider very carefully before paying $$ for the next expansion if they are going to be that mediocre.

To be honest I'm a bit sick of both of them now.

But at first I much preferred Bastian. I liked his positivity and it was what I needed at the time. (It's been a bad year.) Mirri's sarcasm got on my nerves. But as we got closer and I did her personal quests, I liked her more.

I guess they're about even for me now. It is annoying that I can't loot thieves' troves with Bastian as it's one of my favorite pastimes. But sometimes I will summon him if I feel I need a boost, like with a world boss. (I made him a healer.)

I do wish their mounts would stop trying to mount my mount when we stop riding. Space please!

A firm decision on whether they're supposed to replace real players or not. If the idea is they can help solo players or small groups in dungeons, that's replacing a player. And if they're replacing a player, they need real skills and not pale imitations. If they're replacing a player, they need proper gear, not weird traits that don't seem to offer much. If they're replacing a player, they need better AI in a fight. If they're not replacing a player, then watered-down skills, stupid gear and resetting bosses with inadequate AI is fine, but it's not going to be much help to a solo player wanting some help with a dungeon.

They aren't replacing a real player. They're help. That's it.

Some people find them useful. Some people like a more interactive "pet" that they can dress up. Other's can't be fussed.

It isn't any more complicated than that.

When it matters I pick Bastion because I have him equipped as a melee tank and equipped with the skill Searing Weapons which buffs my light and heavy attacks. Because he is equipped as melee, he is not likely to pull a boss out of my aoe or pull the boss out to reset the fight. I've not tried equipping Mirri as melee yet.

If it doesn't matter, I pick whichever companion that I am trying to level. Either one is okay with me most of the time.

Searing Weapons: Companion charges their weapons and their allies' weapons with volcanic power, increasing their damage done with Light and Heavy Attacks by 15% for 8 seconds.
